I Collective Soul nascono su impulso di Ed Roland (voce, chitarra), che insieme al batterista Shane Evans e ad altri musicisti poi "persi per strada" dà vita alla prima formazione del gruppo a Stockbridge (Georgia, USA). Roland, figlio di un pastore battista che non gli permetteva di ascoltare musica, si diploma in chitarra in un conservatorio di Boston, e lavora come tecnico del suono in uno studio di registrazione. I suoi primi tentativi con i Collective Soul naufragano nel 1992 per i troppi rifiuti delle case discografiche. La sorte gli arride quando comincia a far girare un demo della canzone "Shine", con l'intenzione di proporla ad altri artisti. La Atlantic si mostra interessata, e Roland ottiene una possibilità: i nuovi Collective Soul, con Evans, Ross Childress (chitarra), Will Turpin (basso) e il fratello di Ed, Dean Roland (chitarra), incidono il loro primo album HINTS ALLEGATIONS AND THINGS LEFT UNSAID, che supera il milione di copie vendute grazie a "Shine", che riceve svariati premi come "canzone rock dell'anno". Tra il '94 e il '95 partecipano a "Woodstock '94", a un album tributo a John Lennon (Beatles ed Elton John sono i favoriti di Ed Roland), e fanno da supporter ai tour di Aerosmith e Van Halen. Dopo l'album COLLECTIVE SOUL, che ottiene riscontri estremamente positivi, quando nel 1997 pubblicano DISCIPLINED BREAKDOWN, l'entusiasmo attorno al loro rock profondamente americano si è un po' affievolito. Escono ancora due dischi e una raccolta, poi la band si prende una lunga pausa, per ritornare nel 2004, con YOUTH, seguito da AFTERWORDS, entrambi pubblicati dalla EMI. Nel 2009 esce invece COLLECTIVE SOUL, nuovo disco anche questo eponimo come quello del ’95, che porta la band ad avvicinarsi alla top 20 americana per la prima volta in 10 anni.
