Typhoon Shanshan update, Kagoshima city: Fierce gusts are ripping across Kagoshima Bay, I suspect this is localized down-sloping effect in the lee side of Sakurajima volcano. The pedestrian bridge we’re on is swaying in the wind. I saw a similar phenomenon here in 2022 during typhoon Nanmadol.
Typhoon flying - it ain’t for everyone! Safely on the ground in Kagoshima with Josh Morgerman - icyclone and starting our coverage of typhoon Shanshan in earnest.
Woke up hoping for clarity, only to get to the complete opposite. Major shift westward in track now puts Kyushu firmly in the cross hairs coupled with GFS & ECM now stalling / crawling typhoon Shanshan after landfall, which substantially increases the flood risk over a wide area.
Current condition in Taito beach, Chiba - the outer fringes of typhoon Ampil are packing a real punch
Small fishing harbours all along the coast of Chiba taking the brunt of the rough seas and large waves spawned by typhoon Ampil
Good morning from Umihotaru, a highway rest area right in the middle of Tokyo Bay. I’m heading east to the exposed Pacific coast of Chiba. Conditions will continue to deteriorate as the day goes on as typhoon Ampil nears the coast of Japan
Currently set up in Suao, Taiwan as typhoon Gaemi starts to lash the city - powerful, damaging gusts now ripping through the city
Daybreak in Heping on the Hualien - Yilan county border, deep in the most mountainous stretch of Taiwan’s coast. #typhoon #Gaemi has exploded into a cat 4 - a small, violent system and I’m expecting very erratic movement as the centre nears the coast. This is going to be extremely hard to nail down the tiny core in the this terrain. More detailed updates on conditions and impacts as the day progresses
The atmosphere is agitated. Dramatic skies north of Yilan on the north east coast of Taiwan as squalls associated with typhoon Gaemi roll ashore off the Pacific
Hello from the north coast of Taiwan - here to cover #typhoon #Gaemi. The storm’s about 36hrs out from landfall in the Yilan / Suao region so I’ll be staying put in this area for now, watching it closely.
A Billion Dollar Wobble - When Monster Typhoon Saola Threatened Hong Kong
Typhoon Saola (2023) - the storm that gave Hong Kong its biggest scare in years. But thanks to a number of factors, including a track parallel to the coast, a small core and rapid weakening a billion dollar + disaster was narrowly averted. That aside, it still packed a punch...
Two earthquakes near Tokyo today - M5.4 in Chiba and M4.3 in Ibaraki. Recorded via RaspberryShake seismometer #earthquake #japan #tokyo
#hurricane #beryl an early season powerhouse hurricane’s rampage through the Windwards Islands as a cat 4. This fearsome storm should start to weaken soon.
It packed major hurricane winds that lashed Taiwan for hours and dumped over 1500mm of rain (that's almost 5ft) in the mountains. This was my first cat 3+ to shoot in HD(V) and it left me in awe of the raw power and brutality of a major tropical cyclone. Strap in and let's head deep into the core of 2008's typhoon Sinlaku.
Tropical Storm #Alberto now packing sustained winds of 50mph. You can see deep convection flaring near the center and the outer bands drenching the east coast of Mexico. Landfall expected in less than 12 hours
The world’s toughest lights 💪
June 2015 - Sinabung volcano in Sumatra, Indonesia unleashes a series of terrifying pyroclastic flows, superheated avalanches of volcanic debris and ash. Continued growth of an unstable, viscous lava dome at the summit lead to frequent collapses of volcanic material and these fearsome flows. Sinabung was one of the benchmark erupting volcanoes of the 2010s.
The volcanic crisis lasted for years and to this day Sinabung still presents a threat to nearby communities.
6 years ago the Kilauea eruption in Hawaii was in full swing. It lasted for 5 months, spewing lava from up to 24 fissures and destroyed hundreds of homes. So much magma drained from the summit reservoir resulting in the collapse of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater. #volcano #hawaii #nature
