REGIONAL GJA EXECUTIVES PAID FAMILIARIZATION VISIT TO KEY INSTITUTIONS
On Monday, August 01, 2022, the newly elected Regional Executives of the Ghana Journalists Association – Volta/Oti branch, paid a familiarization visit to some key institutions in the Volta Regional Capital, Ho.
The delegation led by the Regional Chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Agbaxode, includes, Vice Chairman, Mr. Kafui Gati, Treasurer, Ms. Ewoenam Kpodo, and the Administrator of Volta-Oti GJA Secretariat, Mr. Lambert Atsivor.
Accompanied by some colleague journalists, the delegation visited the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, the Regional Police Headquarters, the 66 Artillery Regiment, the Municipal Assembly and the office of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) to meet with the heads of these institutions.
The Administrator, who did the introduction, said it had become necessary to introduce the new Executives to the key stakeholders following their successful election and induction into office in June this year.
Regional Chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Agbaxode, in his remarks thanked the stakeholders for their continued support over the years. He pledged to build on the relationship and partnership established by the predecessors to enhance the capacity of journalists and media practitioners in the two regions, and for the development of both Volta and Oti.
He outlined some activities and programmes of the Association including the completion of the Press Centre Project, return of the Regional Awards and Dinner Night, Training and Capacity building for members, and regular engagements, thus, appealed for the support of stakeholders for success while assuring of the Association's support to the institutions.
The Regional Minister - Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, congratulated the new Executives on their election and wished them well. He assured of the VRCC's readiness to support the Association; knowing the important place of the media in the development of the region.
He called on the media not to always concentrate on reporting negative stories about the region but look out for the many positive things happening in the region. He hinted of plans to organise a soiree for the media which would have in attendance, the Minister of Information, Mr. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.
The Regional Police Commander, COP Edward Oduro Kwateng, expressed gratitude for the visit and expressed the willingness to continue to partner and support the new leadership in their endeavours which will serve the mutual interest of the Association and the Police in the region. He however called for balanced reportage from the media, especially on matters involving the Police.
Commanding Officer of the 66 Artillery Regiment, Lt. Col Edward Sarpong Appiah, reaffirmed his readiness to support the Association. He accepted proposal from the GJA Chairman for the Regiment to sponsor the Best Security Reporter category of the Regional Awards and looked forward to the awards which ii proposed for December, 2022.
He expressed gratitude for his consideration to be made an honorary member of the Association as planned by the immediate past Executives which Mr. Kafui Gati, the Vice-Chairman noted was still on the table.
Ho Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Divine Bosson, welcomed the Executives and reminded them of the big shoes they were stepping in and the need to work hard to meet the expectations of members.
He underscored the important place of the media in governance and development and charged them to be balanced and objective at all times. He noted that the concentration should not only be on political figures but everyone so that collectively, Ho, Volta and Ghana would be better.
He appreciated the support of the media to the Assembly and said the relationship would be strengthened for more to be done together for Ho to bounce back.
The MCE mentioned the "Keep Ho Clean" campaign, the "Oxygen City" concept, "Ho Expo 2022" among others that needed the media for the right outcome. He assured of his own and that of the Assembly's support for activities and programmes of GJA.
Regional Director of Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr. Alexander Nketia, congratulated the Executives and thanked them for the visit. He assured them of the Authority’s support and accepted to consider sponsoring the Best Reporter, Tourism category.
He noted that the Authority's doors were open for training of Journalists in Tourism reporting as it held great potentials for the region.
The familiarization tour of the Regional Executives will continue on later dates to other key GJA stakeholders and partner institutions in the Volta and Oti regions.
