PRESS CONFERENCE STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 25th, 2024
Re: Opening of the New Marketplace in B**g County, Liberia, and Launch of Health and Sanitation Initiatives for B**g County.

The Superintendent of B**g County in collaboration with the Office of the Mayor of
B**g County, is pleased to announce the opening of the new marketplace in B**g County, Liberia. This significant development took place on the 19th of June, and aims to improve the economic growth and enhance the livelihoods of our esteemed residents.

However, the new market will be officially operational after July 29, 2024 based on the request of His Excellency Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Vice President of the Republic of Liberia.

The new market place, provides a vibrant and conducive environment for local entrepreneurs, traders, and marketers to showcase their products and services. It will serve as a hub for economic activities, fostering entrepreneurship, and promoting the growth of small businesses in the region. Thanks again to the Japanese government for this market place that is indeed a facelift for the County.

In conjunction with the opening of the new market place, the Superintendent & Mayor are also proud to launch a series of health and sanitation initiatives specifically tailored for the marketers beginning with your current location. Recognizing the importance of maintaining hygiene and ensuring the well-being of our citizens, these initiatives will focus on promoting cleanliness, enhancing waste management systems, and providing educational programs on health practices.

In this vein, through the instrumentality of Ambassador Thomas Hne Grant, Ambassador at Large for Investments, for the State of Delaware and the Americas, the offices of the Superintendent & Mayor have established a partnership with the Center for Healthcare Education, Research and Innovation, (C.H.E.R.I.), for the establishment of a preventive health program, to reduce death and dying in the County, most especially amongst the most vulnerable.

This relationship also extends to schools, Pen-Pen and Keh-Keh drivers, and for the first time in this region, a formal School Health Program, and a wellness program have been established. These programs include health screenings and literacy programs, through the use of a telemedicine app called, ownUrHealth™.

This move is most important because early detection of health issues can help prevent the spread of diseases and ensure prompt medical interventions as needed. This collaboration with C.H.E.R.I. and local health authorities ensures that the marketers, school students, Pen-Pen and Keh-Keh drivers, have access to expert medical advice, resources, and support, digitally, to maintain a healthy and hygienic environment in the county. It enhances their knowledge, promotes good health practices, and contributes to the overall well-being of the community.

The Superintendent and her team would like to extend their gratitude to all stakeholders, including the government, local authorities, and community members, for their unwavering support in making this project a reality. The opening of the new marketplace and the launch of these initiatives reflect our commitment to ensuring the fulfilment of President Joseph N. Boikai’s ARREST Agenda, sustainable development and improving the quality of life for all residents of B**g County.

Representatives from the Office of the Superintendent, the Mayor, and local authorities are available to provide further details and address any questions you may have.

LRRRC ADMITS ERROR IN FORMER LIBERIAN REFUGEE DRUG USE DATA

Gbarnga, B**g County – Following a comprehensive screening and validation of former Liberian refugees, the Liberia Refugees Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC) announced a correction to previous information provided regarding drug use among returnees. At the May 28, 2024 MICAT Press Conference, LRRRC’s Executive Director, Hon. Patrick Worzie, erroneously reported the extent of drug use among the refugees.

The LRRRC has clarified that the mistake stemmed from misinformation given to Hon. Worzie by the statisticians involved. Contrary to the initial report, the screening process revealed that only an average number of the returnees were on drugs, not a significant portion as previously stated. The Commission will release detailed numbers on the matter soon.

Apologizing for the error, the LRRRC acknowledged the misinformation shared at the government’s National Platform. As the leading government agency responsible for repatriation, the LRRRC reaffirmed its commitment to providing accurate information about the repatriation process. In response to this incident, the commission has taken serious administrative actions against the staff involved in the misinformation.

The LRRRC assures its local and international partners, as well as the public, that it remains dedicated to transparency and accuracy in all its communications and operations related to the repatriation and resettlement of refugees.

ActionAid Liberia Supports Female Inmates at Gbarnga Central Prison with Sanitary Pads and Hygiene Kits

By: Matalay S. Kollie

June 5, 2024

In support of female inmates managing their menstrual periods and in commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, ActionAid Liberia, through its "Youth Humanitarian Movement and Sexual Reproductive Health Network," has donated sanitary pads and menstrual hygiene items to female inmates at the Gbarnga Central Prison.

