Remembering Charlotte Greenwood (25 June, 1890 – 28 December, 1977), the long-legged comedienne known for her solid comic timing and high-kicking dance routines. She made her Broadway debut as a dancing teenager in The White Cat (1905) and her unique "heels over head" kick steps made her a standout. She played a succession of featured musical roles, winning major notice in The Passing Show of 1912. Greenwood became a Broadway star as "Letty" in Pretty Mrs. Smith (1914) a role she repeated in So Long, Letty (1916), Linger Longer, Letty (1916) and Letty Pepper (1922).

Greenwood moved on to specialties in several 1920s revues, and made an easy transition to character roles in Hollywood musicals such as Flying High (1931), Down Argentine Way (1940) and Springtime in the Rockies (1942). She returned to Broadway to star as the goddess "Juno" in Cole Porter's Out of This World (1950), and was the feisty "Aunt Eller" in the big screen version of Oklahoma (1956), high kicks intact at the age of 62. After filming Oklahoma, she opted for a long and quiet retirement.

Remember That Time?
A New Musical, written and performed by Annmarie Cullen
International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival
The Outhouse, Capel Street, Dublin
----------------------------------------------------------------
For someone who confesses not to be a musical theatre aficionado/nerd, Annmarie Cullen has somehow tapped in to some of the elements which this writer believes will make Remember That Time? a future hit. The raw, real themes and emotions running through this all-too-short-but-very-sweet musical are backed up with an impressive variety of songs, either sung acoustically with her guitar, at the keyboard or with some subtle backing tracks to give the ambience a fitting lift.

Simplicity at its finest. That said, not a single track would have been out of place in a major musical production with the benefit of a full orchestral arrangement. Hell, at one time, I could clearly hear Billy Porter ‘Reclaiming Themselves’ with some magnificent vocal acrobatics and a full Gospel choir in back-up.

From the opening number, setting the scene with visceral clarity and calling us in to her soul-searching journey of self-rediscovery, Annmarie Cullen straps us in to the rollercoaster with the perfect amount of gravitas. We know it’s going to be tough, but as she stands confidently before us, enchanting us with relatable lyrics and melodic solemnity, we’re all invested before the first song is through.

This is a good a place as any to recognise the regret I feel, as I’m sure the rest of the audience did for not applauding the first song
it wasn’t that we weren’t feeling ‘Barcelona, I’m Not Mad At You’ – it was a rabbit-in-headlights moment, a slap to the senses. We’re suddenly here, at this uncertain crossroad, oh lordy, what's happening next? Was applause appropriate? We weren’t sure. The number was evocative, affecting, but it also felt very raw - nobody knew where the narrative was going and nobody wanted to be incorrect. Please accept my apologies for being so cowardly.

Thankfully, we didn’t have to wait too long for clarification. The lighter moments of comic relief provided were well-spaced and added an extra layer of humanity to this one-wonder-woman’s story of life, love, loss and learning.

‘Closer to Gold’ and ‘Reclaiming Myself’ were stand-out songs for me, but a special mention must be made for ‘State of You’ which, courtesy of Annemarie’s besties, came at the perfect moment to draw us in even deeper and had the audience captivated with the real-life hilarity only your true mates can provide when you need a kick up the arse.

The intimate black-box performance space in The Outhouse lends itself perfectly to this musical. The use of a screen to complement the spoken storytelling as well as the simple staging and quiet atmospheric lighting were all that was needed to deliver this tale. The pared-back, unfussy production really gives the audience the sense that this powerhouse on stage is an old friend of ours. We've come around with a good bottle of wine and we’re all very grateful that she chose us to confide in, let us halve her troubles and allowed us to travel with her through her pilgrimage to watch her arrive in one piece, with only the slightest, barely visible cracks.

Remember That Time? Is running as part of the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival until the 18th May at The Outhouse on Capel Street, Dublin and song demos from this brand-spanking-new musical can be purchased on Bandcamp.com (see picture). This writer strongly suggests you watch out for any future outings of this show and re-learn the name Annmarie Cullen. I’m proud to say that I was one of those who saw Remember That Time? first and I will be raving about it for a long time to come.
