GREATER IKOM WATER SUPPLY SCHEME RESUMES OPERATIONS
BY: EYO EYO
The greater Ikom Water Supply Scheme has resumed operations with successful test run and pumping of water from the intake station to the treatment plant and distribution channels, after more than 3 years of inactivity.
This follows the directive by the Managing Director of the Cross River State Water Board, Chief Victor Effiom Ekpo for the station to pump water when he visited the area in continuation of his tour to water establishments and sub-stations under operations of the state water board.
Areas the Managing Director inspected included the intake station, generating plant, the treatment plant and distribution outlets.
Speaking with newsmen after the inspection, the Managing Director of the Cross River State Water Board, Chief Victor Effiom Ekpo stated the commitment of the Cross River State Government towards the supply of portable water to households and institutions in the state especially in the post COVID-19 period to sustain general sanitation and improved hygiene conditions.
Chief Victor Ekpo said the feat in bringing the Ikom sub-station back to life has come through the gesture of Governor Ben Ayade whom he said, is passionate to ensure that the state water board functions effectively within its mandate to provide clean and portable water for households in the state.
“Let me commend Senator Professor Ben Ayade for his concern and support for us to be able to resume operations in the Ikom sub-station. We are quite aware of the challenges facing the sub-station which principally had to do with theft and vandalization of water cables. At the same time, we have been able to put things in place. This is why I want the station to pump water before I leave Ikom to Calabar”.
On general complains of shortage in the workforce needed in the Ikom sub-station, Chief Effiom Ekpo promised to strengthen the workforce in the station by posting staff
