ABOUT 20 INDIVIDUALS LINKED TO FIRES IDENTIFIED, MICKOSKI CALLS FOR ARSON TO BE CLASSIFIED AS TERRORISM

The Government said on Tuesday that Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, responding to a journalist's question during the day regarding the renewed arson in Skopje and the statement of the Minister of Internal Affairs [in an interview] in which he denied that there were people setting fires, said that he would not go into whether he had been denied by the Minister of Internal Affairs.

“You saw this morning, a clear recording of arson in a building that broke out this morning at 4:30 am. I was continuously on the line with the mayor of the Municipality of Kisela Voda and with the minister and with the people from the fire department of the City of Skopje. You saw how brazenly arson is being set and that is just another proof of what I have been saying all along, that unfortunately, there are power centers that are trying to instill fear, panic among citizens before the elections. And the answer to the question of who it suits, I think that with a very brief analysis you will get yourself, if you do,” said Mickoski.

According to the press release, the Prime Minister underlined that the Ministry of Internal Affairs has identified about twenty individuals who are suspected to be behind this whole process.

“At the same time, we have had certain reports that we have been collecting in recent days and in a coordinated action, the Ministry of Internal Affairs with the Ministry of Environment will act in the coming days. So, unfortunately, there are structures that, in this way, I would say, are trying to bring instability and unrest,” the Prime Minister pointed out, according to the Government press release.

Media reports that Prime Minister Mickoski, answering journalist's questions on Tuesday, called for legislative amendments that would classify arson as terrorism.

“Within the framework of the parliamentary procedure, I discussed with the coordinator of the VMRO-DPMNE parliamentary group that urgent amendments to the laws are needed that would classify arson as an act of terrorism, and dumping waste where it does not belong would be another crime punishable by a prison sentence of more than five years,” Mickoski underlined.

Ministers Mucunski and Gerapetritis expressed satisfaction with the meeting, at a time when both sides are dedicatedly working to improve relations between the two countries. They had an open conversation and exchange of views on several issues of common interest.

Minister Mucunski expressed sincere gratitude at the meeting for the solidarity that Greece showed during the tragedy in Kocani and the recent emergencies near Dojran.

“These were not just gestures of help – but real acts of friendship,” Mucunski stressed.

The meeting also discussed security – both regionally and globally. Joint action within NATO and the need for close coordination in these uncertain times were reaffirmed. At the same time, the ministers addressed the process of Euro-integration of the Republic of North Macedonia into the European Union. In this regard, Minister Gerapetritis emphasized the strong support for our Euro-integration path.

"I would like to once again emphasize Greece’s support for North Macedonia’s progress on its European path, based on the established conditionality and the principle of own merits, with particular emphasis on the fundamental criteria," added Greek Minister Gerapetritis, according to a press release.

Respect for international public law remains imperative for both sides, and bilateral relations, as before, will be based on mutual understanding as neighbors and allies in NATO, the two ministers concluded the meeting.

The focus of the meeting was on promoting cooperation between the two countries, and the emphasis was placed on the potential for economic cooperation between the two countries, as well as on cooperation in the areas of infrastructure and energy.

"Our focus was also on results that bring benefits to citizens. Investments. Trade. Infrastructure. Energy. We discussed projects like Corridor X and the gas interconnector – not only as technical projects, but as drivers of growth, security and regional connectivity," emphasized Minister Mucunski after the meeting, reads the press release.

Ahead of the meeting with the Greek Foreign Minister, Mucunski wrote on Facebook that in Athens, alongside the head of the Directorate for Technological Industrial Development Zones (TIDZ), Goce Dimovski, he will also meet with the management of the Greek company Rontis, which has invested and operates in the country.

After the meeting, Mucunski said on Facebook that he had an excellent and constructive meeting with Gerapetritis, discussing bilateral and regional cooperation, the advancement of political and economic relations between the two countries, the potential for new investments and the expansion of energy cooperation, adding that the focus was also on the country's Euro-integration path.

