“Phurba Doma Lepcha is a professional tattoo, digital illustrator and painter. Her art is based on a fusion of caricature and traditional artwork. She has been tattooing professionally for 7 years, she has attended worldwide tattoo conventions such as the Nepal International Tattoo Conventions and Heart Work Tattoo Conventions (Indian International Tattoo Conventions).”

“Ms Smita Rai, known as the ‘Candle Lady’ of Namchi, South Sikkim, is the founder and leader of ‘Namchi Designer Candles’. This initiative engages women aged between 20 and 50 years, including homemakers and unmarried women involved in various home based activities. Additionally, Ms Rai runs ‘Flavours Restaurant’ in Namchi, employing 10 individuals from rural Sikkim.”

“Smt. Anu Pradhan holds the title of the first Miss Sikkim, achieved this title in 1999. She completed her schooling at Deorali Senior Secondary Girls School and graduated from Sikkim Government College, Tadong. She has been working for 14 years as a Yoga instructor and Dance Teacher. Proficient in Bharatnatyam and Bollywood dance forms, she received formal dance education at the Shiamak Davar Academy in Delhi.”

“Ms. Tshela Lizum Lepcha is a well – known entrepreneur in the state of Sikkim who hails from Khamdong. She deeply committed herself to promoting ethnic clothing as her individual quest of showing the world who the Lepchas are.”

“Ms. Karma Choden Bhutia started her entrepreneurship career by selling and supplying cosmetic items to beauty parlours and shops for a small amount. She dedicated herself to the business, working tirelessly for up to 20 hours a day. Recognizing her outstanding entrepreneurship and significant contributions to Sikkimese society, she was honoured with a prestigious award presented by the Governor of Sikkim.“

1. Ms. Phurki Lhamu Bhutia is also the National Football Referee hailing from Sikkim & resident of Bhusuk 10th mile, Naitam East Sikkim. She started her career as a Football Referee in 2012.

2. Anjali Pradhan is a well-known singer of Sikkim, born on 27th July 1967 in Gangtok. She is the daughter of Shri. L.B Pradhan & Smt. Lt. Bishnu Maya Pradhan

3.Remanti Rai is an Indian singer by profession from Sikkim & she is also the founder of Remanti Sangeet Academy. Music was her passion from a young age & she always dreamed of making her career in music field.

4. Tenzing Ongmu Bhutia, commonly known as Aie Tenzing Ongmu is a Bhuta nightingale whose voice is appreciated in the Bhutia community.

D8: Celebrating Women’s History month with “Portraits of Inspiration: First Women Achievers of Sikkim” by Professor Yodita Bhutia and Ms. Roshna Pradhan. 📚

1. Manita Pradhan has become the third woman from Sikkim to scale Mt. Everest, the highest peak in the world. She is also the first Sikkimese woman to scale Mt. Everest at it's new designated height of 8848.86meters.

2. Kikam Bhutia is the only woman cricketer from the entire North East region of the country to be appointed as fielding coach for Zonal Cricket Academy by National Cricket Academy under the aegis of BCCI in 2018.

3. Nima Doma Bhutia is the first woman basketball player from the North -Eastern region to play for the Indian national team. She hails from Tashiding, West Sikkim & is a product of Eklavya Residential Model School (EMRS), Gangyap near Tashiding.

4. Reshme Chettri is the National Football Refree representing Sikkim, born on 25th June 1993 & a resident of Pangthang Nursery, Gangtok East Sikkim. She is the daughter of M.B. Chettri & Pushpa Chettri.

Dr. Doma T Bhutia is the first woman Additional Advocate General in Sikkim. She completed her Ph.D in Law from Mumbai University & over 20 years of litigation experience.

Smt. Phulmaya Tamang is the first woman Everester from Sikkim, a trailblazer in mountaineering. Her journey began in 1991 as a National Service Scheme Volunteer, excelling in the Basic Mountaineering Course at SGMI.

Smt. Pushpa Chettri is the first international woman Footballer from Sikkim.She was born on 19th November 1972, the daughter of the late Shri Chandra Bahadur Chettri & the late Smt Ran Maya Gurung.

Smt. Sushmita Rai is the first woman from Sikkim to win international medals in kickbox.Born on 12th March 1991, Tikjuk, West Sikkim, she is the daughter of Shri. Harka Bahadur Rai & Smt. Raj Maya Rai.

