Meghalaya has recorded an overall voter turnout of 69.91 percent as of April 19, 2024-06.00 pm in the Lok Sabha Polls 2024. This was informed by the CEO- Mr. BDR Tiwary in a press briefing this evening. The final figures are yet to be compiled and will be made known soon.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today reached the Walbakgre polling station in Tura to cast his vote at 6.30 am. The voting for the first phase of 18th Lok Sabha election has begun in 102 constituencies across India at 7 am. The voting will be held upto 4 pm today.
Speaking to media, Conrad K Sangma Sangma said that he reached the polling station with the hope to cast his vote early but he was pleasantly surprised that people had lined up early to vote. He appealed to people to come out and exercise their democratic rights.

Three labourers attacked at locality in Shillong leaving 1 dead, cabinet Minister/Pynthorumkhrah MLA, AL Hek condemns inhumane act:
Three labourers working at a construction site at Umsohkhlur locality in Mawroh, Shillong were brutally attacked by masked miscreants at around 11:15 AM on Wednesday, leaving one dead.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Rituraj Ravi informed that the labourers were working at an under-construction house at Mawlai Mawroh. Due to the assault, one person identified as Arjun Ray, 52 years old succumbed to his injuries. The SP informed that Ray was severely injured and later passed away at NEIGHRIMS.
In this connection, a case has been registered and investigation is in progress to identify the culprits.
Meanwhile, the deceased was a victim of Nongmynsong locality in Shillong. Local MLA AL Hek strongly condemned the incident and has sought the intervention of the chief minister
Meghalaya's ruling party has distanced itself from the seized cash worth Rs 1 crore in Longding, Arunachal Pradesh. However, opposition parties remain skeptical. The Congress urged the public to "connect the dots" to discern the truth. The cash was seized at the Kanubari checkpost from a vehicle belonging to Harshvardhan Singh, executive director of Badri Rai company, who was following Chief Minister Conrad Sangma's convoy during an election campaign. Youth Congress Vice President Banphiralang Basaiawmoit emphasized the need to scrutinize the situation further.
A massive fire erupted on Saturday evening in Lumshyiap-Chandmari locality, engulfing the area in thick black flames and resulting in significant property loss for the PHE department. While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, it is suspected to have originated from the forest. Lumshyiap locality head, Phira Khongphai, stated that the fire began around 2 pm, possibly initiated by children playing with fire, eventually spreading to the PHE Store where HDPE pipes were stored. The PHE department has suffered an estimated loss of 80-85 lakhs, with numerous HDPE pipes destroyed in the blaze.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Meghalaya to go to polls in first phase on April 19
With the Election Commission of India (ECI) announcing the poll dates for the General Elections to the 18th Lok Sabha on Saturday, the two seats in Meghalaya – Shillong and Tura – will go to the polls in the first phase on April 19. The results will be declared on June 4.
The Shillong seat, with 13,14,036 electorates as per the 2021 data, will witness a tight contest, among the incumbent Vincent H Pala of the Indian National Congress (INC), who is a consecutively three-time winner, former Congress woman, M Ampareen Lyngdoh, now an NPP minister in the ruling dispensation, a former civil society group leader Robertjune Kharjahrin representing a regional party conglomerate consisting of United Democratic Party (UDP) and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP)-coined Regional Democratic Alliance, Dr. Ricky J Syngkon, a college teacher of the infantile Voice of the People’s Party (VPP).
In Tura, where sitting MP Agatha Sangma, a five-times MP and the youngest minister ever to be in the Union government, will face insignificant challenge from the INC’s Saleng Sangma, and a challenger from the BJP. The Tura seat has 10,11,676 electorates as per the 2021 data.

The Garo community, represented by the All Khasi Hills Achik Federation (AKHAF), convened a meeting at Nongspung A to denounce the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) for excluding Garo residents from holding the Rangbah Shnong Post in the Khasi Hills Region.
Over 300 Garo residents attended the meeting, led by AKHAF officials including Serimina D Marak, President of the Ri Bhoi District Women Wing, Sunita Momin, Vice President, and General Secretary Kleden Sangma, along with Central Executive Committee members Cliftus Ch Marak and Manuel Ch Marak.
Serimina D Marak and Manuel Ch Marak criticized the KHADC for proposing a motion to remove Garo residents from the Rangbah Shnong post in Khasi Hills villages. They expressed dismay at the KHADC's actions, stating that it disregarded the sentiments of the Garo people who have peacefully coexisted in the region for centuries. The meeting attendees called for state government intervention, and AKHAF leaders submitted a request to the Chief Minister for involvement.
AKHAF leaders reiterated their demand for the KHADC to withdraw the motion within two weeks. Failure to do so would prompt AKHAF to take further action on the matter.
The Ri-Bhoi District Police has arrested another 4 persons who were suspected involved in the recent IED bomb blast that occurred at Them Motor, in East Khasi Hills district Shillong. Police arrested these four person from Umsning areas on Monday night.
Meanwhile, in a joint operation, the EKH DEF and Ri Choi DEF, Meghalaya Police foiled the bid of a proscribed HNLC to explode another IED on March 11, 2024.