“Solidarity, partnership and mutual respect are the foundation for stronger ties. We jointly reaffirmed our commitment to further advancing relations, the importance of respecting international law, partnership within NATO and cooperation in multilateral organizations,” Mucunski wrote.

According to the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at a joint press conference in Athens, Minister Gerapetritis noted that they had the opportunity to discuss frankly and exchange views on various issues of mutual interest, adding that they also discussed the state of bilateral relations and agreed to explore ways to deepen cooperation in the future.

“United by geography, our nations stand side by side, ready to help and support one another in times of need, such as during humanitarian disasters. Acts of solidarity strengthen our trust and bring our people closer together,” Gerapetritis said.

He noted that Greece strongly supported North Macedonia's accession to NATO in 2020 as a fully-fledged member state and emphasized that Greece wants to enhance interaction within the Alliance.

According to a press release from the Greek MFA, reiterating Greece's support for advancing North Macedonia's European path, Gerapetritis stressed the “utmost importance of the full, consistent, and bona fide implementation of the Prespa Agreement, including the erga omnes use of the country’s constitutional name.”

Underlining that upholding and preserving the rules-based international order is imperative in the face of emerging asymmetrical challenges and threats, the Greek Foreign Minister stressed that at this pivotal moment marked by instability, armed conflicts and civil strife, adherence to international law is essential.

“We must remain committed to upholding the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and exercise vigilance,” said Minister Gerapetritis.

He concluded by emphasizing that as an elected member of the UN Security Council, Greece has been collaborating with all member states, including North Macedonia, to achieve international peace and security goals.

MICKOSKI EXPRESSES GRATITUDE TO KONRAD ADENAUER FOUNDATION: PARTNERSHIP AND COOPERATION CONTINUE

Today we are gathered to mark a partnership, and we are here to express gratitude. Let us acknowledge the contribution of an ally, of a vision, of a value platform that has become part of our contemporary history and path, said Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, addressing a reception on Tuesday on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the active engagement of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) in the Republic of North Macedonia, according to the Government.

Mickoski noted that the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, named after one of the greatest European statesmen of the 20th century, is an ambassador of the democratic idea and a testimony that values can travel across borders, across generations and through difficulties — and to root stability, dialogue and hope.

The Prime Minister mentioned the words of German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, according to whom history is not shaped by words, but deeds, and deeds begin with vision and courage.

“Starting from the time when our society was facing transition, economic and political uncertainty, the Foundation has been present — with trainings, with public debates, with support for civil society organizations, with education of young people. It acted with respect. With understanding. With the will to build and listen. And it is precisely in those difficult times that true friendship is built. Not when it is celebrated, but when there is doubt. Not when it is easy, but when it is necessary,” Mickoski pointed out.

Prime Minister Mickoski emphasized that the Konrad Adenauer Foundation believed in us, as he said even when others hesitated.

“Our path to democracy was not a straight line. We had our own mistakes, stumbling blocks, disappointments. But we always had partners who believed in our capacity for progress. The Konrad Adenauer Foundation believed in us even when others hesitated. It believed that we could become part of the European family. That the young people here deserve a future in their homeland. And therefore, when today we talk about Euro-integration, the rule of law, the fight against corruption, freedom of the media — we know that behind these processes there are not only political declarations. There are years of investment, cooperation and vision,” said the Prime Minister.

Mickoski once again quoted Konrad Adenauer according to whom "peace is not only the absence of war, but also the presence of justice, stability and human dignity."

“This thought is more relevant today than ever in a world where democracy is under pressure, where new walls are being raised, and old values are being questioned. We need institutions that will remain strong, we need alliances that are not based on interest but on ideals, and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation is just such an ally. And it is no coincidence that many young people who are politically and civically active today experienced their first debate, their first lecture, their first trip to Europe through the programs of this foundation," the Prime Minister said.

He thanked the Konrad Adenauer Foundation for the trust and cooperation so far, expressing hope that it will continue in the future.

“Let it inspire new youth, new ideas and new hope. Let the friendship between Macedonia and the Federal Republic of Germany continue,” said Mickoski.

