Another corruption scandal involving State House

Tourism Minister Hamat Bah and Chief of Staff Mod K.Ceesay allegedly sold a prime part of the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center grounds to the Senegalese construction company, Arezki Group.

A top government insider disclosed: "The land grabbing and selling by Hamat Bah has taken a more daring and sinister turn. He is now grabbing lands already developed from established institutions and selling them to the highest bidder. First, it was Monkey Park to Americans, and after sustained pressure from environmentalists, the latter backed out. Now it is the turn of OIC property."

He continued: "When is the tourism minister going to stop this sinister deal of selling all our precious land jewels to some greedy investors and pocketing the money? How many such deals has he embarked on in the past? Is he in a haste to grab more money and gather enough resources so that he can prepare for his presidential bid just in case? Already with his properties strewn in Senegal, all financed by this type of deals, this man is in real haste."

Hamat Bah and Chief of Staff Mod K. Ceesay are said to be close friends. Mod is also friends with Arezki. In fact, he named his son after one of the Arezki brothers.

Do you wonder why Arezki won most government contracts when Mod was Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure?

We will tell you more about the land they gave to Arezki! Hamat and Mod allegedly sold it without the knowledge and involvement of the Ministry of Local Government and Lands and the current custodians of the land, OIC-Gambia.

On behalf of the entire Management team of Myk Jayda, we’ll like to show our gratitude to everyone that has in one way or the other contributed towards his release from custody. Your support and timely intervention made it possible. We thank Baboucarr Sagnia, Lawyer Fama Taal and two other Lawyers (Names Withheld) for immensely taking this case as their own with no pressure on Myk in fulfilling his financial obligations. We are deeply grateful.

But His family represented by Alhagi Kebbeh, Team Gom Sa Bopa represented by Lamin Sey, Gambia Music Union represented by Pa Modou Sarr, friends and fans had relentlessly and tirelessly worked to secure the release of Myk.

To our able Lord Mayor, Talib Ahmed Bensouda who together with his friends in development, Nenneh Freda Gomez and MC Cham Jnr launched a fundraising telethon and raised a whopping D230,000 within 2hrs, we say thank you. To the various donors towards the telethon, Fatou Touray of Kerr Fatou, Ansu Singateh and Saibo Manneh, Raffie Diab, Saul Frazer, Fatu Camara of TFN, ST, Sine Diab of Africel, and all the anonymous donors, we are grateful for your support. May God replenish your pockets.

On the purported One Million Dalasis that made the rounds on social media over the last months or so, we are glad to clear the air to say that it was all false. There was no such money donated towards this course. However, we thank our brothers Steve Trawally and Gibou Bala Gaye who in the heat of things, had each donated D100,0000 from the onset of the campaign. We are grateful to you both.

To The Gambian Shadesroom, we thank you and all the people who donated through your fundraiser. Your contributions have gone a long way paving the way for more support to have come in. While we look forward to moving ahead, we apologize for the misunderstanding that led to some setbacks in the past.

Hilda Baci became a national sensation after cooking for four days last month.
She cooked for 100 hours - and was allowed a five-minute break each hour or the equivalent over several hours.
However GWR has logged her record at 93 hours 11 minutes, docking her seven hours for taking a longer break than allowed on one occasion.
She still beat the previous record by more than five hours set in Rewa, in central India in 2019 by Indian chef Lata Tondon.

NPP Diaspora Executives Press release

The National People’s Party (NPP) Diaspora Chapter would like to register its utmost concern around the purported NPP Diaspora Congress in Sweden in which some Diaspora NPP supporters claim to have selected another Diaspora Executive Members.

It could be recalled that the Umbrella NPP Diaspora conducted their Congress back in December 2022. This was done virtually under the auspices of the outgoing NPP Diaspora Chairman, Mr Lamin S. Demba. In that said Congress, the entire NPP Diaspora chapters participated across the globe and elected a decentralised Congress across all the regions of the NPP Diaspora. Mr Lamin Fadera was elected as the chairman of the NPP Diaspora.
It was disappointing that few Diaspora members decided to boycott that Congress on the grounds that they wanted the congress done in Sweden and a form of Musical Jamboree. Putting into account the African delegates might be disadvantaged due to visa restrictions and financial constraint reason, the outgoing Chairman outlined those potential restrictions to the members who are in Africa and indicated that there is a possibility the African delegates will be denied the chance to participate in the Congress. Upon consultations with the outgoing Executive, it was then unanimously agreed that Congress be done virtually. To everyone’s dismay, a few individuals who have not been cooperating with the outgoing Diaspora Executive Decisions decided to boycott the Congress.

