APA Insurance in partnership with IFC Unveils APA SHEild Programme to Enhance Financial Well-Being for Kenyan Women

APA Insurance and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) have launched a program called APA SHEild to increase access to affordable financial products for women in Kenya. The program focuses on health, wellness, personal wealth, and savings insurance, and will provide workshops and webinars to equip women with knowledge and tools to support their personal and professional financial development and security. The program aims to improve the well-being and livelihoods of Kenyan women, contributing to the country's social and economic development. According to the World Bank, 31% of Kenyan households are women-headed, making women more vulnerable to physical and financial shocks. Insurance and financial guidance can support women to protect themselves, their families, communities, and society.

APA has developed a range of women-centric non-life and life insurance solutions, including health, wellness, wealth, and protection, as well as additional value-added products and services. The program includes a Women's Cancer Care Programme called 'APA Femina Plus', which offers regular screenings and HPV vaccinations for breast and cervical cancer, as well as a cash benefit in the event of a positive diagnosis.

The partnership between APA Insurance and YuBuntu aims to create an innovative, total wellness solution exclusively for women, making a tangible and measurable impact on the lives of women and girls in Kenya.

The Act aims to enhance service delivery, openness, accountability, and equity in taxation, and increase revenue collection for key priority projects. The County Government will publish a comprehensive schedule of fees and charges in one document. The Act was passed unanimously by the Nairobi City County Assembly, influenced by public participation and input. Key highlights of the Act include increased charges, reduced charges, and environmental issues.
Market stalls: We initially proposed 30% levies and charges on the market stalls. However, after public participation, the charges were revised to a moderate 10% increment.

· City inspectorate: The impounding charges were retained in some areas and reduced in others to drive compliance.

· Outdoor advertisement and signage: We increased application fees for outdoor advertising.

· Physical planning, land, and housing: We had proposed to increase rent by 25% but following consultations we have only increased by 10%.

· Market services: We had proposed to increase charges but following the recommendations we have retained the old charges.

· Parking. The new law introduces new parking zones that are well defined, with new charges introduced for the registration of taxis and boda-bodas.

· Alternative Provision of Basic Education and Training (APBET) Schools we have reduced their annual fee from Ksh10,000 to Ksh3,000

Marrakesh is hosting the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group Annual Meetings from October 9th to 15th, 2023, marking 50 years since the last African convention. The theme is "For a Synodal Church Communion, participation and mission." Global financial leaders are urged to embrace a vision for Africa rooted in unity, collaborative action, and transformative mission, and to promote urgent measures to address African countries. Most African countries are still struggling to regain their 2019 economic performance level, with nearly 600 million people living in poverty and 280 million experiencing hunger. The challenges posed by the Ukraine war, regional conflicts, increasing living costs, and climate vulnerability add to the difficulties faced by the most vulnerable on the continent. Africa stands out as the most climate-vulnerable region, suffering from the consequences affecting lives, livelihoods, and economies. In preparation for the 2025 jubilee years, the Holy Father Pope Francis urged leaders to prioritize the well-being of all humanity and make choices that promote life for themselves and future generations.
We Put the following appeal
1. Remove the obstacle of debt that prevents many countries from having the resources to invest in chrisis response and protect their most vulnerable.
2.Massively Scale up the flow of resources to development in affordable terms.
3.prevent new cycles of high indebtedness by setting foundations for responsible lending and borrowing

The Ministry of Health officially launched the second phase of a comprehensive polio vaccination campaign set to commence from Saturday, 7th October, and conclude on Wednesday, 11th October 2023. This campaign marks a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to combat the recent polio outbreak that surfaced in Garissa County in June of this year.

During a media and stakeholder meeting held yesterday, Ms. Mary Muriuki, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, reiterated the Ministry's unwavering commitment to eradicating polio in Kenya.

She pointed out that despite initial progress, recent cases in Garissa County underscore the persistent presence of the virus. In response, she emphasized the need for decisive action to safeguard our children and communities.

