Popular social media critic, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has been released from detention after spending nine days in police custody.

The popular activist regained his freedom in the late hours of Sunday

VeryDarkMan’s detention sparked widespread concern and outcry among his followers and fellow activists, raising questions about freedom of speech and online expression in Nigeria.

The activist was arrested by the police following claims that they had received multiple petitions against his online activities.
However, the specific details surrounding the allegations against him remain undisclosed.
Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the movement, confirmed VeryDarkMan’s release in a post shared via X on Sunday.

This is the second time this year the critic will be in police detention.
In January, he was reported to have been arrested after a petition by actress, Tonto Dikeh, over comments made in the late Nigerian singer, Mohbad’s case.

The encounter, which took place at the Etihad Stadium, saw Manchester City and Arsenal hand Liverpool the advantage in the Premier League title race.

Liverpool are now top of the table, two points clear of Arsenal and three ahead of City, after they came from behind to beat Brighton at Anfield.

Haaland took to his Instagram page after the game against Arsenal to confidently claim that City can come from behind to win the title, just like they did last season.
“We’ve done it once; we can do it again,” he wrote.
The Norwegian international is undoubtedly the best striker in the Premier League and perhaps in the world.
He has scored 29 goals with six assists in 35 games, which is a phenomenal return.

Pope Francis has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all Israeli hostages in an Easter Sunday address that marked the most important day on the Christian calendar.

The Roman Catholic Church leader presided over Mass in a packed and flower-bedecked St Peter’s Square and then delivered his “Urbi et Orbi” (to the city and the world) blessing and message from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.

Francis, 87, renewed his call for a ceasefire on Sunday.

“I appeal once again that access to humanitarian aid is ensured to Gaza, and call once more for the prompt release of the hostages seized on last October 7 and for an immediate ceasefire in the Strip,” he said in his Urbi et Orbi address.

‘’How much suffering we see in the eyes of children, the children have forgotten to smile in those war zones. With their eyes, children ask us: Why? Why all this death? Why all this destruction? War is always an absurdity and a defeat”, he added.

Francis condemned human trafficking and prayed for “a path of hope” for those suffering from violence, hunger and the effects of climate change, as well as consolation for “the victims of terrorism in all its forms”.

01/04/2024

After nearly a week of growing public discontent, the Togolese presidency announced that the controversial constitutional reform bill will be tabled again in Parliament.

On a statement unveiled on March 29, the office of President Faure Gnassingbé invokes the “interest aroused” by the adoption of the bill and the “perfectible nature of the law” to justify the request for a “second reading”.
The legislation, initially passed by parliament on March 25, has faced criticism from opposition parties who view it as a ploy to consolidate Gnassingbe’s domination over the structure of power in Togo.
Gnassingbé has ruled the country since 2005. Before that, he’s father was in charge.
The proposed constitution grants parliament the power to choose the president, doing away with direct elections. This makes it likely that Gnassingbé would be re-elected when his mandate expires in 2025.
Instead of a renewable 5-year term, the proposed bill restricts the power of future presidents and introduces a one-term limit. Instead, it hands over greater power to a figure similar to a prime minister, officially called the president of the council of minister. But opposition fears the role could become another avenue for Gnassingbé to extend his grip on power.
Postponing not annulling
Activists and opposition leaders in Togo called on Wednesday (Mar. 27) for protests to stop the country’s president from signing off on a new constitution

Residents of Kebbi State attacked a government warehouse in the Bayan Kara area of Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, on Saturday night, looting food items.

The looters also broke into some private facilities, overpowering the security forces on guard and making off with essential food items.

The latest incident in Kebbi State follows a similar event that happened earlier in Abuja and Suleja, Niger State. This looting spree could be attributed to challenging economic conditions stemming from the removal of petrol subsidies and the floating of the naira.

Russia has charged four men it says attacked a Moscow concert hall and killed at least 137 people.

Three were marched bent double into a Moscow court while the fourth was in a wheelchair.

