It is the Pink Floyd album that marks the group's transition to a more elaborate sound, before settling on the one we all know and which made albums such as "The Dark Side of The Moon" and "Wish You Were Here" famous . Published in the United States on October 31st and November 5th in England 52 years ago, "Meddle" was born after the challenging experience with Michelangelo Antonioni and collects some famous pieces by the group of Gilmour and his associates, including the long suite " Echoes", the instrumental "One of these days" which sees Gilmour and Waters dueling on bass, with a great Mason unleashed on drums, and finally "Fearless", signed by Rogers Waters, who will begin to take care of the group's lyrics more assiduously and which sees the inclusion of the very famous Liverpool fans' chant "You'll Never Walk Alone". "Meddle", almost a sort of warm-up for the famous works of the following years, can be considered without a shadow of a doubt, a fundamental album for the evolution of the style of the four Pink Floyd.

Also on July 6: On this day in 1957, Paul McCartney was introduced to John Lennon.

[Painting, "The Introduction," by Eric Cash]

It happened at St. Peter’s Church in Woolton, during the summer garden fete. The catalyst was mutual friend, Ivan Vaughan - a sometime member of The Quarry Men, who got the notion in his head that his two musical friends, 16 year-old John and just-turned 15 Paul would get on well. while maintaining reservations as to whether Paul qualified as a “great” fellow - the kind he normally would introduce to John. (He’s seen here with Paul and a young George Harrison: https://tinyurl.com/2j7l6xtc)

The meeting took place in the church hall, sometime before the 8pm start time of the group’s second set. (The first had taken place on a stage outside; this was where Paul first heard and saw John, that day at least.) It remains unclear whether Paul had rode his bike home to retrieve his guitar before meeting John, or whether he had it all along; it’s an open question whether or not the left hander would have been able to impress on the opposite-stringed instrument John was playing, though not impossible.

But wow them he did, with run throughs of Eddie Cochran’s “Twenty Flight Rock,” Gene Vincent’s “Be Bop A-Lula,” and - to top it off - some Little Richard, his show-stopper. He also took the trouble to show them how to tune a guitar properly, a skill that had eluded John and the others thus far. The meeting stirred mixed feelings in John as to what decision to make: potentially undermine his own dominance or advance his musical career. In this instance, he made the right call.

For a band of nobodies for the first half-decade following their union, the boys that became the Beatles were remarkably well documented. Though no photos of the two were taken together on this day, photos of the band were, as well as an audio recording of their second set. It only surfaced in the 1990s, when the son of the youth who had taped it discovered it in his family’s attic. Here’s the publicly available snippet: the entire tape was bought at auction by EMI in 1994.

Also on June 6: On this day in 1968, the Beatles were interviewed by Kenny Everett in the studio.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_rVzAIhHGs

The group’s connections to the then-23 year old former pirate radio broadcaster were substantial: having landed at the BBC (which he promptly dubbed “the Beeb”) in 1967, it was Everett who previewed (most of) the Sgt. Pepper album in England on May 20, interspersing tracks with soundbites from each Beatle he’d taped the night before at the Pepper launch party hosted by Brian Epstein.

Later, he would be entrusted with stitching together separately-recorded segments for the 1968 and 1969 Beatles Christmas messages, giving an illusion of unity where none existed. But in between lay this in-studio visit, taped in EMI Studio 3 as the White Album sessions were getting underway. Dominated (naturally) by Lennon, he was joined by Paul (who trots out his Tiny Tim impression) and Ringo; George, only briefly.

Kenny’s broadcast history heretofore was known for madcap comedic characters and sound manipulation (playing with tape speeds). The Beatles therefore being on his wavelength, it was a very comfortable match. What ensued was an interview unlike any other they gave: all pretense of being serious was jettisoned early on, resulting in priceless captures of a succession of “goodbye jingles,” a jazz take of “Strawberry Fields,” and John’s piss-take of Lead Belly’s “Cottonfields.” (Also, John gives a shout out to future pal, Harry Nilsson.)

As noted, Everett caught them early on in their work: “Revolution 1” had been tracked (but not completed), as had Ringo’s “Don’t Pass Me By.” Worth noting is the news of the day: Senator and presidential candidate Robert Kennedy’s death after being critically wounded in the early morning hours of June 5 had been announced, though it is not known if the Beatles had heard this yet.

Here’s a transcript of the proceedings:
http://www.beatlesinterviews.org/db1968.0605.beatles.html

Edited down to a listenable length, the Everett interview was pressed onto both sides (part 1 and part 2) of a 7” single and issued in November as part of an Apple launch promo package in Italy, bundled with releases by Mary Hopkin, Jackie Lomax and The Iveys.
