World Radio Day 2021
Today is World Radio Day! The theme is, 'New World, New Radio' and is an opportunity to examine the evolution of radio, innovation in radio and the power of radio to connect people.
In terms of our own evolution, Two Rivers Radio has come a long way in the last few years. Initially, circa 2015/16 there was just an idea - to build a radio station for the city of York that would focus on the city itself and that is completely participatory.
In 2017 we conducted our first ever broadcast with a brand new and small, skeleton team of 5 from Staxtonbury Music Festival. Huge thanks go to Declan Minskip, Steve Judge, Maja Morawska, Graham Blueskies and Jez Russell for making that weekend happen.
Later in the same year Two Rivers Radio began broadcasting every week from a pop-up studio at the The corner pin with a team of 40 volunteers from all walks of life.
Although we were only broadcasting for 10 hours a week on a Monday, the content was fantastic and covered topics as diverse as social & environmental justice issues, health & wellbeing, wrestling, local interest and history, politics and current affairs as well as a broad range of music from both liive bands and DJs.
You can enjoy many of our programmes from this period in the #TRRarchive: https://www.mixcloud.com/TwoRiversRadio_York/
All in all, during our time at the pin we broadcast over 600 hours of unique, grass-roots community radio made by the people of York, for the people of York in the heart of York. Further to these regular broadcasts we also covered a number of special events including Dunnington Community Events, Dyls Party in the Park and charity events for Macmillan Cancer Support and IDAS (Independent Domestic Abuse Services).
We took a break in April 2019 and had planned to relaunch in 2020 in a new café. Clearly, last year being the year it was that plan got shelved.
It has been our privilege to work with some amazing people and groups throuhout the city including, United Response, Yor
