The Executive Committee meeting of Sikkimey Nagarik Samaj was held today in Gangtok to deliberate on the various issues plaguing Sikkimese society.

Among many issues raised during the meeting, the drinking water scarcity in and around Gangtok and also in other places was the major agenda for discussion. It is sad to learn that the drinking water meant for local population is diverted to the private construction projects 24x7, which is the main cause of erratic supply of drinking water to the households.

As such, we request state government and concern department to immediately stop the illegal water supply to private construction projects and provide adequate drinking water to the residents/households.

In addition to it, meeting discussed the resignation of Sunil Saroagi from the post of OSD to Chief Minister. In a major embarrassment to the SKM Government, the illegal appointment of Sunil Sarogi was exposed after a case was filed in the Hon’ble High Court of Sikkim. Sikkim Nagarik Samaj has time and again apprised the state government about the illegal appointment of Sunil Saraogi. Once again Sikkimey Nagarik Samaj urges state government to immediately remove Sunil Saraogi from the post of Chairman, Teesta Urja Limited, Managing Director, Sikkim Power Investment Corporation Limited and Vice Chairman, Sikkim Reform and Development Board to save themselves from further embarrassment.

PM Modi inaugurated the new parliament building amid a boycott by opposition parties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new parliament building on 28, May 2023 amid a boycott by opposition parties, which insisted President Droupadi Murmu should do the honours. The PM unveiled a plaque marking the inauguration.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang along with Lok Sabha MP Indrahang S***a attended the inauguration of new Parliament House in New Delhi.
On his page the CM wrote “It is an honour and a privilege for me to attend the historic inauguration ceremony of the new building of the Indian Parliament by the Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji.

As a physical manifestation of the pillars of democracy, the new parliament building serves as a symbol of unity, representation, and the collective will of the people. It is a momentous day for our great nation, signifying the birth of a new era of democracy”.

RBI withdraws Rs.2000 banknotes immediately

In a press release the Reserve Bank of India has instructed all banks to stop immediately issuing Rs.2000 denominations banknotes.

India’s central back and regulatory body responsible for regulation of the Indian banking system has encouraged time until September 30 to either deposit and/or exchange the Rs.2000 banknotes as it will be withdrawing the notes from circulation.

“A document on Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) in the matter has been hosted on the RBI website for information and convenience of the public,” said RBI Chief General Manager Yogesh Dayal in the press statement.

*AVALANCHE HITS EAST SIKKIM: RSCUE MISSION BY INDIAN ARMY, STATE DISASTER MANAGEMENT TEAM AND POLICE UNDERWAY*

On 04 Apr 23 at about 11.10 AM, a massive avalanche hit the Gangtok-Natu La JNM Road near MS 15. Approximately 5-6 vehicles along with 20-30 tourists on way to Natu La are feared to have been buried under the snow. Troops of Trishakti Corps, Indian Army and team of BRO Project SWASTIK swung into action immediately and launched an all-out rescue mission.

23 tourists rescued till 4 PM including 6 from deep valley and shifted to nearby medical facilities of Indian Army. Unfortunately, seven persons have succumbed. Search and rescue mission for the balance persons are underway by the Army, State Disaster Management Team and Police. In addition, 350 stranded tourists and 80 vehicles rescued after snow clearance from road.

This is the preliminary info. Figures may change over a period of time as rescue operations continue and when more clarity emerges.

This is Bomman and Bellie, the stars of the Oscar-winning documentary “The Elephant Whisperers”. They were seen holding the coveted trophy for the first time after the documentary, featuring their lives, created history at the Academy Awards this year. Director Kartiki Gonsalves shared this photo, saying that Bomman and Bellie were the first people to watch the documentary at a special screening organised by her. They live in a remote forest area and do not have access to television. The documentary won an Oscar in the Best Documentary Short Subject category on March 13. 🐘🙌

Union Finance Minister on a 4-day visit to Sikkim
BJP Sikkim meets Nirmala Sitharaman to discuss state's financial constraints, unemployment problems
Sikkim state BJP president Shri DR Thapa along with BJP MLAs, party executives and karyakartas met Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman at Rangpo on 27, February 2023. The Union Finance Minister is on a four day visit to the state. Mr Thapa raised some important financial issues before the Finance Minister.
He stated that the State has financial constraints and people of all works of life are facing difficulties in all the sectors. Considering the facts, he requested for one time financial package to address the financial constraints of the State.
He also submitted that the state has serious issues of rising number of educated unemployed and necessary steps to be taken to address the unemployment problem of the state. He suggested that the direction may be given to all the banks to provide small business loans without collateral in easy manner to promote self- employment in the state.
Shri ST Venchungpa, MLA requested for the further extension of North East Industrial Investment and Promotion Policy (NEIIPP) to address the unemployment problem in the state as well as in the NE region.
The Union Finance Minister gave patient hearing to the party delegates while discussing the important issues, added the press release and further said that BJP Sikkim is very optimistic that the visit of Finance Minister to Sikkim will resolve the pertaining issues of the state in the larger interest of the people of Sikkim.

Citizen Action Party- Sikkkm on 9th February 2023 called upon various leaders and concerned authorities appraising number of issues pertaining to Sikkim. The most urgent was about the recent infamous judgement of the Supreme Court wherein the definition of the term "Sikkimese" defined under Section 10 (26 AAA) has been struck down. Other equally important issues highlighted by Citizen Action Party - Sikkim today was with regard to long pending Limboo Tamang seat in the Sikkim State Legislative Assembly, Restoration of Nepali Seat in the State Legislative Assembly and Tribalship recognition to 12 left out communities of Sikkim to be pursued and solved sooner.

The recipients of memorandum included various National Party leaders such as Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), Indian National Congres, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Comminist Party of India (M), Comminist Party of India, Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD), Janta Dal (U). Citizen Action Party- Sikkim was assured by the leaders that their parties shall pursue these matters from their party level. Memorandum was also submitted in the Ministry of Home Affairs. Citizen Action Party will reach Prime Minister's Office on 10th February 2023 to apprise about the matters aforementioned.

Citizen Action Party has been on one day dharna at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. We are joined by many concerned Sikkimese Citizens who are presently working in and around Delhi. A good number of students from Sikkim studying in Delhi and surroundings also joined our dharna. The dharna was successfully concluded and was able to highlight issues pertaining to Sikkim on a national level. It is for the first time that leaders addressed in Lepcha, Limboo, Bhutia, Hindi and Nepali languages at the National Capital. The coverage of the dharna was broadcasted on national media as well as local media from Sikkim.

Huge crowd greets Chief Minister on his arrival at Rangpo

Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang, received a grand welcome following his return from New Delhi, at Rangpo on 9, February 2023.
The reception programme was organized for historic achievement of the state as the Hon’ble Apex Court deleted all the references to Nepali of Sikkimese origin as foreigners and/or migrants in its Judgment dt. 13-01-2023. It also clarified that the Judgment did not touch upon Article 371F of the Constitution of India which grants special status to Sikkim.
