🇲🇱🇧🇫🇳🇪 Three West African countries, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, all led by military regimes, have signed the 'Liptako-Gourma Charter' to establish the 'Sahel States Alliance' (SSA). This alliance aims to create a collective defense and mutual assistance framework in case of aggression.

It also includes economic efforts to combat terrorism in the Liptako-Gourma region, bordering these three nations. Despite pressure from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to restore constitutional order in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso view any armed intervention as illegal aggression and promise an immediate response.

This alliance involves international actors like France, Germany, and the United States, who have suspended their aid to Niger. Its goal is to enhance security in a region heavily impacted by jihadist activity.

Nationwide blackout as Nigeria’s electricity grid collapses again

Nigeria has again been thrown into darkness after the national grid system, operated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) from Osogbo in Osun State collapsed.

A check by in the early hour of today showed that the grid plummeted to a meagre 273 megawatts of electricity coming from two out of the over 27 electricity generation.

This comes barely a week after TCN, rolled out the drum to celebrate a questionable 400 days of grid stability.

A number of Distribution Companies confirmed to The Guardian that the grid went down at 00:41 AM, disclosing that most of their feeders are out.

As of 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, five generating plants were on the grid. Afam VI had 0.70MW, Dadinkowa was generating 0.00MW, Ibom Power had 32.90MW, Jebba had 240MW and Olorunsogo was on the grid with zero generation.

At about 1AM midnight, the total power on the grid was 35MW, indicating that the country experienced a total collapse.

The grid went to 193MW at about 3AM before climbing to 273MW when this report was filed.

The TCN has not responded to inquiries by our correspondent about the development.

Abure not sacked, Apapa’s camp twisted Appeal Court judgement – LP

The Labour Party (LP) has dismissed claims that its party leadership, led by Julius Abure, has been sacked by the Appeal Court.

Instead, the LP said it was another devastating blow for the Lamidi Apapa-led faction as the Court of Appeal in Owerri dismissed the appeal filed by one Mr Basil Maduka, who it said is contending for the Labour Party governorship candidacy for Imo State.

The LP, therefore, called on members, supporters and the general public to distance themselves from what it described as “falling and compromised members of the party”, who it said have since been shoved out of the party.

The party in a statement issued on Thursday by the LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, claimed that Apapa’s camp had misinformed the public by twisting the judgement of the appellate court.

reported that there was confusion as the Court of Appeal in Owerri on Thursday reportedly sacked Julius Abure as Labour Party National Chairman.

It was also alleged that the court, in the same judgement, recognised Lamidi Apapa as the National Chairman of the party.

According to the statement, the court held that the appeal was not necessary as the decision of the trial court was in its favour and that mere comments of the trial judge in the matter was not a judgement and, therefore, should be discountenanced.

Ifoh explained that the Labour Party had asked the Court of Appeal to quash the comments of the trial court in the Federal High Court in Owerri and also told the court that Senator Athan Achonu won the party’s primaries.

He further added that “It is, therefore, important to state that neither the Federal High Court Owerri nor the Court of Appeal Owerri, which sat in Abuja today, made any orders in the matter other than for lack of locus standi against the plaintiff (Basil Maduka).”

The party insisted that “the status quo remains with Senator Athan Achonu as the validly nominated candidate of Labour Party for the 2023 Imo governorship election”.

Tribunal removes Labour Party Rep in Lagos, declares APC winner

The National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Lagos has nullified the election of the member representing Ojo Federal Constituency, Seyi Sowunmi of the Labour Party.

On Thursday, the court declared former Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Honourable Lanre Ogunyemi as the winner of the constituency.

Ogunyemi had challenged the declaration of his Labour Party opponent as winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Delivering the judgement, the three-man panel agreed with the petitioner that the candidate of the Labour Party was not qualified to contest the elections.

It therefore declared Ogunyemi as the winner.

Members of the panel were Justice Ashu A. Ewah, Chairman; Justice Abdullahi A Ozegya; and Justice M A Sambo.

