6 Cultural Practices That Need To Be Abolished In Ghana

Ghana is known to be very rich in culture because of the divers ethnic communities, with over 1000 languages found across the country. Because of the abundance of ethnic communities, lots of cultural practices are found in these communities. Some are good while others do not help national development.
In this article, I will highlight 8 cultural practices that I believe are a hindrance to national development and hinder progress in the country.

1. Cultural practices that expose sensitive parts of womanhood
In Ghana, there are some puberty cultural practices that tend to expose the sensitive parts of females to the community. The reason behind these practices in times past were to announce to the whole community that the girls undergoing such rites are of age and ready for marriage and so males who are interested can proceed to approach their parents.
But in my opinion, these cultural practices have outlived their purposes. Many communities in Ghana need creative ways of promoting women empowerment to support the survival of families. This practice can also demoralize girls with low self esteem, which can hinder their psychological growth, especially when no suitor comes to see their parents.

2. Harmful body alterations
The most common one in Ghana is the tribal mark which is mostly practiced in the northern parts of Ghana. It is done by cutting a part of the cheeks of individuals and applying some herbs. The purpose of this practice is to identify individuals more easily.
This cultural practice has also outlived its purpose. There are more advanced ways of identifying people, even just by name-giving. And now, we have our national identification system working effectively.

3. Imprisonment of individuals perceived to be witches in witch camps

This practice is not even supposed to be practice anywhere in the world. It is cruel and has no relevance in society. Recently, about three elderly people lost their lives as a result of being labeled witches. Most are abandoned in witch camps, with inhumane living conditions. This practice is denying children of their mothers and society of human labor-force.

4. Child Marriage

This is another practice which in my opinion is conceived out of selfish ambitions to display wealth. This has denied most young ladies their bright futures. They could have become useful people individuals to the society in the future. But have been married off to wealthy suitors, just for procreation.

5. Extortion through dowry and bride prices.

If you look at it carefully, dowry and bride prices are another form of extortion. In some instances, some families use the opportunity to create extensive lists amounting several thousands of cedis. This means that as a young man, if you are not financially stable, you cannot marry the one you want. This forces people to go for options that do not match their desires. This can lead to broken homes and other societal disadvantages.
