Uduak Akpan, the killer of late job seeker, Iniobong Umoren, in Akwa Ibom state attempted to escape after he was sentenced to death by hanging but was stopped by prison officers.

Suddenly, life became important to him and he tried to save himself from dying.

I keep telling people, there is nothing profitable in crime. It always ends in regrets and shame.

The best you can do for yourself is stay away from crimes as much as you can. In fact, run away from it.

You can survive hunger, even pains but when you freedom is taken away from you, you will understand how empty this life is.

Nothing is as priceless as your freedom. Absolutely, nothing.

Court Orders DSS To Pay Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer N5m Over Rights Violations

A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, April 04, 2022, ordered the federal government to pay N5 million to Maxwell Opara, one of the lawyers for the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, for violating his rights.

Recall, Opara had in September 2021 dragged the Department of State Services (DSS) to court demanding damages.

Opara, told the court that the DSS had on August 30, 2021, when he paid a routine visit to Kanu, commandeered him to a particular room within its facility for purposes of alleged bodily search, “wherein they forced him to remove his medicated eye-glasses, wedding ring, belt, jacket and shoes and accordingly left him shabbily dressed”.

He told the court that he was subjected to the humiliation of holding his trousers with his hands, wearing bathroom slippers meant for awaiting trial inmates and exposed to Air Conditioner inflicted cold for three hours.

He asked the court to compel the DSS and its Director-General to issue a written apology and publish the same in two national daily newspapers.

Opara, prayed the court to award him N50m as compensation for the infringement of his fundamental rights to dignity and a human person.

In her judgement on Monday, Justice Zainab Abubakar granted all the reliefs the Applicant sought in the suit, though she reduced the damages from N50m to N5m

🏷️NEWS FLASH:

IRAQ 🇮🇶 FAILS AGAIN TO ELECT NEW PRESIDENT

Iraqi lawmakers failed again on Saturday to elect a new president due to the lack of a quorum in parliament, keeping the country mired in political paralysis.

Parliament had issued a final list of 40 candidates for the post, a largely ceremonial role that by convention is reserved for a member of Iraq’s Kurdish minority.

The contest pits Barham Saleh, the incumbent and a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), against Rebar Ahmed of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the PUK’s rival.

But the lack of a quorum — set at two-thirds of the house’s 329 members — held up the vote for the second time since February, deepening war-scarred Iraq’s political uncertainty.

Only 202 lawmakers showed up for the latest vote, a parliamentary official told AFP on condition of anonymity, and a new session had to be scheduled for Wednesday.

Following the session, parliament speaker Mohammed al-Halbusi said the “lack of a quorum forces us to continue holding sessions until it is achieved”, the state-owned Iraqi News Agency reported.

The postponement exacerbates Iraq’s political problems because it is the task of the president to formally name a prime minister, who must be backed by an absolute majority in parliament.

On February 13, Iraq’s supreme court ruled out a presidential bid by KDP-backed veteran politician Hoshyar Zebari, after a complaint filed against him over years-old, untried corruption charges.

Iraqi politics were thrown into turmoil following last October’s general election, which was marred by record low turnout, post-vote threats and violence, and a months-long delay before the final results were confirmed.

INDEFINITE STRIKE LOOMS AS ASUU CLAIM "NOTHING TANGIBLE HAS HAPPENED DESPITE WARNING STRIKE "

The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, has stated that nothing progressive has emerged to see an end to the warning strike embarked upon by the body.

The ASUU’s strike which is in its fourth week has been hinged on the union’s demands on the revitalization of public universities, earned academic allowances, renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, and inconsistencies in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system.

Prof. Osodeke, who was a guest on Channels Television’s show, Sunrise Daily, expressed his disappointment at the state of affairs and the government’s inability to fulfill the promises it made two years ago.

“I can assure you nothing tangible has happened, nothing visible; nothing you can say has been done,” the ASUU president said during the breakfast show.

“We have met with the Minister of Labour twice and all they are saying is the same old promises that they have been talking about.”

