Successful local business Luxury Coastal is is hoping to triumph at this year’s British Travel Awards. In 2022, Luxury Coastal scooped silver – not bad for a company that is just four years’ old – and hopes that this year voters will get behind the independent holiday lettings company and bump them into the top spot. Fisherman’s Friends The Musical
Princess Theatre - Thursday/Fri/Sat + Matineee

You heard the shanties, saw the surprise smash film in 2019, now get down to the Princess Theatre and love the stage version of Fisherman’s Friends!
I don’t know the reason why but we all seem to have space in our hearts for songs of old in the current climate and this musical keeps them coming by the boat load. ‘John Kanaka’, ‘No Hopers, Jokers & Rogues’, and ‘South Australia’, big numbers from the movie (and the original album) are belted out load and proud by the capable cast of singers and musicians. The acapella performances and harmonies were rich and deep but we loved the fact the musicians were fully part of the cast whether accompanying a particular shanty or not.
There are some stand out voices, the gruff band leader Jim (James Gaddas), Alwyn - Jim’s daughter (Parisa Shahmir) and Sally - landlady of the Golden Lion Inn (Hazel Monaghan) who gave a most haunting solo performance that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Alwyn’s rendition of ‘The Tidal Pool’ , written by Parisa herself was another stunning moment.
The stage adaptation follows the film quite closely so fans won’t be disappointed. The direction (from James Grieve) expertly sees the characters instantly come alive with a great mix of comedy and emotion that intertwines throughout the main plot - getting the band signed and the sub plot - the love story of Danny the London A&R man and Alwyn the local lass dealing with her mother desertion whilst also having her own musical talent to follow.
Issues of family, friendship and community are always close to the surface and are what draws us into this hearty tale.
The stage set was fantastic and moved cleverly from rustic inn to stormy seas aboard a trawler without blackout or drapes and at one point even to glitter ball and feather boas in Old Compton Street, Soho.If you loved the film you’ll love the live show more and even if your just a little partial to a sea shanty or two jump at the chance to see this great touring show!

The fabulous Cher Show has opened at the Princess Theatre, Torquay. A glittering, glamorous journey through time, this vibrant show brings back my personal memories of Sonny and Cher appearing on the news in 1965 with their wonderful song ‘I Got You Babe’ and their unique hippy-style appearance. The Cher Show takes us on a voyage of nostalgia through Cher’s life and her trials, tribulations and astonishing successes, all punctuated by many of her most iconic songs. My favourite is Bang Bang (My Baby Shot me Down) and the hits just keep coming with three superb Cher stars bringing back the memories and stunning sounds of different phases of her life. We hear Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves, If I Could Turn Back Time, Strong Enough, Believe (In Life After Love) and many more. The show really captures the highs and lows of Cher’s meteoric career trajectory, her managers, her husbands, Sonny (again) and her mother Georgia Holt (always). The action is non-stop, the costumes spectacular and the choreography fun and frenetic. The story leads Cher from a shy and naïve young girl of 16 to her position as a global superstar with plenty of bumps in the road. The writer is Rick Elice (Jersey Boys), the Director Arlene Phillips and the Choreographer Oti Mabuse both well known from Strictly Come Dancing. The Cher Show is on at Princess Theatre, Torquay through Saturday 18 February. Don't miss it! https://www.atgtickets.com/shows/the-cher-show/princess-theatre-torquay/

Saturday Night Fever opened last night at Torquay’s Princess Theatre with a hustle, a bump and a whole load of disco fingers!

The show, a homage to the 1977 film, follows young Italian-American Tony Manero (ably played by Jack Wilcox) as he embarks on a dance journey to win the 2001 Odyssey Club’s dance competition along with partner Stephanie Mangano (Rebekah Bryant). Although the plot follows the film fairly closely the dance competition features couples routines rather than John Travolta’s solo routine from the film. It’s no less exciting for it though as the couple dance exquisitely together along with their supporting cast members.

Tony’s journey is set against a background of family angst and personal tragedy in the mean streets of Brooklyn, New York. His dance ambition is cowered by his unemployed father in favour of his day job in. a paint store whilst his elder brother, a priest, encourages him to follow his dreams to make it a dancer.

Music was from a live band who were located within the set along with a fantastic vocal trio - AJ Jenks, Drew Ferry and Oliver Thomson, who as well as being great lookalikes for the Bee Gees were vocally spot on – could there be any bigger challenge for an actor? We were foot-tapping and bum-jiving in our seats from the first number!

Jack Wilcox’s charisma and gyrating hips coupled with Rebekah Bryant’s oh so sleek moves and great singing voice elicited a constant stream of oohs and aahs from the audience. The two stars are supported by a great cast with a stand out performance from Harry Goodson-Bevan who plays the tragic Bobby C .

We really loved the big numbers – Night Fever and Disco Inferno, when an array of glitter balls were switched on and the entire auditorium was transformed into a 70s disco!

The finale crescendo was a dance spectacular and had the entire audience on their feet for along ovation well deserved!

With tickets from as little as £13 you might just as well turn the heating off, walk away from the bad news on TV and treat yourself to a glorious evening of nostalgia (in a lovely warm theatre)!

As per the film, the show does focus on some mature themes and contains some ‘colourful’ dialogue.
