Tension Between Senegal and Gambia Escalates Over Transport Corridor Dispute

A recent disagreement between Senegal and The Gambia has sparked strong emotions on both sides. The conflict revolves around a statement from the President of the Senegalese transport union, who denies Gambian control over the Senegambia corridor. This corridor is vital for transport between the two countries and has become a focal point of tension, with Gambians expressing their dissatisfaction.

The Dispute:

The issue began when Senegal’s transport union rejected the Gambian government’s decision to install tracking systems on trucks using the Senegambia corridor. He said we does not acknowledge this corridor as part of Gambian territory, which Gambians see as a challenge to their sovereignty.

Public Reactions:

We spoke to several Gambians to get their perspective on the situation:

- Fatoumata Jallow, a business owner, said, "If President Barrow gives in on this, it wouldn’t surprise me. It seems like he’s not protecting our national interests."

- Abdoulie Ceesay, a teacher, expressed his frustration: "Senegal’s stance is incredibly disrespectful. They refuse to acknowledge our control over this area."

- Alieu Fofana, a university student, called it a "serious insult," emphasizing the harm to national pride.

- Aissatou Bah, a civil servant, blamed the government: "This issue shows weak leadership. The current administration isn’t effectively defending our sovereignty."

On the other hand, Ousman Sowe, a truck driver, offered a different perspective. "The goods being transported are already cleared by customs and aren’t meant for The Gambia. This adds a layer of complexity."

The dispute over the Senegambia corridor highlights larger regional tensions and national insecurities. This corridor is essential for trade between Senegal and The Gambia. Senegal’s refusal to acknowledge Gambian control reflects broader struggles over regional influence and economic interests.

For The Gambia, this conflict reveals challenges in its diplomatic approach and leadership. Critics argue that President Barrow’s administration needs to better handle such international disputes to protect national interests.

The ongoing situation requires careful diplomacy from both countries. Resolving this dispute is vital for maintaining stable relations and ensuring regional cooperation. The Gambia must address its domestic concerns while finding a diplomatic solution with Senegal.

The growing tension between Senegal and The Gambia over the Senegambia corridor highlights the complexities of regional diplomacy. With strong public reactions and ongoing negotiations, the situation is still evolving. How both governments handle this issue will impact their relationship and regional stability. Balancing national interests with cooperation is key for both nations as they navigate this conflict.

Fatoumata Bah Highlights Struggle with Rising School Costs.

Fatoumata Bah, a Gambian educator and mother of three, has expressed her frustration over the rising costs of her children’s education. She shared her feelings, saying, “Budgeting for the coming school year got me in my feelings. May Allah make it easy for all parents, especially those with multiple kids.”

The high price of educational materials, such as a single children’s book costing over D1000, is a significant concern. This amount is nearly half of an average Gambian monthly salary. Families are struggling with not only the cost of books but also school fees, uniforms, and transport.

We need to find ways to address these financial pressures. Reducing education costs and providing community support could help ease the burden on families and make education more accessible for all Gambian children.

Ex-General Bora Colley Arrested After Midnight Surrender—What’s Really Going On?

In a surprising twist, ex-Brigadier General Bora Colley, a former top officer of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), was arrested just after midnight on August 9, 2024. Colley, who has been on the run since 2017 after ex-President Yahya Jammeh fled to Equatorial Guinea, suddenly turned himself in at Yundum Barracks. This unexpected arrest has left many Gambians with big questions about what’s really happening.

What We Know:

The GAF announced in a press release that Colley surrendered voluntarily and was arrested by the Military Police. They mentioned that GAF intelligence had been keeping an eye on his residence in the Greater Banjul Area before he turned himself in. But despite these details, many people are suspicious and think there might be more to the story.

Why Are People Worried?

