Sunset over tropical storm Francine in the southern Gulf of Mexico as it steadily gets its act together and begins the march towards to the Louisiana coastline. The NHC are forecasting a category 2 landfall Wednesday afternoon (and possibly into the evening.)

Meanwhile in the western Pacific future tropical storm Bebinca is stewing near Guam. The intensity guidance is very mixed with this one but it's going to track north west and eventually threaten land. I'll be on standby in Tokyo tracking this system and waiting to deploy if it significantly intensifies.

Typhoon Yagi is only a few hours away from its final landfall, in Vietnam. There’s plenty of deep convection in there and it remains a powerful storm. There’s a significant storm surge and wind threat on the coast (that wind threat extends inland too) and a major flood threat for mountainous inland areas. All those in this storm’s path, stay safe!

Super typhoon Yagi is only hours away from crashing into China's Hainan island and the Leizhou peninsula. It undertook a textbook eyewall replacement cycle, and re-intensified back into a powerful super typhoon again. I just put this video together explaining what's going on, the expected impacts and why I'm not chasing this formidable typhoon

Yagi is now a typhoon and has that looks of a storm that's going to intensify significantly. Impressive spiral banding, deep convection around the center and an eye that's becoming better defined. Little has changed overnight with the forecasts - continued strengthening into a major (cat 3+) typhoon is expected and landfall on N Hainan or Leizhou peninsula. After that a possible second landfall in Vietnam.

The second image below shows the latest radar imagery out of Hong Kong. You can clearly see that meaty band in the northern part of the storm showing up. These bands are likely to start sweeping across Hong Kong into tomorrow bringing heavy rain and squally winds. Tropical cyclone signal 1 is in effect right now

Severe tropical storm Yagi is re-organizing in the West Philippines Sea after trekking across northern Luzon. The official forecasts and model guidance are ominous - they show a slow moving, rapidly intensifying typhoon taking full advantage of the warm sea surface temperatures and low shear as it moves towards China's Hainan island or the Leizhou Peninsula. If it tracks further south than expected then Vietnam could receive heavy impacts too.

The JMA forecast a minimum pressure of 935hPa with sustained winds of 95kts (10 minute average) which suggests a cat 4 peak intensity is quite likely. Friends in Hong Kong and Macau can expect blustery winds and squally showers over the next couple of days as Yagi passes by to the south,

The name Yagi means sheep / goat in Japanese and was contributed by Japan.

What a typhoon - after a 30hrs slog Josh Morgerman - icyclone and I are safely back at base in Kagoshima city after witnessing the full wrath of typhoon Shanshan as the strongest part of the eyewall slammed ashore in Makurazaki city. Josh always writes excellent summaries of his chases so I'll be sure to share that when it's published but in the meantime here's a taste of what it was like

Typhoon Shanshan update, Kagoshima city: Fierce gusts are ripping across Kagoshima Bay, I suspect this is localized down-sloping effect in the lee side of Sakurajima volcano. The pedestrian bridge we’re on is swaying in the wind. I saw a similar phenomenon here in 2022 during typhoon Nanmadol.

After driving to Wakayama early Sunday and subsequently watching the models dramatically shift and slow down Josh Morgerman - icyclone and I decided to head back to Tokyo and “reset” the chase.

We’re now waiting for our flight to Kagoshima. The latest forecast track from JMA is very concerning, a powerful typhoon Shanshan crawling up the west coast of Kyushu tomorrow subjecting large swathes of the island to atrocious weather for many many hours. The flood threat will be huge too.

More updates once we’re on the ground…

Reunion concert! James Reynolds and I haven't chased together in over a decade. But here we are, hunting Typhoon SHANSHAN in Japan.

The last eyewall we punched was the cataclysmic Super Typhoon HAIYAN in 2013. That was a life-changing event for both of us. I was so rattled by it—by the ghastly things I saw—I even lost my will to chase for a little while.

But life continued and we both got on with things—and so much has changed since that terrible day: James and his wife have had two children; I've developed a TV career (after having never been in front of a camera); and we've both built houses.

But some things don't change: we're still two hungry chaserdudes, prowling the earth for cyclones. Great to be hunting together again. 👊

Woke up hoping for clarity, only to get to the complete opposite. Major shift westward in track now puts Kyushu firmly in the cross hairs coupled with GFS & ECM now stalling / crawling typhoon Shanshan after landfall, which substantially increases the flood risk over a wide area.

Tropical Storm Shanshan currently lurks over 2000km south of me and as each hour passes the odds of landfall increase. Both the GFS & ECM ensembles shotgun blast Japan. The exact landfall location is unknown right now with cone stretching from Tokyo to Kyushu. It also likely to become a cat 3 (or stronger) typhoon. Watching it closely and ready to deploy later this weekend. Images via JMA, TropicalTidbits and WeatherNerds.

What a beast - rarely does the atmosphere support such intense storms so close to eastern Honshu and Tokyo, but typhoon Ampil is an exception. It still poses a threat but Japan is extremely fortunate this won’t make landfall. Time (for me) to hit the coast

Typhoon Ampil chase initiated! Made my way back to Tokyo and will be up early tomorrow to work the coast of Chiba between Katsuura and Choshi. I’m not expecting the centre to make landfall but it could bring very rough weather to coastal areas. More updates tomorrow

Sunrise over strengthening typhoon Ampil - there are often fine lines with tropical cyclones, and the trend east over the last day or two in track looks likely to spare Japan a destructive landfall (unlike Faxai in ‘19.) that being said, expect rough weather and travel disruption in the Tokyo region as well as eastern Honshu tomorrow.

Tropical Storm Ampil poses a significant threat to south east Honshu with metro Tokyo and Kanto Plain well inside the cone. Current guidance shows 50/50 coin flip it makes landfall, what’s concerning is how aggressive the models are with intensity. If you live in coastal Chiba, Kanagawa or have travel plans in and out of Tokyo later this week please keep a close eye on the forecast.

The “tropics” are getting messy near Japan. Tropical storm Maria is slowly trundling across northern Honshu bringing heavy, flooding rain and Son-tinh should harmlessly dissipate offshore in next day or two. However my attention is firmly on the tropical depression to the south west, future Ampil. The models are aggressive in strengthening this system and bringing it uncomfortably close to eastern Honshu (and Tokyo) later this week as a typhoon. I’m watching it closely

Yesterday, SW Japan was rocked by a powerful M7.1 earthquake centered just offshore Miyazaki prefecture in Kyushu. The maximum seismic intensity recorded was Shinto 6-, which is severe and damaging. A 50cm tsunami was recorded along parts of the coast in the immediate vicinity of the epicenter.

Now here the really unusual part of all this: the Miyazaki event concerned Japan’s Meteorological Agency so much that they issued a “mega quake advisory” for Japan’s Nankai trough region, an ocean trench that lies offshore Shikoku and Honshu and site of previous devastating mega thrust earthquakes. There’s certainly no need to panic but this is the perfect time, especially if you live in coastal areas of Japan, to familiarise yourself with your tsunami evacuation route, check your supplies and have a plan if the worst should ever happen.

August is the month I step away from the computer, put “work” on hold, and spend quality time with my family deep in the woods of Japan’s Nagano prefecture. And keep one eye on the weather models of course. A little snapshot of star gazing with my kids the other night.
