Late Padam Gurung death case ,Finally, the Jain Committee reported on Padam Gurung’s strange death. The study states the death was accidental. His family’s wait is over. Unfortunately, this was not what the bereaved family wanted after this protracted research. All circumstantial evidence, audio and video records of certain eyewitnesses, and reasoning imply Padam Gurung could not have died in the 1.5-foot sewer. His family and friends will never accept such a ridiculous assertion.
The government closed the investigation as a “accidental death,” but too many doubts remain. As a public appeasement, two police officers were suspended. Why were they not suspended during the police inquiry if they committed such lapses? Why now? What about the victim’s relatives and friends’ press conferences alleging police coercion to change their statement? Was coercion necessary if it was an accidental death?
Government policy generates many questions. The Chief Minister formed a one-man committee led by retired Justice NK Jain on the day the Padam Gurung SIT reported. This was an eyewash to delay the probe for a few months until public fury faded. Before the police could finish investigating, the case was handed over to a SIT, then the Jain Committee. The Jain Committee’s findings are known, but what about the police investigation?
What did SIT find?
There were CCTV footage tampering concerns. How did the Jain Committee discover and authenticate video file tampering? The Padam Gurung death inquiry relied on those videos, which must be preserved.
Many unresolved questions are hopeless under the current system. Padam Gurung and his family lost a promising young life, yet the government has handled this matter poorly to avoid criticism. How and who committed the murder? The government is accountable for these questions. For Padam Gurung’s death and unjust treatment, the government is responsible.
Justice must be done as nature dictates. Padam Gurung’s family, friends, and Sikkimese must keep hope. According to the phrase, कानूनको हामो हुन्छ। दाम्लो मकिन्छ मामलो मकिन्दैन। Sikkim’s law-abiding, democratic citizens must not despair. Murderers of Padam Gurung will be punished. This is certain. In the face of such obvious injustice, Sikkimese should unite. I pray for Late Padam Gurung and support his family. I support them in this difficult moment. People of Sikkim support them.
