We are delighted to announce that the second of two winners for the 2023 Emerging Voices Film Fund is Hansel Rodrigues.
rodrigues short film is called ‘An Indirect Message’, a comedy about a man’s struggle with his sexually thunderous housemate who lives above him. After trying but failing to confront the situation due to his fear of confrontation and his disarmingly sweet housemate, he fantasises about several outcomes eventually deciding there is only one way to let her know…to make a short film and hope she watches it.

Hansel won us over with an original (and hilarious) script, brilliant character development and a strong structure. We can’t wait to see what Hansel creates!

We are delighted to announce that the first of two winners for the 2023 Emerging Voices Film Fund is Naomi Abel-Hirsch.

short film is a documentary called ‘Rose’s House’. During the late 1970s and 80s, Rose’s House, a nondescript terrace home in Sheffield, provided a safe space for a marginalised community of trans women to express themselves and find refuge from the hostilities they experienced in the wider world. The film will tell the story of the life of this community of gender-nonconforming women’s resilience and joy in a time of fear and persecution.

Naomi provided a wonderful treatment and short POC edited on her phone. We are thrilled to support Naomi and the brilliant concept for her first short film.

Working with start-ups is fascinating, because you learn so much about a subject from being immersed in their business and building a distillery from the ground up is no small feat. Once a Scientist and Architect, Abbie and Chris are now the founders of England's most exciting new Distillery, carving a path for hand-crafted premium whisky. It’s been amazing to watch Cooper King Distillery grow from strength to strength, especially with the perspective of running my own company for a similar amount of time, and as a founding member it’s also been lovely to receive the first bottles of maturing malt and new-make malt. This film was also back in the day when it was just me (@matthewlaweswickwar), and whilst filming with larger crews is excellent and where I am most comfortable, I have fond memories of doing it all myself. We are just £500 shy of our £2,000 goal for the Other Brother Studios Film Fund. Seeking new partners for additional sponsorship: are you interested? Set up in 2017 the fund aims to support emerging filmmakers in the early stages of their careers. We have supported 4x talented emerging filmmakers since 2017 and as we head into the 5th year of the fund we want to make even more of a difference and raise the support given. Winning shorts have been shown at 54 film festivals internationally, including ‘7 Planets’ by Milda Baginskaite, the 2017 film fund winner. From Milda: 'Being a young filmmaker, let alone being young, is not easy. There are lots of us out there, trying to get our films made and a lot of us have good ideas too, I believe. Film being a collaborative affair, we need more people than just ourselves believing in our stories to get them off the ground. Other Brother Studios, first of all, has given me so much confidence in the project, supporting and understanding the story I wanted to tell. From early preproduction until the late distribution stages of 7 Planets, Matthew has given us great advice and provided us with technical support whenever needed. At the same time, our team was given lots of freedom to make our own decisions and creative choices. The challenging budget limitations and a set timescale to produce the film have worked out for the better for us, as any kind of limitations make one think creatively and improvise. With a budget of £500 we managed to have over 20 schoolchildren and a rocket launch in our short.
