The Meghalaya Assembly Session seems to be filled with Emotional Useless issues rather than Talking and Debating on Important Socio-economic issues that really affect the state growth and development.

Even the Question raised on The State being most Corrupted is sparked by pseudo emotional concerns rather than trying to find why it is so corrupted? Maybe if instead on being fuelled with emotions the Opposition could have demanded that all departments and those recieving Govt grants be Put under social Audit and then placed before the Lokayukta or the Court.

KAM, An Alternative to Meghalaya Power Politics!!

PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO THE CAMPAIGN. EVERY PENNY COUNTS.
PLEASE ALSO SHARE THE APPEAL IN YOUR CIRCLES.

Help & Support Progressive MLA Candidates in Meghalaya

Dear Friends,
We are reaching out to you with our *Video Appeal* for your support in raising resources for the election campaign of Angela Rangad, Wanpynhun Kharsyntiew, and Kyrsoibor Pyrtuh of KAM Meghalaya for the MLA elections in Meghalaya in February 2023. Many of you have contributed to this fundraising effort. In the first round of our fundraising we raised about 10 Lakh rupees in funds and in kind and in order to continue the momentum we have built so far in all three of our constituencies and to give a final boost to our efforts, we aim to raise 15 lacs in the next 15 days. It may seem like a tall task but we believe it is possible!

Although our budget for this campaign of three candidates is embarrassingly low considering the electoral tradition of Meghalaya, we still need to reach out to more people and that’s why we are writing to you.

If you wish to contribute, here are the bank details of the candidates. You can contribute to any of their accounts by Bank Transfer or UPI. You can also help us by sharing our appeal with your friends and family.

People's contributions towards our campaign, over the last 6 months, have been quite encouraging and have played an instrumental role in enabling us to reach close to 70% of the households in each of our constituencies. They have contributed to our initial printing and publicity efforts along with public meetings, street meetings, pocket meetings, and other forms of engagements to crowdsource ideas to build a people’s manifesto for the state and our constituencies. We have also been able to launch an anthem of solidarity Ka Kam Kan Ialam where leading musicians of Shillong also contributed immensely.

We also have set up two campaign offices - one in South Shillong (Laban) and one in East Shillong (Malki). Lastly, unlike other campaigns in Meghalaya, our publicity and outreach is multilingual - Khasi, English, Hindi, Bengali and Nepali - which has proven to be a very successful strategy for mobilization so far.

So Please Help Reach our Goal.

Thanks & in Solidarity

Thma U Rangli-Juki (TUR) Sees failure in Meghalaya growth.

NO PEACE WITHOUT ECONOMIC JUSTICE

Meghalaya is staring at a developmental abyss of hunger, unemployment, poverty, food insecurity & malnutrition. The recently released NITI Aayog district level report on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the NE States highlights the glaring failures in terms of social development, where our state is at the bottom of important indicators. This report points to a rot in our governance, & as we move towards 50 years of statehood, we as a people should not have stared into extreme hunger, malnutrition, unemployment, food insecurity, increasing poverty of our farmers, & a lack of clean water & sanitation. It is a wake up call for us as a society that Meghalaya, when it comes to the real bread & butter issues like development and quality of life of the people, where Meghalaya was once better comparatively, but now it is among the worst performing states in India.

Whereas other states in India are enjoying the fruits of development, in Meghalaya we do not talk about these fundamental issues. The reason that Meghalaya has turned into a failed state is because of the existence of an industry of patronage amongst representatives like the MLAs and MDCs & the political class, along with the bureaucrats & non-state actors. If we allow this corrupt industry of patronage to continue we will never have true development.

NITI Aayog in its report for the NORTH EASTERN REGION DISTRICT SDGs, has ranked all the districts of North Eastern Region (including Sikkim) vis-a-vis their performance in 15 Sustainable Development Goals of No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health & Well Being, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Clean Water & Sanitation, Affordable & Clean Energy, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry & Innovation, Inequality, Sustainable Cities, Environment, etc. Our position in this ranking is abysmal. Our best performing district East Khasi Hills District is 57th in the list & the worst performing districts South West Khasi Hills, South Garo Hills and North Garo Hills are 87th, 92nd & 98th in the list. If Development was a Talent Contest, Meghalaya would have been disqualified in the first round itself.

TUR is not surprised by the abysmal failure of Meghalaya in ensuring a decent quality of life for its people because of its various interventions in organising the people around the question of economic & social justice to demand for their rights and assert their autonomy vis-a-vis the corrupt patronage network presided over by Political-Bureaucratic nexus.

The report makes it very clear that the states who do well are the states which have truly democratic grassroots institutions which are accountable, elected & are gender inclusive. In Meghalaya, development administration is hampered by the fact that our villages have no proper democratic & gender inclusive institutions which can & should decide upon development schemes. For far too long Meghalaya lives in a myth of grassroots democracy without actually practising it. TUR believes that till there are true democratic and participatory institutions at the grass roots level, Meghalaya is going to be caught into a vicious cycle of poverty, hunger, unemployment & death. Meghalaya can never have peace without economic justice rooted in rights & democracy.

Lung Myrthong, a 15-year-old student from West Khasi Hills, has been attending classes online since the pandemic brought life to a standstill. Last year, he had told Meghalaya Monitor that internet connectivity in his village near Nongkhnum island is often a problem. His friends in nearby villages are facing the same problem.
Many students like Lung in rural Meghalaya and other parts of the country have been struggling to keep pace with their peers in cities as the regular classroom has shifted to the digital platform. The Covid-19 pandemic has not only prompted this change but also widened the gap between rural and urban India in the education sector.
Recently, the Trained Psychotherapeutic Professionals of Meghalaya (TPPM), an organisation comprising mental health experts, petitioned Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui for a “feasible” system of education in this time of the pandemic. The experts have listed several suggestions, which they have formulated after speaking to all stakeholders, including students and their parents.

Shillong, July 2: The trained psychotherapeutic professionals of Meghalaya have petitioned Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui to address the loopholes in the online education system.

In a statement issued on Friday, the professionals said they had based their findings regarding the online education from their interactions with the stakeholders over the last few months.

“Frontline workers are the most vulnerable right now and as we are in contact with them and guiding them handle their worries and pain, we wish to do more but we cannot do so if our information, especially on workers’ rights and grievance redressal, is limited.”

“Further, we also wish to express that many frontline workers are having difficulties getting transportation due to the lockdown measures and to expect low paid health and other frontline workers to arrange and pay for their own transport to and fro is inhuman as we need them right now to be on their best health and spirits,” it added.

The group of mental health expert suggested to the government that frontline workers, especially those on Covid-19 duty, should be given “high-quality” food.

“There is also a need to have more workers in duty to relieve each other in short shifts as we can understand that wearing the full PPE suit and handling high-risk cases is not an easy task. We owe it to them to ensure that their strength and immunity is not hindered while on duty,” TPPM said.
