Like Graham Gooch before him, Saeed Anwar’s Test career started with a ‘pair’, against the West Indies at Faisalabad. As pairs go, it wasn’t a bad one – inflicted by Curtly Ambrose and Ian Bishop – but it meant exile from the Test team for more than three years. The fact that he played cricket at all was more through luck than judgement. He grew up in Iran playing football, after his father obtained an engineering job there. However, when another job took him to Saudi Arabia, Anwar returned to Karachi to live with his grandparents. He carefully honed his technique in a garage, repeatedly facing the bowling of a friend from the area who covered a tennis ball with tape. That friend was Rashid Latif, and the two would go on to play sixteen Tests for Pakistan together. By the time he had a second chance of Test cricket he had already become prolific in ODI cricket, having notched up six centuries in his first forty-one matches. He was instrumental in giving Pakistan thrilling starts in the shorter form of the game, the speed of his scoring more reliant on grace and elegance than brute force. He had also acquired a degree in Computer Systems Engineering from NED University, and but for his cricket, he would probably have ended up studying for a Masters in the United States, like so many of his former student colleagues.

As with so many players, his strength could also be his weakness. For every scything cut played against a bowler offering him even a modicum of room outside his off stump, there was the occasional casual waft that invariably ended in the hands of a gully fielder. For thirteen years, Sir Viv Richards’ unbeaten innings of 189 made 🆚 England at Old Trafford in 1984 had stood as the world record score in ODI cricket. However, on 21 May 1997, the stars aligned for Anwar in Chennai against India and he struck 194 from 146 deliveries, with a little bit of help from Shahid Afridi, who acted as his runner from the eighteenth over onwards. Ironically, the man who finally dismissed him that day – Sachin Tendulkar – would himself eclipse Anwar’s record with the first ODI double-century some thirteen years later.

The highlight of his Test career also came against India, this time in the first match of the Asian Test Championship at Kolkata in February 1999. An estimated crowd of 465,000 saw Pakistan beat India by 46 runs in a match marred by crowd trouble but highlighted by one of the all-time great Test innings. India had grabbed a first-innings lead of 38 but Anwar carried his bat through Pakistan’s second innings of 316, scoring an unbeaten 188. It meant that the hosts needed 279 to win. The openers put on a century partnership, but the run-out of Sachin Tendulkar precipitated a collapse, and Pakistan ended up victorious. It remains the highest individual score for any Pakistan batsman carrying his bat through a Test innings.
