I wanted to learn Data Science and Machine Learning but had no idea where to begin. I discovered IIITB & UpGrad's Data Science Certification course.
The programme structure is very straightforward. The programme is divided into Courses, and each Course has Modules, which are further subdivided into Sessions. Each of these sessions consists of a series of theory/practical videos followed by Graded Questions. The modules are due every week.
UpGrad also has a dedicated 'Discussion Forum' where students can answer their questions/concerns, which are then answered by other students or UpGrad Teaching Assistants. Your level of participation in these discussions also influences your final grade. UpGrad also does an excellent job of connecting all students. We have a dedicated Whatsapp group where we communicate with students from other colleges.
The course is entirely online, and live sessions, while infrequent, are scheduled whenever possible.
The programme is split into three sections:
1.Preparatory Content
2. Statistics Fundamentals
3.Machine learning
The course begins by teaching the Data Science Frameworks, Python Fundamentals, and all of the Data Science Modules. Python, R, or both are available. We work on Assignments and Case Studies in every course.
All of the data provided is real-time data, giving you a clear picture of what is going on in the industry. After one month, we move on to statistics, where we learn all of the EDA, Inferential Statistics, and Hypothesis Testing required for Data Science. Linear regression, logistic regression, and a few unsupervised learning techniques are covered in the Machine learning section. In each section, there is additional content that explains a few industry-specific concepts and provides in-depth information about them.
We also have a Student Mentor who we can contact for any non-technical issues that arise; he or she also reminds and pushes you when the deadline approaches (needed sometimes).
There are two offline mock interviews, one after three months and the other after five months. This will make it easier to apply and confidently attend interviews.
To summarise, the course is a good starting point for learning all of the fundamentals needed to progress. I would recommend this to any undergraduate who wants to learn data science but is unsure how to get started.