The idea that Colley, a man who had been hiding for over seven years, would suddenly surrender on his own is raising eyebrows. Some believe there might be hidden reasons behind his arrest—maybe he was pressured into it, or maybe powerful people are involved. The GAF’s lack of details about how Colley got back into the country and why he chose now to surrender has only made people more suspicious.

For many, Colley’s arrest is bringing back painful memories. He was allegedly part of the "Junglers," a feared squad linked to human rights abuses during Jammeh’s rule. Victims and their families are demanding the truth and want justice to be served.

Public Reaction:

As news of Colley’s arrest spread, social media lit up with discussions. The hashtag quickly started trending, with people sharing their concerns and demanding answers. Many are calling for a full investigation to understand what really happened and whether the GAF is being honest about the situation.

What’s Next?

There are still so many questions: How did Colley return to Gambia without being caught? Why did he choose now to surrender? And what will happen next? These are the questions on everyone’s mind, and people are eager to learn more. You can join the conversation by commenting below or using the hashtag on social media.

Stay Informed:

This isn’t the first time the GAF has been in the spotlight for controversial actions. There have been other cases in the past involving ex-Jammeh loyalists that raised similar concerns. Ahmed Gitteh's Take on UDP's 2026 Presidential Race.

Ahmed Gitteh, a prominent NPP member, has made a bold statement about the 2026 presidential election. He welcomed Hon. Lawyer Ousainou Darboe's announcement of his candidacy for the UDP but believes that Darboe is the easiest candidate for the NPP to defeat.

Gitteh added that while he disagrees with Darboe's claim of being the best leader for the UDP, the NPP is preparing confidently for their second win in 2026.

Public reactions to Gitteh's comments are mixed, sparking ongoing debate about the upcoming election.

Fishermen Demand Action Against Large Boats Destroying Gambian Waters.

Date: August 9, 2024.

By: Jankey Ceesay.

Fishermen in Tanji are asking the government to step in, as large commercial boats are ruining Gambian waters and making it hard for them to earn a living.

Amadou Bah, a local fisherman, said that these big boats are catching too many fish and often throwing away the smaller ones. "These boats are making it tough for us to catch enough fish. They’re hurting our chances to make a good living," Bah explained.

Lamaing Jatta, another fisherman, pointed out the dangers these boats pose. "They frequently crash into our canoes, which can cause serious damage and even risk lives," Jatta said. He also noted that the fish caught by these large boats are usually sent abroad instead of being sold locally, which hurts the community’s access to seafood.

The fishermen are urging the government to ban these large boats from certain fishing areas to protect the local fish population and their jobs. They hope the government will act quickly to help restore balance to their fishing industry and support their livelihoods.

Chairman Darboe of the Brikama Area Council (BAC) recently traveled to Indonesia, where he was given $1000 (D68,000) for expenses. In a move that's winning praise, he returned with D36,000 unspent, and unlike many, handed it all back to BAC's account.

This action is a clear example of the transparent leadership the United Democratic Party (UDP) stands for. Photos showing Chairman Darboe returning the money are spreading fast, with many applauding his honesty.

Chairman Darboe's decision highlights the importance of integrity in public service, setting a positive example for others to follow. This is the kind of leadership that builds trust and shows that transparency is possible in Gambian politics.

"166 Gambians Return from Tunisia with IOM Support"

This week, 166 Gambians, including six women, returned home from Tunisia with the help of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). They participated in a voluntary repatriation effort supported by the European Union.

The return was made possible through the EU’s Migrant Protection, Return, and Reintegration in North Africa (MPRR-NA) program, which began in January 2023. This initiative is crucial as Tunisia and other parts of Africa are experiencing a significant increase in migration, particularly towards Europe.

As these returnees readjust to life in The Gambia, they will receive personalized reintegration programs to assist them. These programs are designed to provide social and economic support, yet the challenge is substantial—many returnees encounter difficulties in securing employment and reintegrating into their communities.

