Ahead of the European elections on 6-9 June, the European Parliament signed on Thursday a Memorandum of Understanding with ENEX.

With the Memorandum of Understanding, the European Parliament and ENEX seek to strengthen the collaboration between Parliament’s communication services and ENEX’s headquarters, to increase awareness and cooperation of each other’s services and to fosterdirect contacts.

YOUNG EUROPEAN INNOVATION FUND: DIGITAL NEWS FORMATS

We are looking for five innovative digital video content formats, the winning five will receive up to €15,000 to turn them into a reality and access to top commercial newsrooms across the EU.

These projects should create innovative and easily replicable digital formats for young European audiences, addressing issues they care about, on platforms they use for news consumption. It could be TikTok, Snap, WhatsApp, YouTube shorts, X, Instagram, Discord, Reddit or anywhere you think that young people are and that high quality news information could be supplied in new, creative, accurate and interesting ways. We are looking to the new generation of journalists and producers for exciting ideas that can improve the industry today.

This project is part of a wider European Union awarded to ENEX to promote high-quality news information sharing in the EU.

One ENEX’s longest serving collaborators, Jan De Boer, is retiring this week after a 34 year career at RTL Netherlands. Jan has been a lynchpin of ENEX’s editorial meetings and ensured ENEX members have received many headline stories like the downing of MH17, war crimes tribunals and Dutch politics. Things just won’t be the same without him!

It marks the first time ENEX has welcomed a digital-only publisher into the membership group.

TheJournal.ie operates from its headquarters in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, and covers national and international news across a range of digital platforms.

We are excited to explore the possibilities of this collaboration, and we believe that the addition of TheJournal.ie to our membership group will further enhance the diversity and quality of news content available to our audience.

During this trial membership period, ENEX members will have access to exclusive content from TheJournal.ie, providing valuable insights into Irish news and affairs. Likewise, TheJournal.ie’s audience will benefit from a broader perspective on global events through the international reach of the ENEX network.

An Enex led consortium has won a Euros 1.6m grant from the European Union to develop a next generation video distribution platform for its European and global news partners. The project, called “Create and Exchange”, will utilize AI technologies to allow the rapid translation and transcription of video to multiple EU languages and enhance live news feed distribution.

Technical development is led by BCE which is part of a six-party consortium also including: M6, RTL News Luxembourg, RTL Germany, SIC Portugal and former RTL entities RTL Croatia, RTL TVI Belgium. The platform relies on the latest cloud technologies and replaces a previous hardware-based system. Create and Exchange also includes editorial commitments to explore new video formats, increase the quantity of video material shared between European Union based news partners and the expansion of trusted news to European territories not already included in the Enex partnership.

ENEX Technical Committee brought together the technology leaders from global commercial TV stations in Salzburg, Austria on May 4th and 5th, 2023. Over 50 ENEX partners met at the Bulls Corner at the Red Bull Arena, home of FC Red Bull Salzburg coming from Mexico to Kurdistan.

The conference started with the welcome from the organizers from Servus TV and Red Bull Media House, both part of the Red Bull. Servus TV is the leading commercial TV station in Austria with a wide a range of activities in the Austrian broadcast landscape. Red Bull Media House provides world class global video production for the Red Bull brand.

During the event the discussion on the Technology trends panel brought together Hans Martin Paar, News Director Servus TV, Fabian Dorschel, Global Head of Media Techology & IT Red Bull, Frederic Bochart, Director of Technology RTL Belgium, and Martin Boronski, CTO BCE, and raised some question about the future of broadcasting. Technology could help the media industry under cost pressure by simplifying the production chain. Moving to IP and the cloud to use serverless microservices is the way forward. Challenges are the lacking competences needed for this transformation as well as that the cloud technology is dominated by the US providers.

Gerry Collins, Director of Product Management Mobile Networks from Intelsat provided more information on the interesting topic of how 5G, IP and Satellite are converging to give us a seamless network for contribution and distribution of our stories and signals.

CEO of Fonn Group, Haarvard Myklebust gave us some industry insights as the leading software developer for newsroom production systems.
Our partner 1+1 from Ukraine closed the conference with their impressive presentation on how they are using Starlink terminals to cover the frontline, but also all other news in Ukraine. They see it as very resilient and reliable and are sure it will improve with more satellites in orbit. Ukrainian media received the terminals for free and is not paying any service fees.

There were many networking opportunities, from drinks and dinners to teambuilding exercises. The most exciting one was the Red Bull Gravity Challenge! 12 different teams had to land an egg unharmed from the height of 15 meters. It was a real team effort and… something really unbelievable happened. Two teams actually landed the egg uncracked on hard cement path in the FC Red Bull Salzburg stadium. “The Omellets” took the win with a minimum advantage.

To get ready to jump into the rich day full of new information and exchange of views we needed some help. And the perfect recipe was breakfast on the 15th floor of hotel Cool Mama with the most wonderful view of the Alps.