This is yet another blow on Labour Party, which won 38 House of Reps seats in the 2023 elections.

Last month, the Delta State National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Asaba, sacked Ngozi Okolie, lawmaker representing Aniocha/Oshimili Constituency in the lower legislative chamber of the National Assembly.

The tribunal nullified the election of Okolie and declared candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ndudi Elumelu, winner of the February 25 National Assembly election.

In a 107-page judgment that lasted over five hours, the three-member tribunal, headed by Justice A.Z. M***a, declared that the LP candidate was wrongfully declared the winner by INEC.

Naira crumbles to 920/$, fuel marketers push for fresh price hike

Oil marketers, on Thursday, insisted on a possible hike in the pump price of petrol, following a further plunge in the value of the naira against the United States dollar

Oil dealers and marketers said on Thursday that with the exchange rate at N920/$, the pump price of petrol could not remain at N617/litre, particularly if the current exchange rate lingered.

The oil marketers, however, pointed out that since the Federal Government had insisted that it would not increase the petrol price, it must then be “subsidising the commodity secretly, based on the prevalent exchange rate reality.”

It was gathered that the ex-depot price of petrol was around N585/litre on Thursday. The projected cost of N680/litre, going by the current forex rate, means that the government might be forced to spend about N95/litre as subsidy.

Last week, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority stated that petrol consumption in Nigeria was about 52 million litres daily.

When this is multiplied by the estimated N95/litre projected subsidy and calculated for a month, it implies that the government could be forced to spend about N153bn as fuel subsidy monthly.

“I still maintain that since we are still importing petroleum products into this country, it has to do with forex. And once it has to do with forex, it means that so much naira will be chasing a few dollars.

“And since we don’t have the influx of dollars into Nigeria, the after effect is that the landing cost of petrol will continue to increase as long as the dollar continues to rise,” the National Public Relations Officer, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Chief Chinedu Ukadike, stated.

He added “The rise in dollar automatically leads to an increase in the cost of petroleum products, except the NNPCL is subsidising it through the Federal Government. I also recall the last statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media, who said he got a brief from the president that the fuel price would not rise.

UK’s skilled worker visa scam leaves Nigerian victims stranded, renews struggles

Some individuals who came to the UK on a skilled worker visa are facing a grim reality – the jobs they were promised do not exist.

Among these individuals is Blessing (name changed to protect her identity), a woman from Nigeria who shared her ordeal with Sky News. Having paid £10,000 to an “agent” in Nigeria for a skilled worker visa, she arrived in the UK with high hopes of working as a carer, only to discover that no job awaited her.

“I should be in a position of helping, not receiving aid,” Blessing expressed with a mix of frustration and helplessness as she spoke anonymously to Sky News in the corridor of a food bank. Her dreams of financial independence and self-reliance were shattered upon realizing that the promised job was a mere illusion.

Blessing recounted her journey, disclosing that she had paid a significant amount to the agent in Nigeria, trusting the promise of a legitimate job opportunity in the UK.

However, when she arrived in the country three months ago, her hopes were dashed as she found herself without work and dependent on handouts. The emotional toll has been immense, as Blessing, a diligent and hardworking individual, grapples with the reality of her situation.

Her story is not unique. An investigation by the UK-based news platform has unearthed a widespread issue of abuse within the skilled worker visa system. Middlemen are allegedly profiting from individuals seeking jobs in the UK as carers, exploiting their hopes and dreams.

In Greater Manchester, the Nigerian Community Centre operates a food bank to support individuals like Blessing who are struggling to make ends meet due to false promises.

Mary Adekugbe, the founder of the center, expressed her concern over the increasing number of skilled worker visa holders needing support, describing the situation as “shameful.” Many who come to the food bank have skilled worker visas, reflecting the scale of the problem.

LAGOS SECURITY ALERT!

"If you can avoid lone night driving for now, please do."