This return represents another step in addressing the migration crisis, but it also underscores the ongoing necessity to address the root causes that drive people to leave their homes in the first place. For these 166 Gambians, the journey isn’t over—rather, it's just beginning in a new way.

"Gambia's Economy: The Importance of Boosting Productivity"

Gambia is currently experiencing economic challenges, with many of its citizens still grappling with poverty. Experts argue that in order to reverse this trend, the government must prioritize increasing productivity. They believe that this shift in focus could be the key to enhancing the country's economic well-being.

The growth of Gambia's economy is not as robust as it could be due to low productivity being a significant factor. This means that the country is not maximizing its resources, hindering economic expansion and job opportunities.

Productivity involves achieving more with the same or fewer resources. When productivity improves, businesses can increase their output of goods and services, leading to higher incomes and improved living standards. Enhancing productivity requires investments in education, technology, and infrastructure.

The government must enact effective policies to enhance productivity. This involves supporting education and training, promoting the adoption of new technologies, and improving infrastructure. These measures will help businesses operate more efficiently and generate more employment opportunities.

Numerous countries have notably improved their economies by focusing on productivity. By drawing lessons from these successes, Gambia can develop strategies tailored to its specific needs and pave the way for similar achievements.

Boosting productivity must be a top priority for the government in order to foster economic growth and alleviate poverty in Gambia. By making productivity a focal point, the country can improve its economic standing and build a better future for its citizens.

From Gambia to the World: The Realities Behind the Dream of Europe.

Dennis Schroeder, a basketball star with global roots, recently played a game against Greece at the Stade Pierre Mauroy in Paris. In an interview, he shared an insightful moment when asked about his fans in Gambia.

"Yes, we've got fans in Gambia, but we're everywhere—Sweden, Denmark, London. People in Gambia grow up dreaming of Europe, thinking it's paradise. But when they get here, it's still tough. You have to work hard to live a good life."

His statement resonates with many Gambians who migrate to Europe, chasing a dream that often turns out to be more challenging than expected. While stars like Schroeder symbolize success, their stories often mask the struggles of the broader Gambian diaspora. Many face harsh realities, working tirelessly to build a life far from home.

New Medicine Regulations Stir Concerns in The Gambia.

President Adama Barrow recently met with key healthcare stakeholders to discuss the impact of new medicine import regulations, which have caused concerns about drug shortages and price increases.

Main Points:

The Medicines Control Agency (MCA) introduced strict rules for importing medicines after a tragic incident that led to the deaths of several children. These rules require English labels, manufacturer details, and registration numbers on all imported medicines. Importers must also provide samples for testing.

- Pharmaceutical Industry’s Concerns:

The Pharmacy Association of The Gambia voiced concerns that these regulations are causing medicine shortages and driving up prices. They proposed solutions like translating labels and using stickers, but the Health Minister, Dr. Lamin Samateh, warned this could lead to inconsistencies.

- Government’s Response:

President Barrow acknowledged the industry's challenges but emphasized that the regulations are necessary to prevent future tragedies. He urged pharmacies not to use shortages as an excuse to raise prices and called for cooperation to ensure safe and affordable medicine for all Gambians.

Conclusion:
The government and healthcare sector are working together to find a balance between ensuring public safety and maintaining access to essential medicines. The outcome of these discussions will be crucial for the future of healthcare in The Gambia.

Unequal Land Distribution Sparks Controversy for Gambian President Adama Barrow

The Gambian government is currently facing criticism regarding the distribution of land. There are concerns that high-ranking officials, including former Vice President Ousainou Darboe, the UDP leader, are receiving more land than lower-income citizens. This contradicts President Adama Barrow’s promises of fair land distribution.

Many Gambians are struggling with housing, and the gap between the rich and ordinary people is widening. Reports suggest that land allocation has not been transparent, leading to accusations of favoritism and corruption.

The public is outraged and calling for a review of land distribution practices and more transparency to ensure fairness and rebuild trust in the government.
