The Royal Gold Coast Gazette was the earliest known newspaper published in what is now Ghana. It was produced during the British colonial period and primarily served colonial administrators, merchants, and officials.
The Gazette focused on:
• Government notices and proclamations
• Trade and shipping information
• Colonial policy updates
While it was not designed for the general African population, its publication marks the beginning of formal print journalism in Ghana.
Today, Ghana has one of the most active media landscapes in Africa, spanning newspapers, radio, television, digital platforms, and creator-led media.
This highlights the starting point of that evolution.