NOVA MAKEDONIJA: DEFEAT OF FASCISM IS LARGELY DUE TO JOINT EFFORTS OF USSR AND USA

The defeat of fascism and Na**sm is largely due to the joint efforts of the Soviet Union, the United States and the United Kingdom, led by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

When humanity was faced with the most extreme ideologies, a large number of nations united around the principles of the anti-fascist struggle and joined the allied countries led by Moscow, Washington and London. The anti-fascist struggle as a political platform united several nations and states, but different ideological movements, such as anarchism, communism, republicanism, social democracy, socialism, conservatism and liberalism, and the unification was based on the understanding that fascism and Na**sm are an existential threat to humanity. The Macedonian people also joined this anti-fascist struggle, who also made their contribution with several thousand partisans.

Today, 9 May, as the Day of Victory over Fascism, is celebrated in several countries, but this day is inextricably linked to the political existence of the Macedonian people, because the Macedonian state was built on the principles of anti-fascism, i.e. democracy, different beliefs, equality before the law for all regardless of nationality, gender, race and religion, as well as guaranteeing the right to vote and the personal and national rights of minorities, something that is obvious from the decisions of ASNOM.

Macedonia, as a nation, state and society, must not forget 9 May, the Day of Victory over Fascism, not only because of the fact that the Macedonian state emerged from the anti-fascist struggle, but also because this struggle put an end to radical extremism and chauvinism as state carriers, but also the fact that a new international order emerged from the anti-fascist struggle, which is embodied in the United Nations.

MUCUNSKI: MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS EXPRESSES SINCERE GRATITUDE TO ALL FRIENDLY COUNTRIES FOR SELFLESS ASSISTANCE PROVIDED

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Timco Mucunski, at a press conference dedicated to the tragedy in Kocani, expressing sincere and deep condolences to the families of the deceased, emphasized that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, with all its capacities, is at their disposal and is actively working to provide necessary assistance and support, according to the Ministry.

The Minister noted that a crisis headquarters was established on Monday morning, which coordinates the process of sending injured Macedonian citizens for treatment abroad. Mucunski said that he held phone calls with his counterparts from Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Türkiye, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Kosovo, Malta, Hungary, Israel, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia, as well as with Richard Grenell on behalf of U.S. President Donald Trump's administration, who offered support and assistance in dealing with the crisis.

“After intensive communication with my colleagues, in just less than 12 hours from the accident, the first patients were on their way to the countries where their treatment has already begun. As of this morning, a total of 51 Macedonian citizens have been sent for treatment in the following countries: Türkiye – 9 patients, Bulgaria – 14 patients in three hospital facilities, Greece – 4 patients, Serbia – 17 patients, Lithuania – 4 patients, transported by plane provided by Romania and Hungary – 2 patients. The contact list is published on the Ministry's website, reads the press release.

Minister Mucunski added that at a government session he will propose that the General Affairs Department covers the costs of travel and stay abroad for family members of Macedonian patients receiving treatment abroad.

It was pointed out that, in addition to direct communication with each country, the Ministry has also activated the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, which enables coordination of assistance between all member states. Assistance in the form of material and technical resources and expert support from medical personnel is expected in the coming days.

Minister Mucunski also informed about the activities that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade has been implementing since the days of mourning were declared in the Republic of North Macedonia.

"Let me emphasize that, starting today, days of mourning have been declared by a decision of the Government. The flags of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, as well as in all diplomatic and consular missions, are flown at half-mast, and books of condolences have been opened in the Ministry and diplomatic and consular missions, intended for diplomatic representatives in the country and all those who wish to pay their respects abroad," he informed.

On this occasion, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade expresses sincere gratitude to all friendly countries, not only for the expressions of sympathy, but also for the selfless assistance provided in organizing medical transport and treating some of the injured Macedonian citizens, said Minister Mucunski.

