I don’t acknowledge any other DJ as my competition.

You cannot have what is mine and I do not want what is yours. At most, I want to collaborate with you and bring our resources together to create something bigger and better than what we started with.

For that reason, it is very clear when I am seen as competition by someone else. The competitive spirit does not ever offer a collaborative effort.

Prepping to DJ an event? Here are some tips.

- always try to good idea of music style desired or just overall energy desired … ask your clients questions on artists they like and dislike, if they want to dance or have background music.

- KNOW your load in/logistical details

-don’t plan your set song by song, try to pre-prep a specialized crate for what you think you will play for the event. This could be your roadmap of music, so you can more comfortably read the crowd and play on the fly

Tips for beginner DJs:
1. You can start today for free! You don’t need to pay for a course or a coach everything is on YouTube
2. You dont need to buy each song individually their are dj record pools and you can pay monthly to get unlimited
3. You dont need club standard equipment they have affordable ones you can buy starting small
4. Networking can get you gigs quicker than you expect
5. Branding is really important if you want to take your music career far

The basics I used during my journey in becoming a dj:

-Mix Beat on beat.
-Mix Break on break.
-Never mix vocal over vocal.
-Don't pitch your tracks too fast or too slow to force a mix.
-Don't rush the next mix especially when a dance floor is vibeing.
-K.I.S.S: Keep it simple stupid.

These basic rules along with a reminder to myself that it's not all about me when I step into a DJ booth has kept me playing.

As a DJ, the constant dilemma is whether to take a night off to enjoy yourself or accept another gig. Balancing work and play is tough, especially when your job is in the nightlife industry. Sometimes, it’s worth it to take the night off and soak in the energy from the other side of the booth.

Everyone wanted to be a DJ.
Now everyone is a DJ.
But because there’s so many DJs and most are DESPERATE for attention and bookings, many play for less than fair rates / accept gigs for free. This devalues an already oversaturated market. And the kicker is - most now defend promoters not paying / promoters that pay the bare minimum because they’re scared of not getting booked at all. This is a terrible cycle.

As a DJ you can’t sit around and wait for:

• The perfect time to release your first song.

• The label to acknowledge your existence.

• The big time agent to discover you.

Instead realize this:

• The perfect time to start creating opportunities for yourself is now.

You have to establish your own momentum before major career and leverage building moments come your way.

But most importantly, it’s impossible if you never start.

Always take risks with music you play!! But be ready throw it back quickly to something that works … this helps you to learn about what people want, and also makes your set a bit more dynamic

Your worst battle is between what you know and what you feel.

Mixtape DJing, Radio DJing, Social Media DJing and Live Event DJing take 4 different types of skills!

I’ll drop a few uncomfortable facts about DJs..

DJs often have to deal with unreliable promoters and venues that don't pay as promised

17/07/2024

All my djs , the most overlooked aspect of djing is the Mc part of it aka being Hype Man aka Crowd Control. DJ don’t be afraid to talk on the Mic and bring your personality out. Trying to create a vibe but also trying to turn the crowd up is a skill all in its own. As a DJ/mc please don’t talk through the whole song! Some times a DJ might bring an hypeman to the show or event and they work as a team .Shout out all the dj/mc out here.

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me As A New DJ, Pt 5:

It’s not promoting. It’s building relationships. That is not the venue’s job.

< 2% of artists are big enough for parasocial relationships. The rest of us rely on real ones. We’re asking for ppl’s time & often $$. If I won’t put myself out there to help people care about my music, why should anyone else?

No one likes being used. That includes fans. These are relationships, & you need to treat them as such. Be attentive & grateful.

While it's a great way to ensure DJs aren't left unpaid, some promoters feel it's a sign of distrust. Should DJs always demand payment upfront, or is it better to build trust with promoters and accept payment after the gig?

As a DJ if I’m djing an event I don’t mine people coming up to me for song request ill play it , now when every 15 mins people coming up to me can you play this , can you play that , do you have this song , I’m charging a dub or more. Then they get mad ! Why this DJ charging me blah blah! , you know I have my set of songs for my mix right ? You know this is a business for me right? I feel people, clients , customer have a hard time understanding this what’s your experience djs?

