Kalipha Jammeh, the CEO of Burong Wolal, a private sector farmer in Jahally Pacharr, CRR, has set his sights on revitalizing upland rice farming in his hometown. With a vision to bring his community back to the land, Kalipha is determined to breathe new life into the neglected fields that were once thriving but suffered during the sand mining years.

Kalipha’s ambitious plan is not just about restoring the agricultural heritage of Kartong; it’s about empowering his community and fostering a sense of unity. By encouraging his community members to reclaim their abandoned fields, he hopes to create a sustainable and self-reliant farming ecosystem. This community-based approach not only addresses the food security concerns of the region but also serves as a beacon of hope for a brighter future.

KOPIA’s Impact on Agricultural Practices in The Gambia

In a vibrant and sunny day in Sapu, the anticipation of the upcoming rainy season filled the air with excitement. The field day organized by KOPIA brought together a team of dedicated professionals, including Dr. Cho Chang Yeo, the Director of KOPIA in Senegal, Dr. Joung, KOPIA director in The Gambia, Director of SAPU Mr. John Mendy, head of Foundation Unit, NSS., Mr. Layen Mbye, and Mr. Baboucarr Gibba from NARI. Together, they embarked on a journey to explore the agricultural wonders of The Gambia, accompanied by local smallholder and private sector farmers.

The team’s visited Sahel Agribusiness rice field, a renowned certified rice seed grower located in Wellingara, Jahally, Central River Region. This visit provided an opportunity for Dr. Cho and his team to closely monitor and evaluate the premium quality rice seeds production processes. Their mission was clear - to enhance the agricultural practices and yield of the region.

Sahel Agribusiness showcased their dedication to sustainable agriculture and high-quality certified rice seeds production. Through their commitment to excellence, they have become a beacon farmer in the private sector, demonstrating that with the right techniques and resources, anything is possible.

Dr. Cho and his team departed with newfound insights and inspiration, leaving behind a trail of collaboration and knowledge exchange. Their visit to Sahel Agribusiness served as a catalyst for growth and development in the agricultural sector of The Gambia.
