“The ocean still shuffled in ambiguous directions like a heavy-footed dancer, the wind glided graciously over waves carrying a scent of salt, and red paint lusciously glistened on the white tower: a symbol of the islands.”

In ‘Keepers of the Light’ .turnerr visits Eastern Canada’s Magdalen Islands to interview descendants of the island's notorious lighthouse guardians. Discussing their iconic relationships with their community, they share their efforts to preserve Magdalen's history, and the fear of losing their cultural identity to an overbearing housing market.

‘Keepers of the Light’ is published in aetla 04, available to preorder now at aetla.co

Aetla 03 is still available on our website, both printed and digital. Before the pre-order launch of our upcoming issue, we'd like to briefly go into why we're so dedicated to bringing our dear readers more stories on nature and freedom, as the world feels ever more restrictive for many. And it shouldn’t be.

We feel that magazines like ours are more important than ever. As a species, we need to be reminded every day of the sheer diverse beauty and balance of our natural world. The gentle loveliness of a flowing river, or leaves dancing through the tree in a brisk wind. These wonders are connection - they show us that we are here and we are part of the natural world.

Pressures of everyday life force us to forget that we are simple creatures. Natural and wild and green.

Our magazine is a celebration of that reminder, a conversation to spark change and a creative way to contribute positively as changemakers. And we are so cherished with every order, as it means we can keep doing this. And for that, we thank you.

The power of stories is so important to humanity. It was the first invention. Before the wheel and even before fire, our ancestors shared stories. This is how they learned, adapted and survived. Stories are what gave us the creativity, knowledge and history to evolve, to remember and to become what we are today.

Stories are important. They can change our perspectives, and act in different ways. That's why it's vital to share stories on health and happiness, on why the natural world is a wonderful place - for hope that the suffering will end. Many stories are out there, meaning some will often be overlooked. But we will continue to share our stories with you to show that there are still as many opportunities to utter once upon a time...

Our stories have been about people and the land, the spiritual and the scientific. They’ve been, ultimately, about the realities of living. We’ve taken a slow and steady approach to finding the right stories that speak to the small moments as much as the big adventures.

In these years we’ve learned about the strength of our community, become friends with readers, framed covers on the wall and, most importantly, quietly shared how the beauty of the natural world includes the nuances of the human spirit through a collection of stories to soothe the soul.

We are modern humans in a wild world. And we’re so lucky to be here 💚

Now, we’re working on an event to celebrate these three years and our upcoming volume as we’ve never had the chance before! If you’re interested in finding out when and where first, sign up at aetla.substack.com

Did you know that it’s our 3rd anniversary?!

That’s three years since I first posted on Instagram that a new magazine was coming - a magazine that’s now nearly seven (and a half if you count ‘notes from’) issues in. It was a whirlwind in those early days, building conversations, understanding who our audience was going to be, and figuring out production logistics for a smaller publication than I was used to making. Writing more stories than I had planned to…

These volumes have been created through a pandemic, a marriage breakdown, job losses, major family tragedies, and a move to a (not) big city. Not ideal, but not enough to stop something we all believe in either.

Because they’ve also been crafted through the incredible dedication and support of team members past and present, contributors, family and friends.

They are a lullaby to the outdoors, both as we are in it, and it is carried in us.

** COVER REVEAL **
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Remember when we said we’re going back to quarterly publishing?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s so exciting to already be showing you our cover for Aetla 04, which is taken from the feature, ‘Wet Earth’ by Emily Spivey. It leads a collection of stories that are tied to endings, beginnings and tradition - tales that in a number of ways, link back to the water, the tidelines and the edges of who we are, were and will be.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Publishing in December, we’re so excited to have worked with such talented modern humans again to share their wonderful, natural stories with all of you. In many ways, this feels the most aetlary of aetlas so far.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Like Aetla 03, our latest magazine will only be £6. We’ve worked hard to make sure our magazine is as accessible as possible. We believe sustainability starts at home and understand that times have become hard for many. But please continue to support us where you can, and the talented writers we work with.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Pre-orders will open at aetla.co/shop from the 14th November
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thank you 🖤

‘I am hungry for the cold. For the slow, relentless pull towards the extreme, each swim another layer stripped back. Each degree given away to the air feels like a hard limit.’

Cold water swimmer, Leilia Dore, challenged herself to 52 swims during 2021, quickly surpassing that to aim for 100. Now a committed wild swimmer, she shares the seasonal changes to UK waters and what that means for her journey in ‘Swimming into Autumn’ - available to read now at www.aetla.co (link in bio)

With the need for natural regeneration, Ralu Miclea’s essay on rewilding the human self is a deep reflection on what can happen for progress if we centre ourselves in the here or now of the great outdoors.

"As I walk along a beach, the waves curling around my ankles, I breathe oxygen created by life under the sea. As I walk along the cliffs of southwest England, I stand on a shoreline protected from erosion by life under the sea. As I swim, cold saltwater slipping over me like silk, I am immersed in an environment without which life would not exist."

Rosie Sherwood, takes us on a journey through her immersive photographic exhibition designed to raise awareness of the incredible climate-positive action of this ocean plant.

We’re less than 15 minutes away from knowing who the next British Prime Minister will be. While every major news platform is particularly certain who will move into No.10, they’re all asking one question: what will they do to tackle the cost of living crisis?

And while there are a myriad of proposed solutions that may suffice as quick fixes and temporary reprieves, there’s only one clear answer:

The current system is not sustainable - it’s time to change.

Because there’s been enough platitudes, empty promises and sound bites. Sustainability, after all, values people, planet - and profit.

We at Aetla believe exploration and travel are an important part of being a modern human and understanding the planet we call home. However, we also feel that this could perhaps become a detriment to the world we're wishing to explore. Is eco-tourism as environmentally and culturally friendly as once believed?
