Despite having already released “Angels and “Let Me Entertain You”, it wasn’t until this week back in 1998 that Robbie Williams finally hit the top of the singles chart with Millennium. The song is based on Nancy Sinatra’s ‘You Only Live Twice” with Robbie Williams parodying James Bond in the music video.

And after rewatching the video, maybe Robbie Williams is the man to replace Daniel Craig after Craig’s final outing as 007 hits the cinemas at the end of this month?Or maybe not…

Michael Eavis came up with the idea of hosting the event on his farm in Somerset, and the event still takes place on his land. Originally called Pilton Pop, Blues & Folk Festival, the first event was supposed to be headlined by The Kinks but they were replaced at short notice by T. Rex; two bands that we regularly feature here on Rewind! Tickets were £1 and included free milk from the farm. What are your favourite memories of Glastonbury? Let us know in the comments.

🎼Gooold-fin-ger 🎼 On this day in 1964 the iconic James Bond film Goldfinger was released with the title track sung by Dame Shirley Bassey. Both the film and song would go on to be emblematic of the Bond franchise but did you know that the song very nearly got cut from the film because producer Harry Saltzman thought it was "the worst song he'd ever heard in his life". Fortunately, there wasn’t time to record a new song and so Bassey’s track remained, going on to reach the top 10 across Europe and become the definitive Bond theme. The film itself holds the record for fastest grossing film of all time and became the first Bond film to win an Oscar. Tell us in the comments what was the first Bond film you saw.

This was confirmed by Mel B in an interview with Cosmopolitan. Top of the Pops wrote the article with the nicknames for the band members and it just stuck with them.

41 Years ago ABBA had not ONE but TWO number one hits!

The classic ‘Winner takes it all’ and ‘Super Trooper’, released in August and November respectively.

The winner takes it all is notable due to the fact that ABBA member Bjorn wrote it about separating from his wife, who just so happened to be his fellow band member Agnetha! Not awkward at all! Okay, maybe a little. Especially when Agnetha was charged with singing her ex-husband’s divorce-inspired song where one person doesn’t want things to end and clings desperately to the relationship. I guess you could say Agnetha was a super trooper for doing such a thing!
If you want to learn more about radio training, there is a whole team of super troopers ready to guide you! Whether it’s radio training, podcasting, social content, or the chance to present on Christmas FM, check out radiohub for more information!

Rewind is taking you back, to this day in history on the 16th of August 1997, which sees the song and title track to the same movie, ‘Men in Black’ (MIB) hit the number 1 spot and it stay there for 4 weeks. The movie’s lead characters were agent ‘K’ played by Tommy Lee Jones and agent ‘J’ played by Will Smith. Smith had great success with rap duo, DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince but this track was Smith’s first solo hit, selling over 3 million copies and earning him a Grammy award for Best Rap Solo Performance.
The term MIB was created long before the song or movie existed. It was first credited to author John Keel in ‘The Mothman Prophecies’. Ufologist, Albert K. Bender claimed he was visited by three men in dark suits and told him to stop his inquiries into UFO’s or face imprisonment. Also, nonfiction writer Gray Barker featured men in black in his books; 1956’s, ‘They Know Too Much About Flying Saucers and 1984’s MIB; ‘The Secret Terror Among US’. Lowel Cunningham also penned MIB comic books in the 90’s where he explained in The New York Times in 1997; “I was taken with the whole idea of these powerful men who show up and keep the peace,”
In 2002 whilst on set on Men in Black 2, Will Smith was actually responsible for the premise of Men in Black 3. “At the beginning, something has happened and Agent Kay is missing and I have to go back to the past to go try to save young Agent K”. Director Barry Sonnenfeld replied; “Can we just finish this one?” The idea did get through and used over 10 years later with agent Kay, played by Josh Brolin and the movie, Men in Black 3 grossed over $624 million worldwide.
In 2014 there was a controversial Sony hack which revealed a report of a plan to mash up Men in Black with 21 Jump Street for one block buster movie. However, writer Oren Uziel, co-scriber of 21 and 22 Jump Street, was already penning ‘Men in Black 4 and so it never materialised.
The iconic black glasses worn by ‘K’ and ‘J’ were Predator II, made by Ray-Ban. To reduce their reflective properties, they were coated with a special film which meant removing the logo. Obviously Ray-Ban weren’t happy but the studio refused to overlay and place it back. After a bit of convincing, Will Smith made a compromise and dropped their name into the ‘Men in Black’ song:
The title held by me, MIB
means what you think you saw, you did not see
So don't blink be what was there is now gone
Black suits with the black Ray Bans on
This move along with the popularity of the movie catapulted sales of the $100 shades and in fact, the whole Ray-Ban catalogue. Slick move Mr. Smith.

This week in music history, Rewind is taking you back to 1988 and sees Yazz and The Plastic Population in the number 1 spot of the UK charts and staying there for 5 weeks; making it the second biggest hit of the year only topped by Cliff Richard’s Xmas song ‘Mistletoe and Wine’. Lead singer, Yasmin Evans had previous success that year as featured vocalist for band Coldcut with top 10 hit, ‘Doctorin’ the House’. Yazz followed on with the number 2 hit, ‘Stand Up For Your Love Rights’ and her final top 40 hit was a duet with Aswad singing ‘How Long’ in 1993.
So what happened to Yazz? Well, the London born singer separated from her husband and manager, Jazz Summers in the late 90’s, devoted her life to Christian faith, releasing an album, ‘Running Back To You’ in 2008, which documented her spiritual journey. She moved to Spain many years ago and now works as a teacher. Yazz made a British TV comeback on ‘This Morning’ to mark the 30th anniversary of the song and the tv programme in 2018. ‘The Only Way Is Up’ has become synonymous with the television programme, ‘The Only Way Is Essex’. This is Rewind.

One of the biggest movies released in 1998 was ‘Armageddon’. Performed for the movie, Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” might tick the boxes of a decent action-drama ballad, but what made it special was the connection to Armageddon’s lead. Since the movie deals with the sacrifice of one man (Liv Tyler’s onscreen dad, played by Bruce Willis) to save another (Liv Tyler’s onscreen boyfriend, played by Ben Affleck), the video played on the final heart-wrenching moment between Liv and Bruce by placing Tyler’s real Dad (Steven) into the good-bye scene. Which meant that regardless of your feelings about Aerosmith, the song reminded you repeatedly of just how sad the movie was. Taking you back, this is rewind!

This is Rewind and as we look back this week in history, Elvis Presley pops up twice! His song ‘You’re the Devil in Disguise’ sung along with his loyal backing singers, The Jordanaires, went to number 1 in the UK. In 1963. A song John Lennon described on the show ‘Juke Box Jury as “a miss” and that Elvis sounded too “like Bing Crosby now”.
This week in 2008, Elvis Presley’s iconic peacock beaded and embroidered jumpsuit went under the auction hammer and sold for $300,000. Elvis loved peacocks. He even had a commissioned stained glass room partition, designed by his girlfriend Linda Thompson, for his home in Graceland in 1974; (The same year he first wore the peacock jumpsuit in The Forum, Los Angeles). Presley was an animal lover and had many species on his property including a monkey, goats, dogs, chickens, pigs and peacocks. Sadly, his love for those peacocks didn’t last and were banished to Memphis Zoo when Elvis discovered that they were pecking the paint off his gold Cadillac on seeing their reflections in the car! Tune in to Rewind where you can hear the King and many other great artists.
