Paddy Cultivation -
The beginning of Paddy Cultivation in Sri Lanka, traces its root back to the proud history between 161 B.C. and 1017 A.D. Our ideal climatic conditions yielded a flourishing crop, which encouraged many Sri Lankans to make Paddy Cultivation their way of life. Thus it became a focal point of Sri Lankan lives, knitting a beautiful pattern including the society, culture and religious beliefs in the country. The governing Royal minds of Sri Lanka saw the enriching importance of Rice Cultivation that provoked them to build tanks of extraordinary size and numbers to irrigate the mass scale rice production. At Present much of the human and animal labour is replaced with technology, adding greater deal of efficiency towards the production process.

Sri Lanka’s Tea History
Sri Lanka, or Ceylon, as it was known when it was a British colony, is one of the largest tea producers in the world. It’s said that the first tea plant was brought back (i.e. smuggled!) from China by the British in 1824. It was planted in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, Kandy.

In 1867, a Scottish man and a huge name in tea, James Taylor, started growing the first commercial crop of tea on the Loolecondera Estate in Kandy. Although the first tea factory in Sri Lanka is no longer in operation, you can take a historic tour.

After a blight of the coffee crops, tea began to take over as the main crop of Sri Lanka, and now around 350 million kg of tea per year are exported by Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka makes some of the best tea in the world, and it’s ranked just behind Chinese tea, Indian tea and Kenyan tea.
Tea production in Sri Lanka is huge which is just as well because according to Google, tea is the most popular beverage in the world.

The agriculture sector contributes about 7 percent to the national GDP out of which the fisheries sector contributes around 1.2 percent and the livestock sector accounts for 0.6 percent. Over 25 percent of Sri Lankans are employed in the agricultural sector. Although Sri Lanka is a fertile tropical land with the potential for the cultivation and processing of a variety of crops, issues such as productivity and profitability hamper the growth of the sector.

Sri Lanka’s primary food crop is rice. Rice is cultivated during two seasons. Tea is cultivated in the central highlands and is a major source of foreign exchange. Fruit, vegetables, and oilseed crops are also cultivated in the country. One of President Sirisena’s top priorities is to increase productivity in the agriculture sector. There has been low adoption of mechanization in farming. The president wants to increase mechanization and grow higher value cash crops such as fruit, flowers, and other export oriented crops. The lack of private investment in agriculture due to uncertain policies limits the expansion of the sector.
