Behind Ivy Glenn Designs is Glenn Keelan - RTE Super Garden Viewers Choice Winner 2016 Dublin. It was comissioned by the Fellini gallery in Berlin.

Meet Glenn

Glenn is a proud Teagasc college of Amenety horticulture Fetac level 6 graduate, that recently participated in the RTE show Supergarden, where he presented his first ever realised garden design of a colourful seaside retreat for a young family (read more in RTE Super Garden 2016 section). However new Glenn is to Garden design, he has worked in landscape maintanence for the past year a

nd gained practical experiences during the 2 years of college working on the grounds of National Botanic gardens Glasnevin, Brigits garden in Co.Galway and Ardgilan demesne and gardens in Co. Glenn and Garden design:

“The most appealing garden is the one that expresses the owners love of their garden and their individuality. I frequently admire how people living in urban areas take pride in their gardens. Whether kitsch, contemporary or cottage style, they each suit that particular individual. Personally for me, I find solace in a natural woodland style garden. I also appreciate gardens that consider environmental issues and that use re-cycled materials. Garden styles that appeal to me the least are the ones where planting is considered secondary. I dislike gardens that use a lot of artificial materials such as fake grass, plastic, etc...

Some of my favourite gardens in Ireland would be Altamont gardens, Brigit's Garden and Farmleigh house & gardens.”

Glenn and Arts & Crafts:

In his 20's Glenn lived in Berlin for a period of 5 years where he discovered his interest in Art, particulary very life like coloured pencil drawings. He has particpated in several group exhibitions in Berlin and Ireland (Belfast, Wicklow, Dublin and Rush) as well as been featured in Coloured Pencil magazine and Ann Kullbergs Colour magazine. One of Glenns larger undertakings in Arts was an outdoor mural (aprox. 4 x 4m) solely in colour pencil. This project took lots of determination and time as to cover such a large space in coloured pencil is not a laughing matter. Currently Glenn is doing a lot of sketching and abstract line drawings on wood and paper and once in a while these beautiful patterns turn out to be wearable wooden broches (available here). Aside from brooch making he also creates coloured pencil mushroom drawings on wood discs. Wood in general is Glenns new found love and he is “itching” to learn more. In the making of Super Garden, Glenn made his first upcycled pallet decking, decorative pallet wood pannels, a garden gate and a pallet wood table. He has tried his hand at carving spoons and making other decorative items also. Meet Aiva

Aiva is also a proud graduate of Teagasc college of Amenety horticulture Fetac level 6, that grew up on a farm in the unspoiled countryside of Latvia.

“ Nature and knowledge of plants enhance ones life immensely. For me its not just a retreat or a marginal part of a weekend activity, it is a lifestyle. Since childhood I have been brought for foraging trips collecting berries, mushrooms and herbal teas and this experienec has naturally equiped me with a feeling for plants, ability to recognize them, noticing differences etc. Never the less I have obtained a more scientific approach whilst studying at the Teagasc college and I still have plenty of learning to do.”

Aiva has gained hands on experience during her two year studies working on the grounds of National Botanic gardens Glasnevin, Brigits garden, Co.Galway and Ardgilan demesne and gardens in Skerries, Co. Among valuable expeiences she also worked as a horticulturalist at the beautiful Garden house, a lifestyle garden center in Malahide. Aiva and Crafts:

“ I love being creative in every possible way and seeing solutions to problems. In the past few years I have put my creativity towards creating crafts and participating in various craft fairs in Ireland and Berlin mainly around Christmas time. I have made earrings, brooches, decorative drawings and paintings, Christmas wreaths and decorations and finally fairy houses and fairy gardens. My preferred materials to work with are salvaged or found in nature.”

Aiva's decorative drawings have been sold to decorate a large hotel in Hamburg, Germany. Aiva has also colaborated with a self-published Austrian book writer Elisabeth Hauer on various projects. Aiva and Fairy houses:

“I think fairy houses appeal to grown ups and children equally. The beauty of natural materials just makes you want to beIieve in a bit of fairy magic. I started to make mini floral clothes sets in 2014, when I was searching for a gift for two friends of mine who were getting married, so I decided I would make mini wedding costumes that will always remind them of their big day. I used materials like dried poppy heads, birch bark, dried heads of chive flowers etc. From there on I have been making fairy clothes, mini scenes in glass jars and fairy houses. I love the magic in making something miniature and even more so, I love foraging for plants, moss, lychen for my litttle projects and seeing the endlesss possibilities that nature offers. ”
