'After a time, deep in this place I found scenes I seemed to recognise, memories I seemed to own. It was a city and something more, a garden perhaps, or another realm. No matter how far I walked, the paths and the byways never seemed to end. What was I looking for? I knew only that I was looking.'

Ascension is Matthew Smith’s first Book. It received an Honourable Mention at the Lucie International Photo Awards 2020.

Featuring photographs taken in London, Venice and Tokyo, Ascension explores the hidden territory of the mind and the heart, through the outer world of a hybrid cityscape. Taken during a time of deep instability in Matthew’s life, which included the death of his first wife, the photographs reflect an inner journey that he needed to complete, through fear and grief, to find lasting courage and clarity of mind.

This book is about an inward journey into deeper, darker places of the mind-palace unfurled.
Matthew Smith’s first photobook, Ascension, presents a constellation of moments, captured during daily wanderings in London during lockdown, mixed with those from earlier travels in Los Angeles, Tokyo and Venice. In the maze of reminiscence, all metropolitan cities merge into one quiet space in your hand.

- Photographer Soumya Sankar Bose remembers how Jatra, a style of folk theater, was popular during his childhood in West Bengal. But 10 years after moving out, Bose returned home to find that Jatra was no longer celebrated nearly as much. The genre's brightest stars, once major celebrities, were fading from view. Even his own uncle, a famous Jatra performer, had to take a job at a train station to make ends meet.

Jatra originated in Bangladesh and the eastern Indian states of Odisha and Bihar. It's a living and vibrant form of theater, usually performed on open-air stages, inspired by Hindu mythology, popular legends and contemporary events.

Soumya Sankar Bose began photographing artistes who are now unemployed but were once gigantic figures of the Jatra, a folk theatre form in India. This work is based mainly on the Jatra artists, characters played by them and the psychology that drives them to be a part of this folk cult form.
Dating back to the 16th century, the Jatra is a famous folk theatre form of united Bengal(Bangladesh and West Bengal), employing dialogue, monologue, songs and instrumental music to tell stories .Jatra pala ,as the plays are called ,are enacted on wooden stages without any barriers between the actors and the audience, facilitating direct communication. The plots vary from India mythology and historical incidents to something more contemporary and based on social issues. The partition of India had a major impact on Jatra as artistes in the newly formed East-Pakistan (later Bangladesh), a Muslim majority country, discontinued to enact Hindu religious folktales such as Krishna lila ,Devi thakurani, kongso bodh, kaliadaman etc. On the other side of the border, artistes in west bengal stopped playing Muslim characters such as Siraj-ud-dullah,Shah jahan, Akbar etc. The advent of cinema and TV in the 60s and 70s blew a deadly blow to the theatre art form. In 2013 , over 600 Jatra companies employed over 2,00,000 people but their situation has come to force them to often offer free performances.

Soumya Sankar Bose, Where The Birds Never Sing at Experimenter – Ballygunge Place. Opens April 21 – June 30.

Soumya Sankar Bose’s Where the Birds Never Sing is a body of work about the Marichjhapi massacre, the forcible eviction in 1979 of Bengali refugees on Marichjhapi Island in Sundarbans, West Bengal, and the subsequent death of thousands by police gunfire, starvation, and disease.
Bose, over the last few years, has been researching and re-enacting memories of the survivors in specific locations, as there is almost no written record of the incident. Through the intricate weaving of fact and fiction of existing oral histories of the real survivors, he brings to light several perspectives of the same narrative, forming a cryptic framework of this problematic history that is facing a slow erasure from memory.

These four photobooks are as different as the artists who made them. Each grapples with urgent contemporary issues—from the suppression of inconvenient truths to the blind spots of Western feminism, from migration and citizenship to incarceration and representation—wrestling them into photobooks that honor the complexity and gravity of their subjects without neglecting the distinctive tactile and visual pleasures of the form.

Soumya Sankar Bose’s book Where the Birds Never Sing is a riveting story told in fits and starts, gathering together a series of images, documents, and textual commentary to address the 1979 massacre of Bengali refugees on Marichjhapi Island in Sundarban, West Bengal. Soumya Sankar Bose has worked with survivors of this traumatic event to recall and, at times, reenact memories of their survival for his camera

The book is a medium where the photographer should be able to reproduce the emotion in their work appropriately. However, the book is also a medium that propels the work of the photographer by adding a new dimension - tangibility. More often than not, certain limitations, as well as unique abilities of the print process, create desirable difference to the art work that the photographer may have been initially unaware of. This is where the print itself, becomes the artwork, superseding the original idea as a mere input.

Where the Birds Never Sing is a riveting story told in fits and starts, gathering together a series of images, documents, and textual commentary to address the 1979 massacre of Bengali refugees on Marichjhapi Island in Sundarban, West Bengal. Soumya Sankar Bose has worked with survivors of this traumatic event to recall and, at times, reenact memories of their survival for his camera. Their stories and the resulting images are buttressed by a number of small-scale facsimiles of various governmental reports tipped into the pages of the book—rare fragments of documentation that have survived an effort to destroy official evidence of the incident, one of the many violent repercussions that continue to follow, decades later, in the wake of Indian independence and partition. The results, per Martin, form a “strong example of book making in the subjective documentary mode.”

Soumya Sankar Bose’s Where the Birds Never Sing is a body of work on the Marichjhapi massacre. It traces the forcible eviction in 1979 of lower caste Bengali refugees on Marichjhapi Island in Sundarban, West Bengal, India, and the subsequent death of thousands by police gunfire, starvation, and disease.

Over the last three years, Bose has been researching and re-enacting some memories of the survivors in specific locations, as there is very little written record of the incident. Through the intricate weaving of existing oral histories, he brings to light several perspectives of the same narrative, forming a cryptic framework of this problematic history that is facing slow erasure from people’s memory.

Edie Peters says: “With historical documents, re-enactment photographs as subtle as portentous, and well-chosen quotes from oral history accounts, Soumya Sankar Bose tells the story of an almost forgotten massacre. He proves you can show an event without having been there, thus expanding the power of photography. Storytelling at its best: relevant subject, good photography, magnetic attention span, and perfect text-photos ratio.”

Soumya Sankar Bose is an Indian documentary photographer. In his practice he uses photography, archival material, text and film to explore desire, identity and memory. He was one of World Press Photo’s 2019 Joop Swart Masterclass participants.