Considering the above stated, it is not a surprise that the purported congress done in the name of the NPP Diaspora was confined to these very few people who boycotted the NPP Umbrella Diaspora Congress back in December 2022. We have confirmed that Demba SABALLY who attended the so-called congress was neither sent by the President as claimed by him, non by the party to attend this so-called Congress in Sweden, Therefore the NPP Diaspora Umbrella will like to call on Demba Sally to desist from interfering into the NPP Diaspora matters, as it is NOT under his purview neither his responsibility at the NPP Executive level.

The National People’s Party (NPP) Diaspora Chapter would like all and sundry to know that this purported Congress in Sweden does not represent the NPP Diaspora Chapter but rather few individuals who are out to gain self-relevance in the name of NPP Diaspora. We therefore condemn this group hell bent on showing seeds of separation and discord within the NPP Diaspora. The umbrella NPP Diaspora Executives Elected back in December are tabled below.

Ousmane Sonko decided not to meet with any mediator on the basis of an authorization issued by Antoine Diom Interior Minister. He believes that before talking about mediation, we must first start by denouncing his illegal kidnapping him and his family. And demand from the state to stop its practices that trample on its rights. Therefore, he informs the national and international opinion that he is living this situation in a stoic way and with great determination to continue his political fight out of respect to those hundreds of young Senegalese coldly murdered and with impunity.

Over 350 injured in Senegal clashes, Red Cross says

Red Cross in Senegal says over 350 have been injured, with 16 people reported to have died, in violent clashes that broke out on Thursday between security forces and demonstrators following the sentencing of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko to two years in prison.

Mr Sonko was convicted on charges of 'corrupting youth', however, his supporters believe his conviction was politically motivated in order to keep him out of the 2024 presidential race.

Amid the political tension, the Senegalese government has restricted access to mobile internet, to stop the sharing of what it called "subversive messages".

Police trying to identify a Gambian man found dead in the undercarriage of a plane at Gatwick Airport have released an e-fit image.

The discovery was made on board a Tui flight that had travelled from The Gambia's capital Banjul on 7 December.
Police are investigating the case in order to formally identify the man.

Det Insp Darren Lillywhite said: "Somewhere, this man will have relatives or loved ones who do not know what has happened to him."

Sussex Police are working in partnership with the High Commissioner for The Gambia, Interpol and HM Coroner.

'Tragic case'

Det Insp Lillywhite said the man is believed to be in his 20s or 30s.
"This was a tragic case," he said.

"We hope to be able to identify him for the purposes of an inquest to be held by HM Coroner, which may at least provide some answers and closure for those who knew him."

He said police are seeking contact from anyone in the UK that may have been expecting to meet a friend or family member who failed to arrive in December.

The 2,760-mile (4,444 km) journey from The Gambia to the UK usually takes about six and a half hours on a direct flight.

Press Release: NPP Condemns Attack on Journalists, Encourages Respect for Civil Liberties

The National People’s Party (NPP) learned with dismay, the allegations of assault on two journalists who were covering the swearing-in ceremony of elected local officials at the Banjul City Council (BCC) on Wednesday, 31st May, 2023. While the victims have alleged to have been attacked by supporters of the NPP, the Party could not verify this claim as we went to press.

That notwithstanding, the governing NPP leadership does not condone assaults or affronts on citizens’ rights including those of journalists especially, in the exercise of their civic duties.

Therefore, the National People’s Party condemns in the strongest terms, the alleged assault on these two journalists and any other citizens or residents of The Gambia and will work with The Gambia Press Union (GPU) and complainants to address this unfortunate matter.

As reasonable political party, we recognize the pivotal role of media practitioners in the consolidation of our new democratic dispensation and will continue to support them in the exercise of our common democratic and fundamental rights as enshrined in our Constitution.

The National People’s Party is grounded in the democratic tradition of encouraging the rule of law and respect for civil liberties including press freedom which is an integral part of our accountability process.