Lately, there's been reported multiple cases with similar pattern of killings and armed robbery orchestrated by men in military uniforms in Lagos.

Information at our disposal indicates that the killers who reportedly operate around Ikeja, Oshodi and Ojodu-Berger axis mount late night checkpoints and target lone drivers who they rob and kill. At least 3 cases have been reportedly confirmed.

Lagos West Senator Olamilekan  Adeola aka Yayi has also raised an alarm on this as his senior aide, Adeniyi Oluwatosin Sanni, in the early hours of Saturday August 5, 2023 fell victim on his way home towards Isheri.

Sanni was stopped at a checking point around Ojodu- Berger Area of Lagos by ‘security agents’ who asked him to provide the documents of the car he was driving, which he did through a call to his wife who sent all the documents to his phone WhatsApp.

That was the last she heard from her husband and the body of Mr. Sanni, ridden with bullets, was later discovered at Toyota Bus Stop area of Oshodi, close to a military barrack.

The state assembly lawmakers on Tuesday confirmed the cases and called on Gov Sanwo-olu to summon a security meeting.

Speaker, Dr. Obasa, who stressed that security of lives and property is one essence of government, added: "Where we begin to have one, two, three killings in the State, it definitely calls for concern.

"At least three people have been declared dead, said to be killed by men in either Police or Army uniforms and we cannot conclude if they are security men or otherwise."

Hon. Joseph Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho 2) recalled that earlier in August, 2023, a resident, Adeniyi Sanni, was murdered. He said there were two other incidents on August 17 and August 19.

"The funny thing is that the series of killings took the same pattern. Adeniyi Sanni's wife told me that her husband was stopped at a checkpoint by men in military uniforms. They requested for documents which the wife sent through WhatsApp to him. His co**se was later found somewhere.

N2m 'Token' Given To Senators Meant For Office Running Cost Not ‘Enjoyment Allowance’ – NASS Management

The Management of the National Assembly has disclosed that the payment of N2 million to each of the 109 Senators last week was meant for the running costs of their offices.

The clarification by the Senate’s bureaucracy was contained in a statement by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Magaji Tambuwal and signed by the Secretary, Research and Information, Dr. Ali Umoru.

The statement lamented the criticisms that greeted the payment of the money since the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, made it public shortly before the federal lawmakers embarked on their current annual recess.

It explained that the funds were actually appropriated for in the 2023 National Budget.

Part of the statement read: “The attention of the Management of the National Assembly has been drawn to the persistent mischaracterization and misunderstanding of the payment of a N2,000,000.00 allowance to each senator.
“It should be noted that the two million naira is part of the running cost of the office of each senator as provided for in the 2023 budget.

“The allocation for running costs is not a new development; it has been a standard practice.

“These funds are utilized to facilitate various activities that directly contribute to effective representation, legislative activities and other initiatives aimed at serving the interests of the people.

“For the avoidance of doubt, and for emphasis, the said allowances were budgeted for in the 2023 Appropriation Act.

“It is part of the running cost of the office of each Senator of the 10th Assembly.

“The allowances are therefore an entitlement and not a privilege or largesse distributed to the Senators.

“However, given the wrong impression the subject matter has created, it has become imperative to make this clarification and put the records straight.

“The National Assembly remains committed to transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.

“We appreciate the continued support and understanding of the Nigerian people as we work together to uphold the principles of democracy and good.

After Tinubu, CBN Governor’s Meeting, Dollar Crashes To N790 At Parallel Market

The dollar has crashed to between N805 to N790 at the parallel exchange market on Tuesday Daily Trust can authoritatively report.

It started a steady decline from N925 to N930 that it was exchanged in the morning till around 4:00 pm when news about a possible Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) intervention filtered through to the Bureau De Change (BDC) operators.

Recall that the CBN announced plans to take critical decisions to reverse the slide of the naira in the next few days, thereby resulting in significant losses to the speculators.

