The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has decried the limited number of teachers in schools, especially those in Senior High Schools (SHS).

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has cautioned authorities at the various Senior High Schools against collecting any unauthorised and/or illegal charge from newly graduated final year students under the guise of the clearance system.

In a letter to Regional Directors, the Director-General, Prof Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, stated that the Service had received several complaints indicating that some school authorities were tasking the students to pay Parent Teacher Association dues and other charges while getting their clearances signed.


“Management of GES wishes to state categorically that under no circumstance should any school authority use the payment of PTA levies or any other unauthorised charges as part of the clearance system for final year students. Anyone who breaches this directive will be sanctioned,” he wrote.

Prof Opoku-Amankwa stated that school authorities are to only surcharge any student who misplaces, damages or defaces any school property.

“However, such charges are levied as per Management’s approved rates given to the schools through the respective Regional Directors in modes and manner so described,” he added.

A little over two months after he took office as the acting Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare will today, October 8, 2021, be named as substantive head of the Ghana Police Service.

The president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will swear him in today, making him the country’s 23rd IGP.

The names of the top 14 executives involved in the alleged theft and disappearance of oil products at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) have been revealed.

The Interim Management Committee of TOR after its investigations and audit of the company noted that in April 2021, a total of 18 drums of electrical cables worth GH₵10.4 million disappeared from the Technical Storehouse of TOR.

It was also discovered that there was a disappearance of LPG belonging to a client between 2012 and 2015, as a result of which TOR became indebted to the client to the tune of $4.8 million.

A teacher has disclosed that during the lockdown that resulted from the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic last year, students in public schools could not resort to online platforms for teaching and learning. Sabina, a Junior High School teacher, said there was no way public schools could have held online classes.

“Where will you get that online for a public school? There was nothing like that,” she said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday.
