Good Life deliverer Helen Regan wants to thank the couple who found her purse in Alexandra Rec in Surbiton and returned it to her bank.

“I was in a mad panic, looking for it everywhere, but it was nowhere to be found at home or back at the park,” said Helen who was on the Elizabeth Line when she had a phone call to say her purse had been found. “I am grateful that the new Elizabeth line has a phone signal and that my bank still has a branch in Surbiton!”

“The couple didn’t leave a name and I would like to see if we can find them to thank them,” said Helen.

“What I would say to people is if you have ever wanted to give it a go, come along because I can guarantee you are going to love it.”

Huge congratulations to Lola Anderson and her teammates who have just won gold medals at the Women's Quadruple Sculls in the Paris Olympics.

Lola, pictured, a former Surbiton High School pupil, and fellow rowers Lauren Henry, Hannah Scott and Georgie Brayshaw, pipped the Netherlands on the line in a nail-biting photo finish.

"It doesn't get bigger than this," said an emotional Lola, shedding tears of joy before the awards ceremony. "It is really quite overwhelming to just experience this, but we're really grateful."

The winning medals were presented to the team by the Princess Royal. Princess Anne is herself an Olympian.

It's the first time in Olympic history that a GB women’s team have won the quadruple sculls.

4ft or over? You’d almost have to be a limbo dancer to negotiate the foliage of this Victoria Rec lime tree, overhanging the pavement in Balaclava Road, Surbiton - and there is more limboing to do as you make your way down the road.

Perhaps they could introduce it as a new Olympic sport?

24/07/2024

British blues pioneer John Mayall, a regular at Tolworth’s Toby Jug pub in the 60s and 70s, has died at his California home at the age of 90.
With his ever-changing band The Bluesbreakers, whose personnel included Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Peter Green and Mick Taylor, he was one of the most popular acts at the pub which used to stand opposite Tolworth Tower on the A3.
He was a primary source for the book Hello Tolworth, I’m Ziggy, about the remarkable parade of groups who played in the Toby’s side room.
The world of music lost a remarkable archive when recordings and memorabilia of every single gig Mayall played were lost in a bush fire. Now a remarkable musician has been lost too.
Mayall first played in Tolworth on March 27 1968, with Keef Hartley on drums... arriving in this battered old Comma van! He returned on May 22 that year. “We often did eight shows a week in different venues,” he told me when I was researching the book.
A few signed copies of the numbered, limited-edition book still available at: https://thegoodlifesurbiton.co.uk/toby-jug/

The husband of an 80-year-old Tolworth woman is to appear in court today (Monday) charged with her murder.

Alan Sharp, 80, of Raeburn Avenue, will appear in custody at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court charged with the murder of his wife, Jenny Sharp, at the home they shared.

An investigation was launched after police were called at around 9.30am last Friday (July 19) to the Sharps’ home after a woman was found unresponsive. She was sadly pronounced dead at 9.32am.

Alan Sharp was arrested at the scene and an investigation was undertaken by detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, led by Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie.

Sharp was charged with murder the following day.

A forensic post-mortem examination took place and gave the cause of death as ‘manual compression of the neck’.

Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the case.

DCI Howie said: “This is a terribly sad case. The family are being supported by specialist officers and we request their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time.”

Wish them luck. These members of Surbiton Hockey Club, pictured, along with four other teammates, arrived in Paris yesterday (Thursday) to compete in the Olympic Games.

The group caught the Eurostar with other members of the GB squad, and are now settling in to the Olympic Village, preparing for their first matches (GB Men on Sat, July 27, and the GB Women on Sun, July 28) both against Spain.

Dave Goodfield, 31, the captain of Surbiton’s men’s 1st team, is making his debut at the games.

“I’m incredibly excited; I’m really proud of getting to this point, my first Olympic games," he said. "I’ve wanted to go ever since I first started to play hockey when I was around 10.”

Giselle Ansley, 32, has represented her country in Rio (winning gold) and Tokyo (winning bronze) and is making her third, and final, appearance.

She said: “I would never be where I am now if it wasn’t for the support of this club and the opportunity to train and play here in the ladies first team.”

Pictured left to right: Conor Williamson, Nick Park, Giselle Ansley, Dave Goodfield, Izzy Petter, Gareth Furlong, Tim Nurse.

Also from Surbiton in the GB team are Hannah French, Sophie Hamilton, Amy Costello and James Mazarelo.

Have a connection to the Armed Forces or even just an interest in them?

Then the launch of a new, local group discussing education, jobs, careers and support with much more, will be of interest to you.

The Kingston Armed Forces Support Group is being set up to benefit those with a military background – and those associated with them.

It is being launched by Kingston University at its Kingston Hill campus this coming Monday (June 24) at 4pm with guest speaker Dr Richard Boffey talking about the academic options for military families in higher education, and a talk on the life of a military spouse by Baroness Sue Garden.

“The group is being set up to provide a connection and support system so we can share experiences and ideas and provide information on how best to offer relevant support to those from a military background: staff, students, and those who would like to consider joining us,” said the university’s Prof Alison Baverstock.

To book your free place at the launch, which coincides with the start of Armed Forces Week, visit Eventbrite.co.uk and search for Kingston University.

Arts for hearts. There’s a new defibrillator in town and it’s outside the cornerHOUSE in Douglas Road, Surbiton.

The equipment, which could help save a life by giving a high-energy shock to the heart of someone in cardiac arrest, is on the wall by the bar door at the community arts centre in Douglas Road.

It was funded by donations from the cornerHOUSE, the Surbiton Rotary Club and the defibrillator charity London Hearts.

“The cornerHOUSE is really pleased to be able to have this asset available for the community,” said trustee Ian Davies, pictured.

You can find out the location of other defibrillators in the area by visiting the website defibfinder.uk

The arts centre is run by volunteers and it is looking for more helpers to staff its bar, box office and front of house to cover its shows and events. Might you be able to give up some of your free time to help? Email Su Collins at [email protected] to find out more.

They're up! Crocheted and knitted toppers now adorn the wall at Surbiton’s Royal British Legion.

It's an amazing spectacle with twelve toppers including a gunboat, submarine, landing craft, Pegasus bridge, Horsa glider, jeep, motorbike, tank, soldier, and even Winston Churchill, gracing the pillars outside the Legion's social club in Hollyfield Road. Some of them are pictured here.

There’s even a knitted parachutist (see pic of it being made) by Michelle Nichols.

They have been created over the past few months by members of the club’s Stitch and Natter group to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day and the Normandy landings.

Guides, brownies, scouts and cubs have also made bunting for between the posts and keyrings which will help raise money for the poppy appeal.

Crochet group leader Denise Corbett said: “We hope people will remember the sacrifices made on D-Day, and hopefully will stop and read the information under each topper and learn something about what happened on June 6 1944."

The Legion is running a number of events next week open to the public to mark the special anniversary of D-Day. Visit Surbiton Royal British Legion's page to find out more.