Background on ActionAid Liberia: ActionAid Liberia, a member of the global ActionAid organization, has been active in Liberia for over two decades. The organization focuses on various humanitarian efforts, including education, women's rights, and disaster response. Its initiatives are aimed at empowering marginalized communities and ensuring social justice.

The Youth Humanitarian Movement of ActionAid Liberia focuses on providing aid to those affected by crises, while the Sexual Reproductive Health Network emphasizes menstrual hygiene management.

Garmai T. Yarsiah, the Humanitarian Movement Coordinator, noted that since 2022, they have been providing dignity kits, including sanitary pads and hygiene materials, to incarcerated women at South Beach. In 2024, they shifted their focus to B**g County.

She highlighted the need to assist returnees currently housed at the regional camp in Sergeant Kollie's Town, B**g County. "We will be responding soon. We have assessed the needs on the ground and are finalizing our resource mobilization," Garmai noted.

Significance of World Menstrual Hygiene Day: Celebrated annually on May 28, World Menstrual Hygiene Day highlights the importance of menstrual health to the overall physical, mental, and social well-being of women and girls. Initiated by the German-based NGO WASH United in 2014, the day is observed globally to break the silence, raise awareness, and change negative social norms surrounding menstrual health.

Impact of Donations: The donated items included sanitary pads, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bath soap, "Ghana Must Go" bags, and cartons of Clorox and Dettol. Each of the fifteen female inmates at the Gbarnga Central Prison received five packs of sanitary pads, four toothbrushes, two tubes of toothpaste, six bars of bath soap, and a "Ghana Must Go" bag. Additionally, ActionAid Liberia presented two cartons of Dettol and Clorox to the prison management for treating the inmates' bathwater.

The donations significantly impact the daily lives of the inmates. One inmate expressed, "These items make a big difference. Before, we had to manage with very little, and it was tough during our periods. Now, at least we have some comfort and can maintain better hygiene."

Challenges Faced by Female Inmates: Female inmates often face significant challenges regarding menstrual hygiene in prison. Limited access to menstrual products can lead to poor hygiene, infections, and severe discomfort, exacerbating the stress and isolation of prison life.

Future Initiatives: ActionAid Liberia plans to continue its support for female inmates and expand its reach to other prisons across the country. They are also working on launching educational programs within the prison to raise awareness about menstrual health and hygiene.

Statistical Data: According to a study by the United Nations, around 500 million women and girls globally lack adequate facilities for menstrual hygiene management. In many developing countries, including Liberia, the situation is worse in prisons, where resources are limited, and menstrual health is often overlooked.

Call to Action: ActionAid Liberia urges other humanitarian organizations and individuals to support similar initiatives. Those interested in contributing can contact ActionAid Liberia directly for more information on how to donate or volunteer.

Government Role: Superintendent Richard Z.K. Mulbah emphasized the need for government intervention. "We urge the government to provide funding for rehabilitation programs that equip inmates with skills for reintegration into society," Mulbah said. "Organizing such programs would empower inmates and help them rebuild their lives.

Superintendent Mulbah commended ActionAid Liberia for the timely donation and called for continued support. "This donation is a significant help to our female inmates. We hope more organizations will follow ActionAid's example."

The sanitary materials were directly handed to each inmate during the presentation, ensuring that all received the necessary supplies to manage their menstrual health with dignity.

CDC-COP Files a Communication of Inquiry Against the Boakai's Administration to ECOWAS

May 21, 2024

H.E. Josephine Nkrumah
Resident Representative
Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS)

Ref: Letter of Inquiry on Why Did ECOWAS Paid for Mr. Joseph N. Boakai's Private Jet
To Guinea-Bissau just to be gowned as Revealed by Madam MacDella Cooper on Spoon Talk

Dear Madam Nkrumah,
We bring you profound greetings from the oasis of Liberia's biggest civil rights political movement.

The CDC-COP writes to inquire on what basis will the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) pay for a private jet for Mr. Joseph N. Boakai to fly to Guinea-Bissau on a state visit. This statement of claim was made by Madam MacDella Cooper, Political Advisor of Mr. Boakai and we take her revelation with great offence.