NOVA MAKEDONIJA: EUROPE SHOULD RESPECT WILL AND VOICE OF CITIZEN

Macedonian citizens have demonstrated a high awareness and responsibility for what national interests mean in these more than three decades of independence and have constantly demonstrated this before every new challenge that the country faces. Time has shown that every civil reaction and resistance to certain decisions that concerned the future of the country were completely correct, so from this time distance it can be concluded that if politicians had listened more to the voice of the people, then the country would be in a much better situation than the one it is in today.

“Namely, Macedonia is once again stuck in the European waiting room, languishing for more than two decades in anticipation of starting accession negotiations with the EU, and in the meantime making many painful concessions, including a name change, only to end up receiving nothing but humiliation,” the newspaper writes.

After all that ordeal, the country is once again faced with a new challenge called constitutional amendments as a condition for finally starting the opening of the negotiation chapters. And while politicians are searching for the most painless way to secure constitutional changes that will allow predictability in the negotiation process with the EU, the majority of citizens are once again categorically against any change to the Constitution.

Confirmation that this is so are the results of the latest joint survey by the Institute for Democracy “Societas Civilis” – Skopje (IDSCS) and the local office of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, which show that only 20 percent of citizens support the inclusion of Bulgarians in the Constitution, and the same number of citizens believe that the negotiations should stop, or the negotiating framework should be changed. And it was precisely the Union that imposed conditions that the country had to meet on the Euro-integration path, regardless of the fact that the majority of citizens opposed such conditions. Official Brussels forced a territorial division in 2004 and a change of the country's name, ignored an unsuccessful referendum, blackmailed with the French proposal, and now with constitutional amendments and the inclusion of Bulgarians in the Macedonian constitution, without at any moment respecting the will of the majority of Macedonian citizens. For the EU, neither the failed referendum on the name, nor the rivers of people in the streets opposing the French proposal were sufficient signals of popular resistance, but only their European interests. All these examples clearly show that the EU does not respect the will of its citizens, and it is precisely such an approach that threatens to increase public distrust of the Union itself and the principles that Europe once stood for. That the EU is moving away from its principles, limiting democracy and interfering in the internal affairs of states was recently warned by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance in his address to the Munich Security Conference.

The American message is more than direct and clear, that Europe can no longer ignore the will of its citizens and interfere in their elections, regardless of whether they are in line with the policies of official Brussels.

Some domestic analysts also believe that the EU has completely distanced itself from its citizens and its own principles, resulting in civil resistance.

“As it is, dysfunctional and rejected by world trends, divided into internal blocs that push their own interests, the EU is heading for nothing but disintegration. That division was also evident at the extraordinary meeting organized by Macron the day before yesterday in Paris. Our people are smart and therefore do not want politicians to continue making mistakes just to please the EU. We voted against the territorial division, against the name change, against the French proposal and they did not listen to us. It turned out that we were right. For any major decision, we must have an exit option, so that the time for making decisions contrary to the will of the citizens has passed and if the EU does not want to listen to the wishes of the citizens, then the Macedonian authorities are the ones elected by the people and must respect the people's will. By the way, let them call a binding referendum and let the people say whether they want constitutional changes. This is the highest democratic act in decision-making, and Europe should perhaps start respecting democratic principles and the will and desires of its citizens, because apparently, as U.S. Vice President Vance recently said, it has abandoned these principles,” analysts conclude.

NOVA MAKEDONIJA: PARTY AGENDAS FOR INTERNAL AND MULTI-LAYERED SEGREGATION

The current divisions in the country along ethnic lines are the result of the wrong policies of the past when, instead of parties being labeled according to their ideological matrix, they were allowed to have an ethnic sign. In this way, the cohesion in Macedonian society was continuously undermined, so that it was constantly burdened with various ethnic issues, instead of with the essential civil problems.

Over the years, this contributed to the establishment of a system of a de facto binational state, in which the winner in the Macedonian and the winner in the Albanian blocs are differentiated exclusively based on the number of votes won by their own ethnic community, which effectively made the country function as a federation because instead of one, there are two winners in the ethnic blocs in the elections, who later form the government. This ethnic duality is also reflected in the institutions, which are filled with ethnic quotas instead of competent and professional staff.

