'I saw them kill my husband': Widow of Christian killed for his faith in India flees village
Relatives of Christians were barred from attending the village festival, leading to murder.

The young widow of a Christian in India’s Chhattisgarh state who was killed for his faith is living in fear a month after she fled for her life.

“I saw them kill my husband right before my eyes,” said Jime Kawasi, whose husband, 22-year-old Kosa Kawasi, was slain in Bastar District on May 4. “I was assaulted, but somehow I managed to escape. I still fear that my husband’s killers will find me and kill me.”

Fleeing Kapanar village, in Darbha block, she took refuge in a house far from the murder site. The five other Christian families in the village, unable to find her, fled the same day, including elderly parents and young children.

Relatives furious with Kosa Kawasi killed him after villagers forbade any families with Christian members to participate in tribal festival offerings to local gods, sources said.

A mob of about 20 villagers, including Kosa Kawasi’s uncle, Dasru Kawasi, and cousin, Madiya Kawasi, went to his house at 10 a.m. and began to argue with him, telling him to renounce Christ, said area Christian leader Santosh Mandavi. When Kosa Kawasi refused, they began to assault him and his wife, he said.

“They hit the couple with wooden sticks, kicked them with legs and fists,” Mandavi said. When Kawasi persisted in his faith, “his uncle and cousin stabbed Kosa with the knife thrice in his stomach.”

Sangai International University Manipur Removed From UGC List Of Institutions

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released an advisory for prospective students and parents informing them that Sangai International University, Churachandpur, Manipur has been removed from the UGC list of universities.

The students have been directed not to take admission in any of the programme offered by the Sangai University, Manipur as it has been prohibited from offering any UGC specified degree of undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD level.

An official notification from the university body reads, "Sangai International University, Churachandpur, Manipur has been removed from the UGC list of universities under Section 2(f) of UGC Act, 1956. The university cannot offer any UGC specified degree of Undergraduate, Postgraduate level including PhD."

The notification further highlighted that the Sangai International University, Churachandpur, Manipur was established by the Government of Manipur as a State Private University. Therefore, the name of university was enlisted in the UGC list of universities in June, 2015.

"The University was requested to provide the information required for inspection vide UGC letters. In spite of repeated written communications, the university has failed to submit the required information. Therefore, UGC issued a show cause notice vide F. No. 8-19/2015 (CPP-I/PU) dated 19.12.2023. The university was given an opportunity to show cause as to why action against the university be not taken by the UGC to remove its name from the list of universities as maintained by the UGC under Section 2(1) of the UGC Act, 1956," the notification added.

A copy of show cause notice was also sent to the Department of Higher Education, Government of Manipur with the request to take immediate action and send its comments, UGC said. It added it has not received any reply from the university and the comments from the Government of Manipur have also not been received.

CONSULTATIVE RESOLUTIONS

1. The August house after comprehensive consideration and patient study on the issues of parallel
existence of Zeliangrong Apex Body have in one accord decided to re-unify in fulfilling the desire
interest of Zeliangrong Community. Thus, this house has unanimously agreed to amalgamate
Zeliangrong Union (ZU) and Zeliangrong Baudi (ZB) into a single apex organization encompassing
Zeliangrong People of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland.

2. It is agreed that ZU and ZB will support each other and work together until a new unified body is
constituted.
Further, resolved to set up an interim arrangement and the task is entrusted to ZU (AMN) ZB (AMN)
precedents to work out at the earliest. They are to constitute an interim committee with the
following designation and members as:-
I. Convener
II. Co-Convener
III. Member secy
IV. Ex Officio member – President ZB(AMN)
V. Ex Officio Member – President ZU (AMN)