All were charged with committing an act of terrorism.
The Islamic State group, or IS, said it carried out Friday’s outrage at Crocus City Hall, and posted video evidence.

Russian officials have claimed, without evidence, Ukrainian involvement. Kyiv says the claim is “absurd”.

All appear to have been beaten - videos of brutal interrogation sessions were apparently leaked by Russian security forces, and reports suggest at least one had suffered electric shocks.
The men the court identified as Mirzoyev and Rachabalizoda had black eyes and the latter’s ear was heavily bandaged - reportedly from it being partially severed during his arrest.

25/03/2024

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Sunday reiterated calls for an immediate cease-fire in war-torn Gaza and to allow humanitarian aid to reach the starving population in the coastal enclave.
“Looking at Gaza, it almost appears that the four horsemen of war, famine, conquest and death are galloping across it. That is why the time for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire is now,” he told a joint news conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry in Cairo, following talks.
He said Palestinians in Gaza need “a flood of aid,” calling for opening border crossings and allowing aid trucks waiting on the Egyptian side of Rafah crossing to enter Gaza.

The U.N. chief visited the Rafah crossing on Saturday and saw the aid trucks waiting.
The war began when Hamas-led militants stormed over the border on Oct. 7 and rampaged across southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking scores of people hostage.
Hamas is still holding an estimated 100 hostages and the remains of 30 others, after most of the rest were freed in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners in November.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) says human traffickers have devised another means to lure Nigerians out of the country with fake jobs in Ghana, Ivory Coast, and other countries in West Africa.

The Director-General of NAPTIP, Prof Fatima Waziri-Azi, revealed this at the Agency’s Headquarters in Abuja while discussing emerging trends in human trafficking for the year 2024.

According to her, the victims are trafficked through the waterways of Ode Jetty in Lagos en route to Benin Republic and other parts of the West African region. She also stated that some victims are also trafficked through the land routes.

“NAPTIP has uncovered a new ploy by some suspected human traffickers who are exploiting coordinated global brand trademarks and offering unrealistic Oil and Gas job offers to traffic unsuspecting youths and other classes of people to neighbouring West African countries for various forms of exploitation.
In recent times, NAPTIP has redoubled its efforts through enhanced partnership, collaboration, diligent prosecution, and extensive awareness campaigns aimed at bolstering its operations, resulting in a significant increase in convictions of human traffickers.
As part of our comprehensive enlightenment strategies to equip Nigerians with timely and accurate information to reduce their vulnerability, we have received reports indicating that traffickers have adopted new tactics to lure unsuspecting victims, predominantly to Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, and other West African nations.”

Russia has filed at least 15 criminal cases after people poured dye in ballot boxes, started fires and lobbed Molotov cocktails during the presidential vote this weekend.

Several incidents were reported across Russia on Saturday, including a resident of Ivanovo who set fire to a ballot box at a polling station, according to the regional department.

In Yekaterinburg, a man has been detained for 15 days for hooliganism for attempting to pour paint into a ballot box, Russian state media RIA Novosti reported.

This follows similar incidents caught on camera on the opening day of the three-day vote, near certain to extend Vladimir Putin’s long grip on power.

Niger Republic’s military government announced that it has ended an agreement with the US that allowed military personnel and civilian staff from the Department of Defense to operate in Niger, days after holding high-level talks with US diplomatic and military officials this week.

“The government of Niger, taking into account the aspirations and interests of its people, decides with full responsibility to denounce with immediate effect the agreement relating to the status of military personnel of the United States and civilian employees of the American Department of Defense in the territory of the Republic of Niger,” Niger military spokesman Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane said in a statement on national television announcing the change.

Abdramane added that the agreement between the two countries signed in 2012, was imposed on Niger and had been in violation of the “constitutional and democratic rules” of Niger’s sovereignty.

“This agreement is not only profoundly unfair in its substance but it also does not meet the aspirations and interests of the Nigerien people,” he said.

