Redefining Theatre in Small-Town Karnataka | Sahana Pinjar | DH Changemakers 2025
Sahana Pinjar began her journey in theatre as a child, performing with her uncle’s group. Their plays were often a response to pressing social issues like violence and dowry deaths—challenges that were all too common in the slum where she grew up.
Witnessing firsthand how theatre could influence people’s attitudes and empower them to take a stand left a lasting impression on her. Today, she continues to harness this transformative power through her own theatre group, Bhavaikyata Vedike.
With training from Ninasam and a degree from the National School of Drama, Sahana is redefining the role of theatre in small-town Karnataka. Through her workshops, she inspires young men and women to become catalysts for change in their communities and their personal lives.

This artist is reviving Kaavi art in temples in Karnataka | Janardhan Havanje | DH Changemakers 2025
Kaavi Kale is everything for Janardhan Havanje. For the past 22 years, his only mission is to revive this vanishing art form.
Kaavi Kale is an art form where murals are made using red pigment called Kaavi.
The murals are carved into a lime plaster sutrface using a technique called etching.
The art form reflects the rich architectural heritage of Karavali or coastal Karnataka.
Kaavi Kale is usually found on buildings that are made using lime plaster. Unfortunately, with the introduction of cement in the region, Kaavi Kale gradually declined. Janardhan Havanje is mainly focussing on the restoration and documentation of Kaavi kale. He has done restoration of Kaavi murals in many temples across the Konkan region. Apart from the restoration, Janardhan is also focusing on increasing the popularity of the art form. He has created miniature forms of Kaavi kale like wall hangings, fridge magnets and coasters. He is now working to obtain a G.I (Geographical Indication) tag for the Kaavi Kale. Janardhan says that a G.I tag will give it international recognition.

Watch | DH Changemakers 2025: How Vinay Malge became the catalyst for Bidar's heritage revival
Since childhood, Vinay Malge has been deeply fascinated by the rich history and culture of his hometown, Bidar. He always dreamed of bringing together a team of like-minded individuals who would work for the development and revival of Bidar’s heritage. In 2012, he turned this dream into reality by forming a group called Team Yuvaa.
Team Yuvaa focused on the maintenance and restoration of historical monuments across #Bidar. Their most remarkable achievement was the revival of the Karez system, a unique network of subterranean aqueducts connected to open wells. The system was introduced to Bidar in the 15th century by the Bahmani rulers, this ingenious system once provided a vital water supply to the semi-arid region.
Vinay strongly believes that Bidar is as culturally and historically significant as other iconic places in #Karnataka, such as #Hampi, #Aihole, and #Mysuru. His ultimate dream is to put Bidar on the global map, inviting the world to experience its rich heritage and beauty.

How Sitara Akka is helping Class 10 students in Karnataka win at life
Life is so much better with an akka or anna (elder sister or brother) looking out for you.
Sitara Akka embodies this spirit, with its passionate volunteers embracing their sibling roles wholeheartedly.
Founded as a college project by Shriya Shankar, Sitara Akka started with a unique advantage—Shriya was just a few years older than the students she mentored. This close age gap became her greatest strength, creating a safe space where students felt comfortable asking questions openly and without hesitation.
Initially designed as an online education support for Class 10 students, Sitara Akka has now blossomed into a vibrant community spanning Karnataka.
Today, students regularly seek guidance from their akkas and annas, not just for academic doubts but also for mentorship and life advice. Beyond academics, this platform inspires students to dream big, empowering them to carve out paths for their future with confidence.

Vikas&Gowtham_Insta_Changemakers2025.mp4
While working in London, Vikas Brahmavar often walked along the river Thames and wondered why Bengaluru's lakes weren't as clean.
Over time, he decided to return home to work with water and the city.
A firm believer in India’s rich natural resources, Vikas soon realised that the dependence on fresh water sources was leading to water scarcity. Cities were being developed based on water inflow, with little consideration for the outflow.
The fate of treated and untreated water flowing into drains got Vikas thinking:
What if treated STP water could be processed to meet drinking water standards?
Driven by the belief that Indian cities can become water-abundant, Vikas and Gowthaman deployed innovative technology to create potable water from wastewater.

Bringing Back 10th-Century Weaves From Karnataka | Hemalatha Jain | DH Changemakers 2025
India’s textile heritage is often defined by royal silks, brocades, and muslins. But what did ordinary folk wear? That was the question driving Hemalatha Jain as she sought to rediscover lost weaves from Karnataka.
These were the fabrics worn by women working in the fields, sarees lovingly gifted by parents to their daughters on weddings, and sarees adorned with motifs wishing prosperity for pregnant women.
Over time, these weaves faded into obscurity, their meaning and symbolism forgotten. The rise of powerlooms replaced handlooms, and with them, the art of dyeing yarn, setting up looms, and perfecting yarn counts vanished with the master weavers.
For the past decade, Hemalatha Jain has journeyed across Karnataka, dedicated to reviving these forgotten weaves.
This is her story.
