Clashes in Namchi, South Sikkim, after a peace rally organized by the All Sikkim Gurung (TAMU) Buddhist Association turned violent
The rally was held demanding probe in the Namchi Government College Students' Representative Council President Padam Gurung case, who had passed away 40 days earlier.
During the rally, participants displayed placards with photos of police officers from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing Padam Gurung's death. A clash occurred when a police officer attempted to snatch one of the placards, leading to altercations between the rally participants and the police.
Stones and bottles were hurled at the police, resulting in injuries to protesters along with 3 Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) jawans, 2 SDMs, and 1 Sikkim police officer.
The Namchi Administration imposed Section 144 of CrPC in Namchi's Central Park and its 200-meter premises to control the crowd.
As of now, there has been no official statement from the Sikkim Police regarding the incident.
Prakash parajuli, spokesperson, Citizen Action Party - Sikkim and Anuraj Chettri have been detained by the police.
