TDC Exclusive: Oatmeal House by Compartment S4

Envisioning this 1400 sq ft home in Ahmedabad as a subtle blend of clean aesthetics and functionality required deliberate design gestures with a modern interpretation of craftsmanship, while accentuating certain elements through colors and textures. The idea of materiality as a unifying yet distinctive feature for each space translated into the use of warm materials like cane and wood, seamlessly flowing in and out of the rooms.

Upon entering the light-filled apartment, the foyer smoothly transitions into a family room, with hints of lavender geometric patterns connecting the two spaces. Adhering to the functional aesthetic, a sliding ensemble of teak and cane gradually reveals a formal living space behind it. This flexible living area can convert into an extra bedroom, with the sofa doubling as a bed when needed. This small design choice effectively adds 200 sq ft of usable space beyond the existing layout.

TDC Specials: The Loom by Portal 92

Situated within what was once a nondescript space, ‘TheLoom’ by Portal 92 emerges as a spatial synthesis where architectural elements weave together like threads on a weaver’s loom, artfully crafting the guest experience. Addressing the challenge of imbuing spatial depth into an enclosed environment, The Loom’s design ethos centers on the concept of layering—both physical and conceptual. Similar to a weaver meticulously intertwining threads to create a tapestry, the architectural elements within ‘The Loom’ intersect and interlace, creating an immersive spatial experience.

The first layer offsets the base volume with a stone-aggregate finish that echoes the tactile rawness of Khadi fabric. Its undulating curves and textured surface envelop the space, forming pockets of intimacy and enclosure. Combined with the pixelated seamless flooring, it establishes a sense of continuity. Above this foundational layer, a wooden cove emerges, resembling the harness of a loom. Its warm tones contrast the rugged texture of the stone-aggregate finish and extend along the length of the space, anchoring the overall tonal palette.