The ASUU president bemoaned what he called the government’s “lack of interest and will” in the public university system as their demands can be settled in a meeting between both parties.

“We met with the President on 1st of February and raised this issue with the President and the President promised to address it and he appointed a three or four-man committee to look at it; the Chief of Staff, Minister of Labour and Minister of Education and the Minister of Finance, it was all over the country and till today that committee has not called us for a meeting,” he explained.

➢ A LIE TO THE COUNTRY !

According to Prof. Osodeke, the ongoing discord over the choice of Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS, proposed by the government and the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) platform developed by the university lecturers was due to the lack of transparency.

“When you have dishonesty in the system, you have those problems; we listened to the report by National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), that it didn’t pass the test but I came with documentation to show their report”

“If a program is subjected to a test and it scores 77% would you say it failed? If a program is passed through an end-user test and it scores 88%, would you say it failed?

“Let NITDA and the Federal Government tell the Nigerian people whether they have tested IPPIS,” he said

He accused NITDA of giving misleading reports to Federal Executive Council on the UTAS platform as they were never present at any of the agreed meetings.

“The DG of NITDA will never attend any meeting, the Minister of Communication will never attend any meeting but these people who were not there and not properly briefed will they have gone to brief FEC that it did not pass which is not correct.”

“If you subject this to a test today, we will have 99%, but they went ahead to tell the country a lie and this is why they are creating problems in this country,” the ASUU president added.

He was also critical of the government’s nudge towards a platform that hasn’t been tested in the country as one that had been developed locally.

“So, you brought a foreign process to a country developed by a company outside the country and they brought it to your country to pay your salary and you didn’t test it.”

“But the one developed by your academics, intellectuals scored almost 80-90% and you say there was no integrity,” Osodeke noted.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says there may be no extension of the registration deadline for the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the registrar of the board, dropped the hint while monitoring the registration exercise in some centres on Friday, in Lagos.

According to him, feelers reaching the board from states across the country reveal that the exercise has been seamless, hence there may be no room for an extension.

“We are not expecting any extension. I want to say that we are very happy with the way the exercise has been going, two weeks after it started.

More than 55,000 have already registered today alone and we had expected at least 50,000 to register as of today, nationwide. But for the few disruptions witnessed in some of these centres, it is possible to register even 100,000 candidates in a day

“Our target is to make sure that about 100,000 candidates registers in a day. So far, I must say I am very satisfied with the registration exercise nationwide.

“It gladdens my heart because it shows that we are on course, despite the few glitches witnessed in the registration exercise in some centres, there has been a huge progress made,” he stated.

Ngige Asks ASUU To End Strike, Says FG Has No Money

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has said his Finance counterpart, Zainab Ahmed, will find means to pay the earned allowances to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities because the Federal Government does not have money.

ASUU had on Monday, February 14, 2022, announced the commencement of a four-week strike following the failure of the government to honour some of its long-standing demands.

Following the strike, Ngige arranged a negotiation meeting with the union.

Though ASUU insisted that it would not call off its strike, Ngige said the implementation of most of the union’s demands were in progress.

But Ngige, while briefing our correspondent on the outcome of the meeting with ASUU on Tuesday, explained that the government had no money but the finance minister would look for how to pay the earned allowances to the lecturers.

On the issue of UTAS, he said the meeting mandated a joint committee of ASUU, the National Universities Commission and the National Information Technology Development Agency to conduct an integrity test on the platform in conjunction with neutral experts.

Ngige added, “We told them to conclude the test by March 8. If they conclude, we are expected to work on it within six weeks.

“Once we conclude the reconciliation, if the Federal Government is in arrears on any tranche, the finance minister will look for money to pay, even though the Federal Government does not have money.

“Earned allowance is an allowance for excessive workload. Last year, it was paid based on the rule of the thumb theory of 10 per cent of the total personnel cost. This year, we have told the NUC to put up a committee and within the next three weeks, come up with a figure that will be sent to the Finance minister.

“For me, I think we are on course; ASUU should go to the members and show them offers made to them by the government so that they can call off the strike.”
