"Can-boy” Association Petitions VP Koung
-Begs Inter-governmental Taskforce For A Time In Their Eviction

Saturday, March 30,2024-The “Can-boy” Association of Liberia on Saturday, March 30, 2024, presented a petition to the Government of Liberia through Vice President Honorable Jeremiah Koung over the recent prohibition of combustible petroleum products in jars.

“Can-boys” are Petty traders who sell diesel fuel and gasoline in mayonnaise jars on various street corners in Monrovia and its environs.

The inter-governmental task force issued the prohibition recently with police carrying out raids to curb the illegal trade and clean the streets.

The Association’s President, Bobby Grewe in the petition requested the intervention of VP Koung over their eviction while appealing for more time to have them finally relocate from the streets.

He further proposed the establishment of a mini-mobile exchange both along the streets and in other parts of Liberia for their use as part of a strategy to address the issue of illegal trade and keep the city clean.

In response, the Liberian Vice President applauded the Association for peacefully submitting a petition to the government through his office.

He recognized the contribution of “Can-boys” to the country’s economy while assuring that their concerns would be reviewed by the government.

Vice President Koung then admonished the group to remain peaceful as the Government looked into their concerns.

Vice President Koung maintained that the intent of the inter-governmental task force is not to go after Liberians who are struggling but to ensure the safety of the environment and keep it clean for the citizens.

Former President George Weah did not leave $40m in the government’s consolidated accounts.”

The GAC conducted an audit on the government’s consolidated accounts as of January 17 and 19, 2024, reveals “discrepancies” in the figures claimed by former President George Weah.

Despite his assertion that he left US$40,044,305.90, the audit revealed that he actually left US$3,378,848.89 and US$6,918,142.97 on January 17 and 19, 2024, respectively.

In his farewell message, Former President George Weah, claimed a balance of US$40,044,305.90, while President Boakai asserted a balance of US$20.5 million during his first State of the Nation Address.

This prompted the Joint Committees of the Liberian Senate comprising Public Accounts Audits and Expenditure Committee (PAC) and Banking and Currency Committee to request the Auditor General to perform a Special Reconciliation Audit on the net account balances of the Consolidated Fund Accounts as at January 17 and 19, 2024.

Basis for Conclusion

The report said Management did not prepare periodic / regular reconciliation of the Transitory Revenue Accounts domiciled at commercial banks.
Management did not ensure timely / daily sweep of GOL revenues from the Transitory Revenue Accounts domiciled at commercial banks to the GOL Consolidated Account at the CBL.

Management did not ensure that borrowing from the CBL in the amount of US$83.05Million to finance the Consolidated Fund Account on December 22, 2023 was consistent with CBL Act of 1999 as Amended and Restated 2020 and ratified by the National Legislature.

Consolidated Fund Account had several stale/outstanding cheques amounting to US$9, 144,138.95 and L$457,680,522.71 as at January 17, 2024 and then US$11,836,676.49 and L$457,680,522.71 as at January 19, 2024.
