"Quality Education implies bringing out the spirit of human existence and the world. It develops our purpose of existence, our spiritual dimension, and the significance of each one for the lives of others. It concerns us, our relations, and the world - i.e. life. Therefore, it needs to be "on time" and should correspond to the future and vision: "Where are we going? What do we want to achieve? What kind of people are we preparing? And in what sort of world?”.
The Chief Minister has embarked on a transformative journey to uplift educational facilities in the state, initiating extended reforms, investing in infrastructure, and fostering innovation in teaching methods. This commitment aims at ensuring impartial access to quality education, empowering scholars for a brighter future.
Under the visionary leadership of Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh tamang golay, significant investments have been directed towards upgrading and modernizing educational infrastructure. Universities and Schools are equipped with modern technological tools, ensuring that students have access to the latest educational resources and are prepared for the digital era.
No Chief Minister, having accepted higher education as crucial, has pushed as hard as Shri. Prem Singh Tamang Golay to improve its efficacy, from the belief that something so valuable like quality education should deliver on its promises.
* Sikkim is the foremost state in the country to launch the rural management curriculum for bachelor's and master's degrees in
affiliation with MGNCRE under MoE, GoI.
* Six new private universities have been established-
--Kanchendzonga Buddhist University;
--Sikkim Alpine University, Kamrang;
--Sikkim International University;
--Medhavi Skills University, Bermoik;
--Sikkim Skill University;
--Capital University.
* The Netaji Subash Chandra Bose University of Excellence has been established at Chakung and the long pending transfer of land at Khamdong to NIT Khamdong has been completed.
The state government believes that
curriculums hold a prominent niche when striving to facilitate innovation in education, as it contemplate the idea of education by indicating knowledge, skills, and values to be taught to students.
Innovation that marks the overall competitive advantage that the state of Sikkim holds regarding the education system and the SKM government manifests its vision in prior means, i.e;
* New textbooks for primary level (Classes I-V) developed for English, EVS, and Mathematics in collaboration with Azim Premji University, Bengaluru, and MGIEP-UNESCO during 2018-2019 and
2019-2020.
To nurture excellence and enhance the overall quality of instruction, mentorship, and standard of education, the Hon'ble Chief Minister has prioritized the recruitment of qualified, dedicated, and experienced educators and is providing continuous professional development opportunities.
* The SKM Government took a bold policy decision to come up with a policy of regularization of ad-hoc teachers thereby providing them with job security. The Sikkim Adhoc Teachers Regularisation Policy, 2021 has now been notified and services of 553 probationary teachers are being regularised. This year, more than
2700 probationary teachers have been recruited under this policy.
* As part of its capacity-building program, SCERT-Sikkim has been organizing the Annual Teacher Educators’ Conference to facilitate all the teacher educators of Sikkim to come together and present their
research studies on one platform.
* NISHTHA (National Initiative for School Heads' and Teachers' Holistic
Advancement) has been under implementation - NISHTHA 1.0 was
conducted for elementary teachers which included primary and graduate teachers including school heads in the year 2019-2020. Together 66 state resource persons were trained by NCERT and they in
turn conducted training for around 8000 teachers of Sikkim in face-to-face mode.
Understanding the financial constraints that some families may face, the chief minister has initiated scholarship programs and financial aid to support credible students. This inclusive approach aims to ensure that every child, regardless of economic background, has the opportunity to pursue quality education.
*The State Government has increased the number of state quota MBBS seats in SMIMS from 50 to 80 (50 free seats and 30 paid seats exclusively for students of Sikkim).
* 2. 5% of seats are reserved for PwD candidates in State quota seats in
Government pharmacy and nursing colleges.
* The Chief Minister’s Internship Scheme has been recently launched. 100 fresh College/University Graduates will be attached to various departments/PSUs under the scheme.
* The Nar Bahadur Fellowship scheme, in which two students who secure admission to a master's degree program abroad in any of the top 20 Universities of the World (Ranked by QS) will get financial aid of up to Rs. 50 lakh each, has been launched.
* A scheme for financial assistance for language scholars, called the AAPATAN Scholarship Scheme has been launched. Here financial assistance will be given to scholars pursuing PhD. program in
Hindi and local languages.
* 50 Young aspirants for the UPSC are being provided scholarships under the Chief Minister’s Civil Service Coaching Scheme.
The Hon'ble Chief Minister believes in Collective and collaborative effort. He has time and again been actively committed with the community, seeking intake and involving residents in decision-making processes corresponding to educational growth and expansion.
To involve the community and augment the resources the education department has involved many NGOs and private-sector entities with CSR mandate.
An Act for establishing the State Board of Indigenous Languages of Sikkim was passed by the State Legislative Assembly on 3rd April 2022. Bhujel language has been introduced in the school curriculum from the academic session 2022.
