WATER BOARD DECRIES INCIDENCE OF PIPE LINES DESTRUCTION.

Amidst increasing demand for water, the Cross River State Water Board has decried incidence where water board pipe lines and installations are being destroyed through activities of road construction.
Managing Director of the Cross River State Water Board, Chief Victor Effiom-Ekpo who raised the alarm while on an inspection of on-going progress of work at the Odukpani scheme said water board losses tens of thousands cubic meters of water daily through broken pipes by construction firms.
He said the delay in the connection of critical areas in Odukpani LGA to the Calabar treatment plant CTP, was as a result of damage of the major linkage pipeline from Calabar along the Calabar-Odukpani highway occasioning the highway construction and expansion work.
According to the indefatigable MD, while road construction firms aim at development, they owe it a responsibility to recognize the cooperate right of all the public liability companies that also focuses on development adding, water installations are capital intensive.
“Road construction firms must recognize the corporate rights of other public companies. They should show commitments when they destroy or damage water pipelines and installations in the course of road construction.”
He however gave the assurance that the state water board will resume operation on its Odukpani axis and called on the people of the area to always report cases of broken pipes to water board offices and substations.

GREATER IKOM WATER SUPPLY SCHEME RESUMES OPERATIONS

The greater Ikom Water Supply Scheme has resumed operations with successful test run and pumping of water from the intake station to the treatment plant and distribution channels, after more than 3 years of inactivity.
This follows the directive by the Managing Director of the Cross River State Water Board, Chief Victor Effiom Ekpo for the station to pump water when he visited the area in continuation of his tour to water establishments and sub-stations under operations of the state water board.
Areas the Managing Director inspected included the intake station, generating plant, the treatment plant and distribution outlets.
Speaking with newsmen after the inspection, the Managing Director of the Cross River State Water Board, Chief Victor Effiom Ekpo stated the commitment of the Cross River State Government towards the supply of portable water to households and institutions in the state especially in the post COVID-19 period to sustain general sanitation and improved hygiene conditions.
Chief Victor Ekpo said the feat in bringing the Ikom sub-station back to life has come through the gesture of Governor Ben Ayade whom he said, is passionate to ensure that the state water board functions effectively within its mandate to provide clean and portable water for households in the state.
“Let me commend Senator Professor Ben Ayade for his concern and support for us to be able to resume operations in the Ikom sub-station. We are quite aware of the challenges facing the sub-station which principally had to do with theft and vandalization of water cables. At the same time, we have been able to put things in place. This is why I want the station to pump water before I leave Ikom to Calabar”.
On general complains of shortage in the workforce needed in the Ikom sub-station, Chief Effiom Ekpo promised to strengthen the workforce in the station by posting staff

WATER BOARD EMBARKS ON OPERATION RE ORGANIZATION
As part of efforts towards attaining a high level of efficiency
and productivity, management of the state water board has
embarked on major operations re-organization.



Under the exercise, revenue staff of the water board are now re-grouped with set targets and a charged to account for revenue collected on water bills and arrears of water bills owned the water board by a sizeable number of water household consumers and public institutions in the state.
Managing Director of the state water board, Chief Victor Effiom Ekpo who introduced the reforms in Calabar at a recent meeting with management and staff of the water board, said the measures became necessary to check cases of redundancy among the staff and to ensure proper line of staff control.
'’Our vision is to produce and supply portable water for services of our teeming consumers but we are constrained due to lack of sufficient funds to carry out our operations'’
'’ Water board is worried over cases of no payment of water bills and indebtedness by public institutions. We are appealing, let them pay to enable us meet up with our obligation''.
Also affected in the re-organization are meter readers, bill distribution and plumbing operations.

Water Board Disconnects Consumers in Calabar
The state water board limited has disconnected several household in Calabar From it’s main water supply.
The action follows non-compliance to payment of water bills by the affected household and illegal connection.
A team of water board illegal connection task force led by the managing director, Chief Victor Effiom Ekpo who carried out the exercise, discovered several illegal connections and by-pass by consumers around Nsemo and Ikot Eyo in the Calabar Municipal area.
Speaking with newsmen, water board managing director, Chief Victor Effiom Ekpo decried the attitude of water consumers in Calabar who are in the habit of tempering with water board meters, illegal connections sale water board water without passing through due process.
Also speaking the general manager, Barrister Bassey Mensah called on water consumers to always visit water board office and water board sub-stations to make enquiries concerning water connections and to always pay their bills as at when due, adding that those who are disconnected will only be re-connected on payment of their outstanding water bills.
