The 2004 tsunami that struck Sri Lanka was a devastating natural disaster that occurred on December 26th.Triggered by a massive undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra,the tsunami resulted in widespread destruction and loss of life in Sri Lanka and several other countries in the Indian Ocean region.
The tsunami waves, reaching heights of up to 30 meters (98 feet), slammed into the Sri Lankan coastline with immense force.Entire coastal villages were washed away, leaving trails of destruction and displacing countless people.
The impact of the tsunami on Sri Lanka was catastrophic.It is estimated that around 35,000 people lost their lives.December 26th is now recognized as National Safety Day in Sri Lanka, commemorating the tsunami.
As the Isipathana College Media Unit, we remember and honor those who tragically lost their lives in the Tsunami disaster that occurred 19 years ago today.
