Gangtok Traffic Woes
The objective of every commuters travelling by cars or by public buses is to reach their destination well in time. However, when cars and buses share the same road the end result is traffic congestion. In big city’s you have separate lane dedicated to public buses, but unfortunately that is not possible in the hills because of the obvious reasons. The bottlenecks in the road and the sheer volume of vehicles during peak hours makes it impossible to regulate smooth flow of traffic in and around Gangtok . If we see the state wise percentage of households that own a car in each state of India, Sikkim surprisingly stands 5th with 20.9% which is pretty high. The statistics makes you understand much clearly the reasons behind the traffic congestion’s, of course on the positive note the data definitely indicates that we are a progressive state too. So now what options do we have other than imposing odd- even restrictions. The answer is non.
Lately the debate around the Tinseltown is “ why private vehicles only, why not government vehicles.” A valid point as the government vehicles are equally responsible for the traffic congestion’s especially during the peak hours. The question then arises as to how do we effectively regulate the movement of government vehicles ? What if departments could split its workforce into morning and evening shift. In fact there are many departments who are not directly concerned with the public, such departments could take the evening shifts. Given a choice I am sure many employees who would prefer the evening shifts, especially those who are used to late nights for them the early morning rush to reach office in time will no longer be an issue.
The best part is you can hit the bar straight after office hours. Honestly if we have to promote tourism seriously then we not only need to address the traffic issues but most importantly we need to make Gangtok city lively during the night. You cannot shutdown everything by 8pm and leave the tourist high and dry wondering what next to do. MG Marg should be booming with activities street foods, bars, restaurants, pubs, street shows till late in the night. One needs to understand why cities like Bangkok, Tokyo ,Seoul etc are the most sought after destinations. This move will not only have the desired impact in the day time traffic but will encourage many to work late hours. I adore hardworking progressive and creative people and I also know many would think its a radical idea but sometimes you got to think out of the box.
