“Marrying the Hangman” appears in Margaret Atwood’s collection of poetry, Two-Headed Poems. This historical poem is about two French prisoners at Québec of the 1750s, Jean Cololère and Françoise Laurent. The former took up the profession of an executioner and the latter married him in order to save themselves from the death sentence. This unconventional love story is discussed in the poem. Atwood provides a better insight into this narrative by fusing imaginary elements. She speculates what might have been in their minds while they decided to marry. Was it purely love or a survival instinct? Probably both?

Still I Rise - Maya Angelou - A Motivational Poetry

Maya Angelou is one of the most celebrated American Poets of our time. Born in 1928, her life has spanned much of the African American struggle for racial equality. She was a confidant of Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In this poem about African American Courage, Angelou embodies the power, courage and tenacity of the African American experience.

Maya Angelou, whose given name was Marguerite Annie Johnson, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 4, 1928. Her father, Bailey Johnson, was a doorman and navy dietician, and her mother, Vivian Johnson, was a nurse and card dealer.

Growing up, Angelou’s home life was chaotic and sometimes emotionally distressing. Angelou’s parents divorced when she was three, and her home life became unstable. In the years following, Angelou and her brother were shuffled from place to place, including their grandmother’s home in Stamps, Arkansas.

After returning to St. Louis at age eight, Angelou was sexually assaulted by her mother’s boyfriend, Freeman. Angelou told her brother, who told the rest of the family, and Freeman was arrested and charged. He was only held in jail for one day, but he was murdered shortly after his release. Some scholars think Angelou’s uncles were responsible, seeking revenge for what Freeman had done to Angelou.

After Freeman’s murder, Angelou returned to live with her grandmother in Arkansas and spent five years virtually mute. It wasn’t until a teacher and family friend, Mrs. Bertha Flowers, took an interest in Angelou that she was able to find her voice again.

"Still I Rise" is a verbalized legacy formed from the roots and depth of her heart. Maya Angelou exhilarated how to overcome life barriers as she exhaled a fulfilling visual capacity of a woman's strength. All by demonstration of her God given gifts; she augmented her worldly talents. Her writings left an everlasting imprint on my heart. Her book of poetry will continue to shed light and guidance for one's cultural path. I will forever follow her footprints filled with love, inspirational road maps and unforgettable resiliency.

Meera Bhajan | Bala Main Bairagan Hoongi | Reverting to The Eternity - Based on Raga Chayanat
with Her Mystic Poetry - The Divine Love of Mirabai

Baala Main Bairaagan Hoongee.
Jin Bheshaan Mhaaro Saahib Reejhe Sohee Bhesh Dharoongee.
Seel Santosh Dharoon Ghat Bheetar Samata Pakad Rahoongee.
Jaako Naam Niranjan Kahiye Taako Dhyaan Dharoongee.

Meera, better known as Mirabai and venerated as Sant Meerabai, was a 16th-century Hindu mystic poet and devotee of Krishna. She is a celebrated Bhakti saint, particularly in the North Indian Hindu tradition.

Mirabai was born into a Rajput royal family in Kudki (modern-day Pali district of Rajasthan) and spent her childhood in Merta. She is mentioned in Bhaktamal, confirming that she was widely known and a cherished figure in the Bhakti movement culture by about 1600 CE.

Most legends about Mirabai mention her fearless disregard for social and family conventions, her devotion to Krishna, her treating Krishna as her husband and being persecuted by her in-laws for her religious devotion. She has been the subject of numerous folk tales and hagiographic legends, which are inconsistent or widely different in details.

Millions of devotional hymns in passionate praise of Krishna are attributed to Meerabai in the Indian tradition, but just a few hundred are believed to be authentic by scholars, and the earliest written records suggest that except for two hymns, most were written down only in the 18th century. Many poems attributed to Meera were likely composed later by others who admired Meera. These hymns are commonly known as bhajans, and are popular across India.

Hindu temples, such as in Chittorgarh fort, are dedicated to Mirabai's memory. Legends about Mirabai's life, of contested authenticity, have been the subject of movies, comic strips and other popular literature in modern times.

Mirabai was a born poet. She expressed her deep devotion to Shri Krishna. With her ektara in hand, she sang hundreds of kirtans that she composed each full of piety, love, and dedication. Even today many people still sing her kirtans. Although she was a queen, she traded all her riches to worship Shri Krishna Bhagwan.

Invictus | William Ernest Henley | A Motivational & Life Changing Poem

There are going to be people who tell you that you can't. There will be times when you feel like you've gotten run over by a fleet of trucks. But ultimately, it's you who is "the master of [your] soul". You have a choice about how to behave, what to do and who to become. No one can take that from you. For the recognition of and thankfulness for a warrior spirit, and for the staunch emphasis on both personal responsibility and courage, Invictus consistently ranks as the most inspirational poem of all time.

William Ernest Henley (23 August 1849 – 11 July 1903) was a British poet, writer, critic and editor in late Victorian England. Though he wrote several books of poetry, Henley is remembered most often for his 1875 poem "Invictus". Henley was born in Gloucester on 23 August 1849, to mother, Mary Morgan, a descendant of poet and critic Joseph Warton, and father, William, a bookseller and stationer. William Ernest was the oldest of six children, five sons and a daughter; his father died in 1868.

A short poem told from the perspective of a traveller who stops to watch the snow fall, and, in doing so, reflects on the conflict between man and nature and the wishes and obligations we face in our lives.

Robert Lee Frost (March 26, 1874 – January 29, 1963) was an American poet. His work was initially published in England before it was published in the United States. Known for his realistic depictions of rural life and his command of American colloquial speech, Frost frequently wrote about settings from rural life in New England in the early 20th century, using them to examine complex social and philosophical themes.

Frost was honored frequently during his lifetime and is the only poet to receive four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry. He became one of America's rare "public literary figures, almost an artistic institution". He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1960 for his poetic works. On July 22, 1961, Frost was named poet laureate of Vermont.

William Wordsworth (7 April 1770 – 23 April 1850) was an English Romantic poet who, with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped to launch the Romantic Age in English literature with their joint publication Lyrical Ballads (1798).

Wordsworth's magnum opus is generally considered to be The Prelude, a semi-autobiographical poem of his early years that he revised and expanded a number of times. It was posthumously titled and published by his wife in the year of his death, before which it was generally known as "the poem to Coleridge".
