Here's a little secret: humans have a tendency to catastrophize!

Catastrophizing is a thought pattern that includes exaggerations of what we observe.  

We most clearly see this when we experience rejection. Someone who just experiences a breakup, for example, might think that this is the end of the world and there is no hope for future relationships. This is definitely an example of catastrophizing. 

The most effective way to combat catastrophizing is by grounding yourself objectively by making accurate conclusions about what occurred. The person experiencing the breakup can tell themselves that it is rarely the case that going separate ways leads to a lonely life in the end. It may even be the best thing that ever happened! 

Ask yourself today: in what ways do I catastrophize? What can I say to myself to remain objective about what happened?