Niger was once a key regional partner for the US, but relations have deteriorated since the military junta claimed power in July 2023 in what the US formally designated as a coup.

Since then, the US has withdrawn most of its 1,100 troops who were stationed in Niger

Agony of corporate and individual internet users in Nigeria which has lasted since Thursday is not about to end soon as the latest reports indicate the service disruption may last for a further five weeks.

One of the undersea cable companies affected by the service disruptions, MainOne, said in a statement on Friday evening that the situation might persist for two to three weeks for the problem to be fixed.

It explained that investigations revealed that the fault came from an external incident that resulted in a cut on the submarine cable system in the ocean.

The United States says it has airlifted non-essential embassy staff from Haiti, as the country spirals further into gang violence.
The Americans have also boosted security at their mission in the capital, Port-au-Prince.

It follows attacks by gangs on the airport, police stations and prisons this week. They are pushing for Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s removal.

A three-day state of emergency has been extended by a month.
“Heightened gang violence in the neighbourhood near US embassy compounds and near the airport led to the State Department’s decision to arrange for the departure of additional embassy personnel,” the embassy posted on social media.

It added that the embassy will remain open.

The pre-dawn operation appeared to be conducted by helicopter, the AFP news agency reports, citing nearby residents who described hearing the sounds of aircraft blades overhead.

On Sunday, Germany’s ambassador to Haiti also left, travelling to the Dominican Republic, along with other EU representatives, the German foreign ministry told AFP. 🇭🇹 #

Health workers seeking jobs abroad have been directed by Nigerian Gov to resign before leaving the country.

Minister of State for Health, Tunji Alausa, who announced the executive order during a visit to the Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun state, on Saturday, March 9, said the era of health workers exiting the country after applying for a leave of absence is no longer acceptable.

The Minister also said they are training more health workers to address the shortage of personnel in the sector.

Alausa said;

“You cannot eat your cake and have it. If you are going, just resign your appointment with the Federal Government rather than applying for a leave of absence. That is the presidential executive order that has been communicated to all the Chief Medical Directors of Federal Government-owned health facilities to implement.
“The problem with the leave of absence is that such a fellow is out there in the UK or Australia working, making money but his name still appears on the payment roll of the government and so to replace him is difficult because he is still being considered as a staff whereas he has left the country.

“So, to solve this problem, the President has directed that health workers going abroad to work should just resign their appointments and not apply for leave of absence. This way, you won’t be blocking others who want to work and of course piling burdens for your colleagues that you left behind.
“The government is not unmindful of the ‘Japa’ effect on our manpower in the health sector and the President has ordered for massive production of manpower such that when people go, there will always be replacement.
“It is against this background that we are working intensely on the enrolment of our nurses. What used to be 28,000 is now 68,000, and our intention is to take it to 120,000 by the end of the year, so there will always be abundant skilled manpower to take over from those leaving the job.”

US film and TV giant Tyler Perry says he’s putting a $800m (£630m) expansion of his studio on hold after becoming concerned over new AI technology.
He was due to add 12 sound stages to his Atlanta complex, but says he has been put off by the release of OpenAI’s video generator Sora.
Perry, 54, believes “a lot of jobs” will be lost in the film industry because of artificial intelligence.
He told the Hollywood Reporter that Sora had “shocking” capabilities.

All of that [work] is currently and indefinitely on hold because of Sora and what I’m seeing,” he said.
“I had gotten word over the last year or so that this was coming, but I had no idea until I saw recently the demonstrations of what it’s able to do. It’s shocking to me.”
The tool, which has been made by the company behind ChatGPT, was launched in a limited way earlier this month and is not yet open to public consumption.

OpenAI’s CEO took requests from followers on X, formerly known as Twitter, and produced videos with their suggestions to show its capabilities.
With access to a few resources and a couple of text prompts, it was able to produce lifelike footage up to one minute long.
‘Very, very concerned’
Perry said the technology could make travelling to locations and building sets redundant: “I can sit in an office and do this with a computer, which is shocking to me,” he said.