"I, therefore, urge all parents to ensure their children receive all the required vaccine doses to prevent further polio outbreaks. This process begins with the birth dose and continues with additional doses at 6 weeks, 10 weeks, and 14 weeks," urged the Principal Secretary.

Ms. Muriuki also announced that the upcoming campaign would target 10 high-risk counties, namely: Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Lamu, Kitui, Machakos, Kiambu, Kajiado, Nairobi, and Garissa. The campaign, scheduled from Saturday, 7th October, to Wednesday, 11th October 2023, aims to reach 3,119,158 children under 5 years of age across all targeted sub-counties, with a goal of reaching approximately 3.1 million children in this age group.

Expressing her gratitude, Ms. Muriuki thanked all stakeholders for their invaluable support in the previous vaccination round, which achieved an impressive 104.2% coverage of the target population across four counties.

2nd October 2023 – Nairobi, Kenya – MP Shah Hospital today became the first
hospital in Africa to join the CaReMe Global Alliance in a landmark collaboration
to improve outcomes for patients with cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic
(CVRM) diseases in Kenya, including conditions like diabetes, heart failure and
chronic kidney disease.
Spearheaded by global pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, the CaReMe
Global Alliance is dedicated to transforming CVRM care from an approach that
targets each condition individually to one that treats all three comorbidities as
one.
This approach has already shown to improve clinical outcomes, reduce costs
and enhance resource utilisation in partner hospitals worldwide, paving the way
for a more sustainable healthcare model. As a member of the Alliance, MP Shah
Hospital is the first in Africa to embark on this innovative and integrated model of
streamlined CVRM care.
Affecting the heart, kidneys, and pancreas, CVRM diseases collectively comprise
the leading cause of death worldwide,1 with each condition amplifying the risk of
further complications. Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), which include
CVRM conditions, are on the rise in Kenya, accounting for over 50% of inpatient
admissions and 40% of hospital deaths, consuming a significant portion of the
healthcare budget.2
This new collaboration aims to address this rising burden in Kenya, aiming to
engage 400 patients in the iCaReMe registry in the first year. Key objectives
include integrating cardiology, diabetic, and renal clinics, managing patients
holistically, and evaluating outcomes based on the CaReMe Model approach.Beyond the immediate benefits to patients, this partnership underscores Kenya's
commitment to pioneering advanced healthcare solutions and positioning the
nation at the forefront of medical innovation in Africa.
Khomotso Mashilane, Medical Director for AstraZeneca in African Cluster, said:

Press Release
Innovative public and private collaboration to end pregnancy and new HIV infections among
adolescents in Kenya launches a groundbreaking $10.1 million Development Impact Bond.
Nairobi, 21st September, 2023 – The UN in Kenya, led by UNFPA, UNAIDS, WHO, and the SDG
Partnership Platform, in collaboration with the Government of Kenya, a global non-profit
organization Triggerise, the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), and Bridges
Outcomes Partnerships today announced the roll-out of a new Development Impact Bond (DIB)
for adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) in Kenya. This innovative Bond will fund
the delivery of high-quality, adolescent and youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services,
including HIV testing and treatment, to adolescent girls aged 15-19.
Kenya experiences significant challenges with teen pregnancy and new HIV infections among
adolescents. One in six adolescent girls between 15 and 19 years has ever been pregnant. In 2022,
an estimated 7,307 new HIV infections occurred among adolescents and young people aged 15-
24, accounting for 41% of all adult new infections in the country. Adolescent girls and young
women are particularly vulnerable and account for 78% of new HIV infections among adolescents
and young people of the same age (National HIV Estimates 2023).
The ASRH DIB will address the problem of teenage pregnancy, new HIV infections, and AIDSrelated deaths among vulnerable adolescent girls in Kenya, focusing on challenges such as the lack
of information about sexual and reproductive health and rights and inadequate access to services
tailored to young people. The programme will be implemented in ten counties that experience a
significant burden of HIV and adolescent pregnancy, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Homa
Bay, Bungoma, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Kakamega, and Busia.
