1000 HEALINGS IN ONE DAY

A lot have been written about the likes of Ayo Babalola ,Benson Idahosa and other foremost fathers of the Pentecostalism movement in Nigeria, but before the emergence of these patriarchs ,there was a prophet in Niger Delta in the mold of the biblical prophet Elijah. He is one of the originators of the African Independent Church movement and the first Nigerian Christian charismatic figure whose Prophetic Movement, between
the years 1914 and 1916 spearheaded a strong religious awakening in the Niger Delta.

Prophet Garrick Sokari Marian Braide, the first known healing prophet in Nigeria was born in 1882 in Obonoma, a small Kalabari village in the Niger Delta. He later became a Christian and was baptized on January 23rd, 1910 at St Andrews Anglican Church in Bakana.

Braide’s approach to teaching and ministry was very different from that of the Mission Churches, he contextualized the Gospel among the Niger Delta people, encouraging the use of native language of the Ijaw people and not Igbo, this made Christianity available to the average person. He also introduced the use of indigenous songs, which revitalised the mode of worship and taught the people to renounce their gods ,destroy their fetishes and believe in the Lord Jesus.

While a lot have been said about the July 10, 1930 revival which saw Apostle Ayo Babalola, Orekoya, Omotunde wrought great deeds, the day 16th September 1915, was another day of wild, explosive, unrestrained manifestation of the supernatural .It was actually a day that publicized Garrick Braide to the world as a prophet of God. People who had heard of his apostolic manifestation from coast towns and people from Bonny, Ogoloma, Abonnema, Opobo, and to Ibo hinterland all converged and as they came, they asked for signs and it was recorded that about one thousand and fifty seven souls were miraculously cured of various ailments and diseases in a day.
