# # Addressing Intimidation and Corruption: A Call for Reform in Ebonyi State
On the evening of Tuesday, July 9, 2024, I visited a friend in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State. It was around 8 pm when I decided it was too late to find convenient transportation back to my destination. I contacted my brother, who agreed to pick me up on his motorcycle.
As we passed the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, we encountered a checkpoint manned by Ebube Agu Security guards. Obediently, we stopped when they flagged us down. Their leader approached me harshly, demanding I dismount the bike, which I did without protest. He scrutinized me briefly before deciding I was "a gentle guy" and opted not to search me. However, he instructed my brother to "settle" them, threatening to confiscate his motorcycle and take it to their station unless a payment was made. He mentioned a bail fee of 20,000 naira if we didn’t comply.
My brother hesitated, trying to gather the demanded amount. While doing so, he expressed his frustration, saying, "But bro, this is not how to do things o." In response, the leader ordered one of his men to slap my brother and forcibly remove him from the bike. At this point, I could no longer remain silent. I intervened, questioning their actions: "What has warranted this violence? Was he not complying with your demands? Why slap and push him when he was only expressing his frustration?"
These questions went unanswered. The guards proceeded to seize my brother’s motorcycle, instructing him to retrieve it the next day from their office with a 20,000 naira bail fee. Fortunately, after a quick phone call, external intervention arrived. After a series of delays, the bike was returned to us.
This incident raises critical questions: Why do we subject ourselves to such treatment during these challenging times? Why are we our own worst enemies, particularly in this region? Such actions drive people to seek opportunities abroad, often never to return. It is high time these coercive tactics and intimidation cease.
The government must address these issues urgently. Such acts tarnish the reputation of the state and undermine the efforts of our governor, who strives to ensure that the people of Ebonyi State benefit from his leadership. It is imperative that these unjust practices be curbed to restore faith in local governance and security forces.
We must collectively work towards a society where citizens are treated with respect and dignity. Only then can we truly enjoy the benefits of good governance and foster a community where everyone feels safe and valued.