“Late. Smt. Gita Sharma was the first woman writer in Sikkim. She was well-known as an educationist & writer. From 1968 to 1970, she held the post of Headmistress at Pranami Girls High School, Kalimpong & West Bengal.”

“Smt. Ongmu Bhutia is a Superintendent of Police in Sikkim & hails from Tadong. She joined her service as Sub Inspector in the Sikkim Police in 1984 and after completing her one-year training from Phillaur (Punjab), she was posted in different police station.”

“Smt. Sharda Rani Lepcha is the Inspector General of Police in Sikkim & was born on 19th August 1961,Gangtok. She started her career as a Deputy Superintendent of police through SPSC on 25th March 1989.”

“Judge Meenakshi Madan Rai is the first woman judge of the Sikkim High Court. She was appointed as Judicial Magistrate 1st Class -cum-Civil Judge (East) District at Gangtok on 11.12.1990 in the cadre of Sikkim Judicial Service.”

Her illustration career spans various levels of the educational spectrum, including schools, colleges & the university within the state.”

“Dr. Chukey Bhutia is the first woman Assistant Professor & also the first Ph.D holder in Hindi from Sikkim. Her areas of specialization in the folk literature of the Bhutia community, feminist studies & the status of Hindi in the North East.”

“Prof. Pushpa Sharma is the first woman Professor in Nepali, Sikkim University. Her areas of specialisation are criticism, women’s studies & folklore studies.”

“Ms. Pushpa Choden Thomas Lepcha is the first woman Lecturer in Lepcha from Sikkim & also the first woman Lecturer in the Department of Lepcha, NBBDC. She is the founder member in upgrading Lepcha subjects from MIL to general, honours & M.A courses.”

“Smt. Asha Gurung is the first woman Assistant Engineer & Chief Engineer in Sikkim. Over the past 30 years, she has served as a Civil Engineer with the post of Assistant Engineer in various government departments in Sikkim.”

“Smt. Kiden Denjongpa basically hails from Shotak, East Sikkim & holds the distinction of being the first Bhutia woman to host a radio programme in the Bhutia language. As a respected member of All India Radio, Gangtok, she has made significant contributions to the promotion & preservation of the Bhutia language.”

“Dr. Pushpa Tamang is the first woman to hold a Ph.D. degree in Science from Sikkim and hails from Singling, Soreng, West Sikkim. She completed her High School education in the year 1974 at Girls High School, Darjeeling, West Bengal Board of Secondary Education.”

“Ms Aparajita Rai (IPS) is the first woman IPS (Indian Police Service) officer from Sikkim, she has emerged as a beacon of inspiration & empowerment. Joining the IPS in 2013 batch as Deputy Commissioner of Police, she has since been serving diligently in West Bengal, specifically in Hooghly.”

“Late Mrs Dr. Laki Dadul holds a distinguished place in Sikkim’s history as the first woman doctor, a torch bearer in the medical field in 1955. Her immense contributions to healthcare were marked by deep compassion & diligent work ethic.”

“Ms Tseten Nordan Cargyal is the first woman IFS officer from Sikkim. She did her training at LBSNAA, Mussoorie from September 2012 to December 2012, attended the Foundation Course at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration.“

“Dr. Pushpa Kala Rai holds the distinction of being the state’s first woman veterinary doctor. Her professional career began in August 1986 at the Government Veterinary Hospital in Gangtok. This initial role laid the groundwork for her future contributions to veterinary medicine.”

“Padmashree Ms.Keepu Tsering Lepcha, the first woman in Sikkim to receive the Padma Shree award from the President of India. She is not only an educator but also a social worker, former civil servant, founder of the Human Development Foundation of Sikkim & former Additional Secretary of the Government of Sikkim.”

“Padmashree Ms. Droupadi Ghimiray, the second woman of Sikkim to be honoured with the Padma Shree Award. She is known for her role as a Social Worker & as the Founder of Sikkim Viklang Sahayata Samiti.”

“Smt. Sandhya Gurung is the first Dronacharya Awardee Woman of Sikkim. She is a former boxer from Sikkim, who fought paralysis to become an international level boxer. She serves as a coach & is credited with nurturing one of the most promising talents in Indian boxing history.”

“Late. Smt Hemlata Chhetri was the first woman member of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly. In 1974, she contested from Geyzing Constituency from the Sikkim Congress Party & became the first elected women legislator in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly.”