Accordingly, the NPP urges its membership, supporters, partners and well wishers to always strengthen and maintain cordial relations with the media corps.

Seedy S.K Njie
Deputy Spokesman, NPP.
Thank you.

23/05/2023

Reply To UDP Lawyer Ousainou Darboe,

Your recent brazen attack and comments towards our Mayoral Candidate are far too recent to be relegated into oblivion in the midst of time. It is obvious that those with frivolous and mischievous minds will find it interesting and amusing. However, those with character and fecundity of thought will not find it difficult to understand that those comments are carefully calculated to deceive The Gambian population.

While we appreciate the opportunity for dialogue, it is important to address the fallacies and inconsistencies in your statements.

You highlight the fact that Mr. Badjie lost the KM Mayoral Elections, implying that this should warrant his resignation. A reminder that you are not the right person to make such statements will be apt considering your own track record wherein you have lost six national elections and counting yet you accepted a ministerial/vice presidential position after that only to be subsequently fired. This does not lend itself to offering any advice on candidates resigning.

Furthermore, your decision to run for a sixth time and experience yet another defeat raises questions about your understanding of the will of the people. Gambians have consistently shown, on multiple occasions, that they lack confidence and belief in your leadership abilities if we are to go by your yardstick. It is evident that your repeated attempts to secure electoral victory have been met with rejection, indicating a clear lack of public trust. Your thirst for power should not be quenched by utterances that are below the expectations of a legal practitionerwith decades of experience who is expected to practice what he preaches.

It’s unfair for you to criticize Mr. Badjie's electoral loss by implying a lack of confidence in his ability. The people of Kanifing Municipality have spoken through their votes, and their decisions should be respected. Mr. Badjie's dedication to public service and his willingness to accept a ministerial position demonstrate his commitment to serving his community, regardless of electoral outcomes.

While we recognize the importance of robust political discourse, it is essential to base arguments on facts and fair assessments. Your comments only serve to highlight your own political shortcomings and your apparent inability to accept the will of the people.

In conclusion, we encourage you to reflect on your own electoral history and focus on constructive engagement that can benefit the Gambian people. We remain committed to serving the public and working towards the betterment of our community.

36 YEAR OLD WOMAN HOUSE ATTACKED

The house of a 33 year old woman who was abandoned by her husband in 2021 after taking a second wife was attacked by some burglars.

Since there was not much they could take, the bed which was donated to her by some samaritans after writing her story in 2022, all got recently broken by burglars and it’s currently not in use.

She lives in an incomplete building with her kids because she can’t afford to pay a house rent by herself. She explained to this medium that, the theft happened when she went to to sell “Nana” at the market and her kids attended darra while the elder one who’s just 16 went to work.

“I still do not have a residence of my own, I'm currently staying in someone’s compound, but the lavatory is just miserable. Nothing there is in place. The door was all broken and I have to hire a carpenter to repair the broken door. And unfortunately, we haven't been able to identify the burglars. This person came to disturb herself because there is no valuable thing in my house which they can go with” She said.

She added that, right now she definitely will need some support to at least get her own house where she could reside comfortably with her kids as living in someone's compound is never really easy and there are no signs of ever seeing her husband again.

“Regarding my husband, the last time I set my eyes on him was some three years ago. And anytime he comes he would give just D200 to his kids and leave. As a matter of fact, he hasn't shown up throughout last Year. I am now typically into 'nana' business, I do sometimes make profits if the goods quickly get finished, but if things didn't go well, all the goods will perish. Selling 'nana' at the market too is really not so easy, as I do not have my own fix table there where I can be selling my goods. So, anywhere I sit, they will be chasing me away, and I will have to keep roaming and roaming all day.

But however, I would appreciate if I could get some support to start my own business where I will have to sit at one place and be selling my goods.”

The 36 year old woman said, she’s always at the hospital because she has not been feeling well since last year January, “As a matter of fact, I was in fact at the hospital to today to look for medications as I am not feeling alright at all. Too much of suffering and stress could sometimes lead to all these sicknesses and body pains.”

She lamented that, There’s only one person who was helping her but that one also went missing for a while and there’s no other person to support her. She has been doing everything all by herself and her kids ain’t attending any school because she couldn’t afford to be heading the family and be paying the fees at the same time.