Although it has proven to be extremely counterproductive, this way of functioning still persists and is a constant source of threats to destabilize the state precisely because of the imposition of ethnic issues that are abused only to satisfy certain party appetites. Confirmation that voting on the principle of ethnicity is not disappearing is the latest study prepared by the Institute for Sociological, Political and Juridical Research (ISPPI), in cooperation with the Institute for Democracy “Societas Civilis” – Skopje (IDSCS). The results of the study show that the electoral process is strongly divided along ethnic lines because all ethnic communities in the country almost always vote for parties that represent their ethnic interests in elections.

The research, conducted from 25 October to 4 December, 2024, included 1,056 respondents and showed that political attitudes in the country are largely shaped by the ethnic and party affiliations of citizens.

Where has the ideological system of political, legal and moral views and ideas that express the interests and relations of citizens in society disappeared?!

According to analysts, before each election, mostly by parties with an Albanian sign in their name, ethnic agendas are promised, often on the verge of radicalism, only to come to power and then very quickly forget about the promises made. In other words, this is a classic abuse of citizens for party purposes through the ethnicization of the electoral process. It is being abused even now, especially by the opposition BDI, which since it is no longer in power has constantly played the ethnic card and threatens to destabilize the state. In fact, parties with an ethnic sign are the ones through which ethnic issues were created in the country, from which we still cannot get rid of to this day, the newspaper writes.

MINISTER MUCUNSKI HOLDS WORKING BREAKFAST WITH EU MEMBER STATES AMBASSADORS

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Timco Mucunski, held a working breakfast on Wednesday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade with the ambassadors of the European Union member states to the Republic of North Macedonia, including the Ambassador of the European Union, Michalis Rokas. The meeting was part of the regular practice of exchanging views with the ambassadors, with the aim of informing about the progress of the reforms and exchanging views on current issues in the country's Euro-integration process, according to the Ministry.

Minister Mucunski reaffirmed the position that our country's membership in the European Union is a key strategic goal of the Government, confirming the commitment and hard work of all institutions.

At the same time, he highlighted the concrete efforts being undertaken to advance internal reforms, with a special emphasis on the rule of law, strengthening the legal system, supporting the independence of the judiciary, the fight against corruption, as well as activities for economic growth, increased trade and improving the living standards of citizens. In addition, he highlighted the efforts to continue regional cooperation and the country's continued engagement in promoting good neighborly relations, reads the press release.

"We will continue our role as a constructive partner and example in the region, dedicated to building good neighborly relations and regional cooperation. I assure you that our focus as a Government will be even more strongly directed towards implementing reforms in key areas such as the rule of law and justice, a dedicated and indiscriminate fight against corruption, improving the efficiency of institutions, reforming public administration and strengthening the economic capacities of the country. Such commitment will also continue in relation to the obligations of the Reform Agenda and the implementation of the goals of the Growth Plan as a significant instrument for promoting economic development, mutual cooperation and the rapprochement of the country and the entire region with the European Union," Mucunski stressed in his address.

In this context, he called for mutual responsibility and support from member states to accelerate the country's accession process to the European Union, in accordance with the membership criteria, and to prevent the use of bilateral issues in negotiations with candidate countries.

"I hope and expect that in 2025 we will make major steps towards further alignment with European standards and the final start of the negotiation process by opening the first negotiation areas and chapters. Together with you, through regular dialogue and partnership, I am convinced that we can achieve these ambitious goals," he emphasized in his address.

The European Union Ambassador, Michalis Rokas, spoke in his address about the importance of the rule of law and the implementation of reforms, to which the Reform Agenda will make a great contribution. At the same time, he emphasized the continued support from the Union in the area of reforms, but also the importance of accelerating integration, which according to him will be the focus of the Union's agenda in the coming period.

During the discussion, the ambassadors of the European Union member states expressed support for the country's commitment to achieving the set priorities and in efforts to accelerate the accession process to the Union. The ambassadors also confirmed their readiness to strengthen cooperation and work together to ensure further progress, especially in key reform areas, according to the press release.