The acting CBN governor, Folashodun Shonubi, dropped the hint on Monday while briefing State House reporters after a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Checks by our reporters at Allen Avenue and Bagada in Lagos suggest that the BDCs are buying at N900 and selling at N910, after touching N970 to the dollar earlier in the day.

At the Wapa forex market in Kano, the BDCs are buying at N875 and selling at N905 to the dollar.

Further checks at Zone 4 BDCs market in Abuja revealed how the money speculators in the area were taken unawares by the development.

However, at the Investors and Exporters window, the dollar opened at N789/$, got to a high of N799/$ and a low of N740/$ and eventually closed at N774/4, N10 higher than the N764/$ it closed the previous day.

Reacting to the development, one of the money exchange operators who spoke to our reporter said, the dollar may crash further adding that many people will lose money because they purchased the dollar at a higher rate than what it is being exchanged for.

A customer who spoke to Daily Trust said, he asked about the exchange rate in the morning and was told it is being exchanged at N930 to a dollar.

He however said on coming to exchange it in the evening he was told that it has crashed adding that, the first price he was told was N850, but in less than 30 minutes, it crashed to N790 and when he was left without a choice, he has to exchange it at N790.

Police, DSS storm NURTW national secretariat, arrest President, 3 others

The Nigerian police have arrested the President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW ), Tajudeen Baruwa and three others.

The police also sealed off the National Secretariat of the union located at Garki 2, Abuja.

Others arrested are General Secretary, Anthony A*ogwa Chukudi; Olayi Odion; and National Trustee, Principal Assistant Secretary, Abdulrasak Yemi. The officers are currently being detained at the Wuse Zone 3 Division.

It was gathered that the officers were arrested on the premises of the secretariat at 5 pm on Friday when armed policemen and personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS) invaded the secretariat and asked all the occupants to vacate the building.

They said it was an order from above and they have detained our president and other leaders at Wuse police station.”

It was gathered that the union in May 2023 held the election that produced the new officials that were supposed to be formally inaugurated today (Saturday), August 12.

Efforts to reach FCT police spokesperson Josephine Adeh were unsuccessful as a voice prompt said her mobile line was unreachable.

Niger military ready for dialogue, says junta

General Abdourahmane Tchiani, has agreed to explore diplomatic dialogue to resolve the political impasse in the country.

Tchiani spoke on Saturday during a meeting with Nigeria’s intervention team comprising Islamic scholars led by the national chairman of Jamatul Izalatu Bida Waikamatu Sunnah, Bala Lau.

According to a statement personally signed by Lau on Sunday, the cleric told Tchiani that “the visit to Niger was to engage in constructive dialogue to encourage him and other military leaders behind the coup to embrace dialogue instead of war to resolve the crisis.”

Responding, Tchiani said, “their doors were open to explore diplomacy and peace in resolving the matter.”

Tchiani expressed sadness that the Economic Community of West African States issued ultimatums without hearing the junta’s side of the matter.

It was learnt that Tchiani, according to Niger Republic’s Prime Minister, Ali Zeine, was ready for a dialogue, expressing hope that the talks with ECOWAS would take place in the next few days.

Zeine noted, ‘’We have agreed and the leader of our country has given the green light for dialogue. They will now go back and inform the Nigerian President what they have heard from us. We hope in the coming days, they (ECOWAS) will come here to meet us to discuss how the sanctions imposed against us will be lifted.”

West African leaders on Thursday ramped up the rhetoric against Niger’s coup leaders, ordering the deployment of a regional standby force to restore democracy in the coup-hit country.

Niger Republic has been engulfed in political chaos since late last month, when President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted in a coup d’etat by the presidential guard.

ECOWAS responded days later by enacting sanctions and issuing an ultimatum to the ruling military junta: stand down within a week or face a potential military intervention.

That deadline came and went on Sunday, August 6, without any change in the political situation. ECOWAS leaders have said their preference is to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis and would send in troops as a last resort.
