BRIEF HISTORY OF AMU - MEMORIAL
S.D.A CHURCH TAKYIMAN

Just like the name presupposed , AMU - MEMORIAL S.D.C CHURCH was named after one OPANIN KWAME AMU who was the person that brought the seventh -Day Adventist Church and the advent message to Takyiman and its environs. Refer to the history of Central SDA Church for more information about Opanin Amu.

The Amu- Memorial SDA Church was established in August 1995, after a two weeks crusade organised by the Techiman South District of the SDA Church with Elder E.O.G Nsoah as at the preacher. After it’s establishment by the District, the following people were chosen to be the caretakers of the church.
Elder Job Yeboah, Eld. Hagen and Maame Kate Takyi (all of blessed memory )

The establishment of this branch of SDA wa was necessitated by the increasing number of Church members in the areas like Fante New Town, Karachi, Anyimana and increasing number of Sabbath Schools membership at Opanin Job Yeboah’s house and the surrounding suburbs.
Some of the challenges the church faced in establishing this new branch including the need for a church building.

There was also difficulty of convincing people nearby to worship in the new church instead of visiting the old central church, where they belonged. With the support of Opanin Hagan and othe elders , the church had a land opposite the VRA Substation where an interim Temple was put up for the new converts from the evangelistic campaign and the members nearby.

LEADERSHIP

Some of the leaders and Elders of the church included the following;
1. Job Yeboah
2. Opanin Hagan

HISTORY OF OFFUMAN

( DAMPAASO)

Offuman is located in the North- East of Takyiman some twenty-four (24) kilometres from Takyiman.
The people are farmers and the community has attracted settler farmers especially from northern Ghana. They cultivate food crops like yam, cassava, plantain, maize , and cash crops like oil palm tree , to***co, mangoes, oranges , banana, cashew , cocoa and teak tree. The people are predominantly Christian especially those in the Offuman township. Muslims are next to the Christian’s in terms of numbers but they are mainly found in the surrounding villages . The chief is the Asonahene of the Takyiman Traditional Area. He is a division two chief and responsible to the Takyiman Paramountcy. The chief(Offumanhene) has sub-chiefs who have specific assignments within the Offuman township.Offuman people live as collectives.

THE ORIGIN

The history of the people of Offuman- Dampaaso is directly linked to the migration
According to the history of the Dampaaso people, the people of Oforikrom left for Gyaaman in 1722 under the leadership of Nana Kesse Basahyia I during the 1722-1723 asante- Takyiman war. According to Dampaaso history, Nana Ankoma Nsia, the sixth of the siblings, was sent by his elder brother Kesse Basahyia I at Gyaaman in 1723 to go to Dwamti to find out whether the asante had left and that the place was safe for resettlement. Ankomah Nsia was a very young, brave and smart man and so the brother sent him to Oforikrom then Dwamti. At that time , according to Offuman history, they had moved to Nsamaneboso heading towards home. He was given guns and enough gun powder and bullets and together with some courageous man, they set off.
At a point in time he felt cold. The situation worsened when he crossed river kyiridi near current day Offuman. So he told his people that he needed to stay there a bit to enable him to recover from his sickness before they continued the journey. They stayed a little longer than they had expected but he did not recover, and so he sent some of the people who accompanied him to Dwamti. When they returned, he was informed that the place had been devastated by the Asante people and that there was nothing to write home about. He was not happy about this news and so he talked to his traditional doctor about going to Dwamti. The traditional doctor organised some herbs for him and after sometime, he was a bit better and so he decided to visit Dwamti himself as instructed by his elder brother- Nana Kesse Basahyia I . He was accompanied by his doctor who monitored his condition until they got there. He was shocked to note that the place had been levelled and that the only thing left was Ofori, the hunters hut. This made him worried and as he returned, his situation deteriorated but they managed to get to Dampa, where he had earlier stayed to cure himself.
He hoped that he would be well so that he could return to inform the brother of this development but his strength failed him . Before he left for Dwamtifrom Gyaaman, the mother, Nana Afiakyeraa Boin, the then queen mother of Dwamti had spoken to him in mother’s death, she asked one family members to put gun powder in a gun and shot into the atmosphere, signifying denouncement of her biological son . This did not go well with Ankoman Nsia and so he left for Dampa worried and angry for this level of humiliation his brother and other family members had subjected him to

T H E M E T A L M A S K

This metal mΓ sk was used during sl@very for 3 main reasons:

1) To prevent the ensl@ved from eating fruits such as apples, pineapples, oranges, cashews, bananas, plantains and sugarcanes etc while harvesting them, yet they were made to wΓ²rk consistently in all the plantation farms.

2) To stop the ensl@ved from chanting our African spiritual songs. Not only that those our spiritual and w@r songs affected the slàve masters, it also motivated some ensl@ved to rèbel and fìght back not minding l0sing their lives.

3) To stop ensl@ved form teaching our African local dialects (languages) to their children...whereby destr0yed our dialects, and forced them to learn foreign languages.

Last but not the least, to st@rve enslàved as a punishment in the slàve camps. The màsk prevented them from eating or drinking. Sometimes the slàve màsters would f0rced an apple (a whole 🍎) into the mouths of enslàved before they wore the metal mask on them with the padlocks so that they c0uldn't talk