The CDC-COP sees this information as evidence of political and financial interfering in Liberia's domestic affairs negativity while siding with a political institution, something that is totally unacceptable according to the tenets of the ECOWAS manifesto of mutual respect and non-interference in the domestic affairs of member states.

The statement of Madam Cooper means that ECOWAS nidocedmously supported the Unity Party candidate during the General and Presidential Elections and they are doing so in the open today without any sense of remorse.

The CDC-COP and the Liberian people want to know why ECOWAS should pay for a private jet when the Executive Mansion of Liberia stated this trip was a working visit to Guinea-Bissau just to be gowned.

We look forward to a swift response because this revelation has the propensity to undermine ECOWAS credibility in Liberia.

Patriotically yours,

Signed:
National Executive Council

Senator McGill Gives UP Government "Negative Zero" in its Hundred Days Performance; Warns President Boakai against Claiming Glory of WECC Establishment

By Kwatekeh FM Radio/TV Staff writer

GBARNGA: May 11, 2024-- Margibi County Senator Nathaniel McGill says the Unity Party government under the leadership of President Joseph Nyamah Boakai has in its first Hundred working Days performed dismally, as such; he grades the government "Negative Zero".

The Margibi County Senator believes with the high expectations President Boakai gave massive Liberians during the 2023 elections' campaign and on the day of his inauguration, his government is yet to meet the expectations of Liberians by fulfilling his promises, especially in his first hundred working days.

Senator McGill named the high increase in the prices of essential commodities ringing from Rice and Gasoline in Liberia, the internal fighting within the Unity Party government, the many missteps in President Boakai's appointments, and the violation of tenure laws amongst others as key areas that the Liberian leader has failed in its Hundred Days deliverables.

The Margibi County Senator further added that the current rehabilitation of roads by the Unity Party government is not in the best interest of the country on grounds that most of the roads under rehabilitation will be greatly damaged in the pending Rainy Season.

At the same time, Senator McGill informed President Boakai that it was very frustrating for him (President Boakai) to have given a false impression and expectations to Liberians knowing that he could not meet the expectations of Liberians by living up to his government's hundred-day plans.

Meanwhile, the former CDC Prime Minister has cautioned President Boakai against claiming glory for the passage of the War and Economy Crimes Court Resolution.

According to the former State Minister, the passage of the resolution that supports the establishment of the War and Economy Crimes Court in Liberia was initiated by the members of the Liberian Legislature, as such; President Boakai and his supporters should stop boasting of being the ones that brought about the establishment of the Court in Liberia.

"The president never did it on his volution, the President did it based on the resolution from the Legislature, so Boakai didn't get up and sign it. It was done by members of the Legislature who told Boakai that he must sign the Executive order so Boakai can't take glory for it, it's the Legislature that should be taking glory for the establishment of the War and Economy Crimes Court in Liberia." Senator McGill added.

Moreover, the Margibi County Senator then attributed his support for the establishment of the War and Economy Crimes Court in Liberia to his willingness to face justice for economic crimes leveled against him by the United States Government.

He added that when the Court is established in Liberia, individuals accused of corruption and crimes against humanity will face Justice to asonorate themselves in the court of law so that the culture of impunity will come to an end in Liberia.

He made these assertions on Saturday, May 11, 2024, during a Live Radio appearance in Gbarnga, B**g County.

New Agriculture Minister Expresses Worriness over CARI's Status; Says the Entity Lacks Infrastructure and Technical Capacity for Human Resource

SUAKOKO: April 6, 2024 -- The newly appointed and confirmed Minister of Agriculture, J. Alexander Nuetah says he is deeply Worried about the current condition of the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI).

Addressing a team of reporters at the central office of the institute on April 5, 2024, in Suakoko District, Minister Nuetah disclosed that following the Bord of CARI's first meeting, he has observed that the Institution currently lacks the Infrastructure and Technical Capacity for Human Resources to do the job.

He added that the situation has therefore created a huge gap in the functions of the only Agricultural Research Institution in Liberia.

Additionally, Minister Nuetah further attributed the downward conditions of CARI to what he described as the lack of proper management of the Institution over the past years and the migration of Technical employees from the Institution.

