A little something coming up this week with Gigonometry Dub main man Dave Conway this Thursday.
So go check it out.
Our first guest this week is Dave Conway!
Dave Conway aka The DC Experiment is a singer, songwriter and music promoter.
As lead singer with noughties outfit Trip Hazard, a subsequent solo album and latterly a variety of recordings and performances under the moniker of The DC Experiment, he has been compared to such luminaries as Morrissey (HotPress) and Bowie (The Irish Times) due to his passionate, non-stylised vocal delivery.
Like thousands of other such dedicated musical artists he has been commercially unsuccessful, yet continues to write, record and collaborate for the sheer love and joy of the act and the sense of community of like-minded souls.
Lockdown occurred during a lull in the musical life of the erstwhile promoter, having wound down the 8 year stint of monthly gigs known as Gigonometry in The Workmans Club, which he curated and MC’d, introducing nearly 400 acts to fans of original live music in the phenomenal Irish music scene, as well as the occasional visit from overseas acts from Spain, Holland, France, England and New Zealand.
The past year proved to be quite productive, with the release of two early singles, ‘Close Call’ and ‘Come On’, the latter song having contributions from ex- Trip Hazard bandmates, which then gave rise to the recording of some unfinished business from when the band broke up somewhat prematurely in 2007. Thus a brand new EP of Trip Hazard tunes awaits completion and mastering prior to a mid-2021 release.
Covid-19 has thus been a double-edged sword; the enforced downtime for the ex-Trip Hazard bandmates, two of whom are successful full-time musicians in the UK, offered up the option of virtual reunification. The resulting 4-track EP is perhaps their finest work to date, a full decade plus after a career of 4 EPs and an album.
The pre-Covid purchase of home recording equipment and software has also given rise to a further batch of collaborative recordings, with guest musicians willingly providing tracks, on top of the use of randomly recorded sounds (a murder of crows, kitchen utensils etc.). The challenge of incorporating arhythmic noises into a fixed-tempo musical track takes time, patience and lots of aural stitching, but ultimately proves that music is indeed everywhere.
As a lifetime dedicated gig-goer, he has filled that particular vacuum through enjoying the home concerts from the seemingly endless supply of talented and resilient musicians that make up Ireland’s music scene.
Check Dave out from 7pm this Thursday! 😁