99% of DJs network the wrong way

How to network with a bigger DJ🔥

1. Support on socials w/ comments + share their posts, for a while.
2. Reach out, ask about their goals and how you can help (even if you feel like you can’t yet)

You will stand out amongst the other 100 DMs, because NO ONE does this.

KEY🔑: have genuine interest in who you are reaching out to.

BONUS🏆: consistently creating content yourself so they know you’re serious about building your brand.

You can be a dope DJ and human & still:

- say no to requests
- walk away from low ball offers
- walk away from toxic environments
- make mistakes
- take breaks from gigs
- set boundaries
- disagree with people
- stand up for yourself
- protect your time, energy and space

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me As A New DJ, Pt 4:

It’s your responsibility to know the $$$. You need to agree on the amount & know the payment terms (timing, method, contingencies) BEFORE you agree to an event. Get it in writing, even if it’s just a DM.

If you don’t get this, you’re basically agreeing to play unpaid. They may still pay/tip you, but I’ve seen a lot of new DJs assume all gigs are paid, & you’d be surprised.

Here’s how you can ask, negotiate & decline if need be

11/07/2024

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me As A New DJ, Pt 3:

You have to be memorable. Complaining about that won’t change it. You want to come to mind when organizers are discussing who to book & when ppl are deciding which shows to attend.

If you don’t stand out, you will miss out.

Some quick science: Memory is all about neural connections, which are strengthened by:

1) Frequency: More exposure = stronger synapses

2) Intensity, specifically of the emotions we attach to an event

11/07/2024

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me As A New DJ, Pt 2:

Few will see DJing as work. From a cousin’s remark about you “going out all the time”, to a partner questioning why you share your contact info (ps- have a separate DJ account & be stingy w/ your phone #, especially women) or a fan upset you won’t take a shot before your set.

It takes considerable effort to make ppl understand the long hours & multiple jobs involved. It can weigh on you. But stay professional. Amateurs fizzle out.

11/07/2024

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me As A New DJ, Part 1:

You need to learn the difference between friends, fans, ppl who want to learn from you, ppl who want to take from you, mentors, collaborators & haters.

They can look very similar and not being able to discern them will cost you a lot of mental peace, forward motion & opportunity.

Each one requires a different set of boundaries. Boundaries—another thing I learned years in that I wish I’d mastered Day 1.

Library management might seem boring, but it’s the backbone of a great DJ set. Keeping your music organized means you can quickly find and play the perfect track for any moment. This efficiency not only saves time but also allows you to focus on your creativity and interaction with the crowd.

5 ways to ruin your DJ career:
1. Being rude Your reputation matters just as much as your skills. The quickest route to losing gigs is by being disrespectful.
2. Stop practicing Practicing consistently sharpens your skills and ears.
3. Stop digging Playing the same tracks the same way every time might cost you gigs.
4. Drinking too much There's a fine line between having a good time and getting wasted. No one wants to see their DJ completely out of it. DJing is fun, but it's also a job.

3 DJ ethics tips
1. Always be humble Show respect to everyone you work with whether it's other DJs, booker or venue staff. Being humble opens doors to positive connections and potential collabs.
2. Be prepared Know your music and set well. Being well-prepared not only boosts your confidence but also ensures a smooth performance.
3. Be on time Punctuality matters. Arrive early to set up your equipment, do soundchecks etc. It shows professionalism and respect for everyone involved in the event.

I feel like a lot of DJs think that more gigs will magically fall out of the air the longer you DJ and the truth is… it doesn’t work like that and some people are just too lazy to get their bookings out of the mud bc they’d rather wait around and be found.

If anyone ever says DJing is easy
You're not pushing yourself enough
It's a valid point that playing a finished track is easy transitioning to another song is easy
But skill is required to successfully throw down a banging hour long performance! Set yourself apart from every other DJ
Do live mashups
It is Possible to have a challenging DJ set
And that's why there's been Dj competitions for a long time showcasing talented DJs

The stem feature has revolutionized the DJ world🫡 It's now easier to mix songs, but some DJs overlook the importance of the tracks themselves. When I use stems, I focus on the groove and sometimes the song's meaning🙌

What do you guys think of the stem feature?

Surviving is winning
Seen DJs come and go
So if you still here
Applaud yourself
Give yourself grace
You made it this far
Keep winning