Moreover, the Liberian Agriculture Minister further noted that the situation at CARI is also attributed to the employment of unqualified individuals to key positions at the Institution over the past years; thus adding that the situation doesn't only affect CARI, but the entire Agriculture Ministry of Liberia.

"CARI doesn't have an infrastructure, CARI doesn't have the Technical Capacity for Human Resources to do the job, so all of these situations have created huge gaps in the day-to-day activities of the Institution" Minister Nuetah asserted.

At the same time, the Liberian Agriculture Minister who also chairs the Board of Directors at CARI has emphasized the need for Human Resource Capacity Enhancement in the Agriculture sector of Liberia to improve the sector.

Minister Nuetah added that the ministry under his watch intends to lace with international partners using the government of Liberia as an institution to appropriately allain the resources with the capacity needs of the Central Agricultural Research Institute.

Interestingly, Minister Nuetah further disclosed that the Ministry is currently working on a plan to revamp the entire Agriculture sector of Liberia, taking into consideration the pivotal role CARI plays in developing the sector.

He also told reporters that under his leadership as Agriculture Minister in the next three to four years, CARI as an elite Research Institute will develop some value chain that will develop the central institution on the National level.

Meanwhile, Minister Nuetah has revealed that in the next forty-five to sixty days from now, and by April 10, 2024, a term of reference and criteria for the appointment of a new Director and Deputy Director Generals of CARI will be instituted.

According to Nuetah, following that, the Board of Directors of CARI will on Apple 15, 2024, publish a vacancy for the position of Director and Deputy Director Generals of CARA, followed by a vetting and subsequent recommendation to President Joseph Boakai for onward appointments to those positions by the end May 2024.

He made these assertions after the board's first acquaintance and discussion meeting regarding the appointment of Doctor and Deputy Director Generals at CARI required by the act creating the Central Agricultural Research Institute.

As it stands, CARI is currently being run by its new Officer-ln-Charge Dr. James Sulonkwiley Dolo.

Less Fortunate Female Found Dead in Gbarnga; as Community Dwellers Complain of Bad Odor

GBARNGA: March 31, 2024, __ The lifeless Body of a less fortunate girl only identified as Dorris was on early Saturday morning, March 30, 2024, discovered on the main street of Gbarnga around the Phebe Parking. The deceased is believed to be between twenty to twenty-five years old.

The deceased, according to Nathaniel Mulbah AKA "The Heat"; a less fortunate youth of Gbarnga, before her unexpected death, came to Gbarnga along with her boyfriend only known as Amos from David Dean's Town in Kokoyah District to live and engaged in business activities.

Nathaniel further explained to our reporter that after two months in Gbarnga, Dorris was later seen in Ghettos consuming Narcotics and also engaging in local prostitution (Hopojo Job) at some night spots in the city.

The attitude of Dorris, according to Nathaniel didn't go well with her boyfriend Amos, thus complaining that he could no longer continue the relationship with Dorris because of her continued involvement in prostitution or Hopojo activities.

Moreover, Nathaniel asserted that following the abandonment of Dorris by her boyfriend Amos, she later left for Ganta and returned with some health complications. He quoted Dorris as being a resident of Nimba County

The less fortunate youth said the worsening condition of Dorris and her swollen stomach led them (ghetto members of the block) to make a contribution of four thousand Liberian dollars (4,000.00LD) as a sign of loyalty to transport Dorris back to her people in Nimba for treatment, but said she collected the money and failed to go for treatment, thus leading to her demise. He then expressed sadness in the passing of Dorris, adding that Dorris was a loyal friend of them and the street as a whole.

Meanwhile, marketers along the main street of Gbarnga, especially at the Phebe Parking area told our reporter that the situation is serving as a serious embarrassment to their daily activities as they cannot bear the bad scents of the almost decade-body.

When contacted, the commander of the Liberia National Police B**g Detachment, Fasu Sheriff told our reporter that the body cannot be removed from the incident scene before three days as provided by law.

He further promised residents of the area that if family members of the deceased cannot show up in the stipulated time to remove the body of Dorris, the LNP will mandate the City Council of Gbarnga to bury the remains of the deceased.
